Most recently was a movie I saw a few weekends ago called Silent Running. It came out in 1971 and stars Bruce Dern. It's about these four guys up in space and they have these domes connected to their ship and these domes contain all that was left of earth. They had animals and crops, fruits, vegetables. Water, desert, forests etc. Bruce Dern is the guy taking care of all of these things. He eats the vegetables also instead of the other stuff the other guys eat. Something happens where they are given orders to disconnect the domes and blow them up in space. This would mean getting rid of everything that was once on earth. Bruce Dern's character doea what he can to save the domes. I have to stop here because I do not want to give away to much of the movie. He fights for what he loves and in the end of the movie there is hope that still lives on but it is depressing and ends on a sad note. There are three droid robots in this film and they are played by amputees which is rather interesting.

Requiem For A Dream - Need I say more?
Carrie - The smile fading from Carrie's face as the pig's blood was dumped on her just tore me up.
Stepmom - It was really touching what Jackie said to her kids at the end, about seeing them in their dreams after she died http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif
I'll agree with Jacob's Ladder getting me all down and out, as well as Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Damn, I love Giovanni Ribisi. I will add one I didn't see, The English Patient. Dude, when Ralph Fiennes is carrying Kristen Scott Thomas out of that cave, he's really MEANING that shit. Broke my heart.

It's not the top of my list but I was very depressed and dissapointed when Karen Sisco shot Jack Foley and sent him back to Glades in Out of Sight. I wanted to see him stay free.
The top of my list would have to go to American Beauty. Lester was finally feeling good about his life and that sonofabitch blew his brains out. The film cheers me up when he tells how happy he had become and everything but everytime I watch that scene (especially the 1st time and screaming out "What the fuck?") I get very depressed. It just shows how unexpectedly things can happen in life though.

Depressing movies (bummers):
Magnolia
Boys Don't Cry
Barfly
Looking for Mr. Goodbar
(??Ohh...I'm having a brain burp...what is that one about the school bus wreck...Heaven something?? Sweet something?? Anyway, a real bummer)
Then, movies that made me cry, no doubt, everytime I've seen them:
terms of endearment
Steel Magnolias (when Sally Fields is at the graveyard)
Love Story
The Way We Were
Runaway Bride (I was the only one crying because she didn't know which eggs she liked)
Dr. Zhivago
Legends of the Fall

Many films have sad endings, or are generally sad thoughout. But I have to say, Requiem for a Dream was VERY depressing. Great movie nonetheless.

I believe I don't see anywhere the movie:
Dead Man Walking (with Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Ermey(?, the sarge from Full Metal Jacket))
My God, this movie really is the most depressing one I've ever seen. As far as I know, only Leaving Las Vegas comes close to being the most depressing film ever made.

Requiem For A Dream
Green Mile, put me on the brink of tears, I was seriously welling up during that movie, but I didn't find it depressing.
It's just the really awful movies, the ones I can't stand that become the depressing ones in my opinion.

There are so many, but the most depressing for me is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The first film to ever move me and make me break out in tears. :(

Requiem For A Dream - had me crying like a bitch with a skinned knee
"I'm going to be on television..."
The Green Mile - Was watching this with a group of "tough guys" and at the end we were all crying like babies
Welcome To The Dollhouse - damn, I loved this movie and while it wasn't tear-inducing, it overall was depressing but also kept me laughing all the way through.
Succubus
06-30-2003, 05:43 PM
Boys Don't Cry - I watched this with some fairly hardened film-loving friends of mine, and we were left in total silence at the end.
La Haine - see above. Saw it for the first time in a Film Studies class, and the silence and atmosphere following that ending was palpable.
Schindler's List - it may have highlighted the power of the human spirit, but Schindler's breakdown (I'd be so bold as to say it is probably one of the best-acted scenes I've ever seen) always gets me going.
Dancer In The Dark - felt like I'd literally been kicked in the stomach. A totally, utterly, heartbreaking film.
Jude - a love story, so sensitively portrayed with such insight by Winslet and Ecclestone, who make their characters so human that their downfall is all the more tragic.
Requiem For A Dream - from the last half hour on, you feel as though your emotions have been ripped out of you - certainly the most harrowing, unrelenting film I have ever seen.

Most people here seem to define a depressing movie as a movie that made them cry. I don't agree. There are several movies that made me cry - but none of them made me feel depressed. A depressing movie is a movie that leaves a weight in my chest that doesn't shift for days. Two movies that fit this description are:
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
TAXI DRIVER

Like every one else i've got to say Requiem for a Dream, it's such a downer but a damn good movie.
I don't know about any one else but I also find Full Metal Jacket really sad. The fact that it was a real story (a book called "The Short Timers" by some Vietnam vet.) is also really depressing.
