Excellent, Excellent Werewolf Movie. It has the right blend of horror and comedy. The special effects are great. It is definitely worth a buy on DVD! I own the Collector's Edition and it is loaded with extras including Commentary w/ David Naughton & Griffin Dunne, John Landis Interview, Rick Baker talks about Special Effects, Making of AWIL Featurette, Outtakes, Photograph Montage, etc. Well worth it. :)

I gotta be honest, I really didn't like this movie. The transformation scenes were very well done and so were the stalk scenes, especially the one in downtown London, but the joking zombie ruined it for me. Still, it's better than a lot of movies out there. The Howling is my favorite werewolf movie.

Very good movie! One of the better werewolf flicks. The Howling stands at around no. 3 for me tho... no. 1 is probably Ginger Snaps, then AWIL. :)

Definitely one of my favs. Although I think WOLF just barely beats it out for me to the No. 1 spot.

Wonderful werewolf flick as many have said. It's so cool on the big screen, too.

Good, but I personally prefer The Howling to this one, if only by a minute amount. I don't remember much about Wolf, but I recall it being decent.

Good lord, buy it buy it buy it. My absolute favorite Werewolf movie. Get the version that has the bonus feature containing commentary. It's pretty funny.

Trivia: David Naughton used to be the Dr. Pepper guy dancing in the 80's commercials (I'm a Pepper, You're a Pepper, Wouldn't cha like to be a Pepper too?) and in the 70's had a hit disco song called "Makin' It."

Also, don't know if anyone other Schmoes have mentioned it, but Dog Soldiers is a GREAT Australian werewolf flick. Another fave of mine.

Yeah, Dog Soldiers is definitely worthwhile too - but it's English not Australian.

SPOILERS -

Does anybody know that GRIFFIN DUNNE (who played the one backpacker killed by the werewolf on the moors) is DOMINQUE DUNNE'S brother? She played the eldest daughter in POLTERGEIST, who was murdered by her boyfriend shortly after the film was released.

You guys probably knew this, but I only found out the other day!!!

P.S - the dude with the long hair in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS always reminded me of ANTHONY KIEDIS form THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS!! :p

Until I see Company of Wolves, this flick will remain my favorite werewolf film. Too bad the sequel was pretty crappy.

Don't feel bad, because I just found out about oh, 2 seconds ago when I read your post! That is some interesting - if tragic - trivia.

I'm not big on werewolf movies but this was pretty good, however the person who directed the sequel should be stabbed in the face. twice.

TWISTED SISTER -

Yeah I thought it was interesting trivia - obviously very sad too. But it's all to do with that whole 'curse' thing on the POLTERGEIST movies. Some old dude who either worked on POLTERGEIST 2 or starred in it apparantly died straight after filming. And then the star of the three movies, HEATHER O'ROURKE died suddenly after POLTERGEIST 3 was released.

Poltergeist curses aside, An American Werewolf in London is one of my favorite movies ever, not just in the horror genre.

I find it funny though, because I had never seen it until last year, where I was rummaging through the selection at Blockbuster, noticed it and decided to take it home...and needless to say, loved it.

Lucky for me, I work at a video store so I can rent it whenever I want for free! I'm still working on the whole 'buying it' thing...perhaps next paycheck I'll pick it up. I've seen it around but I've never actually convinced myself to buy it, which is very bizarre.

Oh well, excellent movie. I cringe everytime David turns into the werewolf. Very realistic (as far as realistic goes in a werewolf movie...) performance.

Best Werewolf flick out there. Not to mention the most effective werewolf in any horror flick.

Sigh, I am in the minority here. I didnt really enjoy it. The comedy was too hokey and it couldnt decide which direction to go. I didnt like the stand up comedian dead friend and didnt find the humor funny at all. The beginning was creepy as hell though, wish it would have stayed that way.

Why start a new thread when I can reopen one nearly a year old!!! Anyway where I live every summer they have Trash Film Orgy at the theater downtown. They play horror movies and do crazy shit. Anyway this last Saturday night they played AAWIL and the print was great! I decided to dress up here I am: http://trashfilmorgy.com/gallery/index.php?currDir=./2005/Show-3-An-American-Werewolf-in-London&pageType=image&image=DSCF0247.JPG
I love watching this movie in the summer and It still holds up even after 20 plus years.

CoW is amazing, and I mean AMAZING (10/10) but it's not a traditional werewolf movie (think: Suspiria, but some poeople turn into wolves from time to time). Don't expect anything like Howling or AWIL when seeing it.

Good movie, atmospheric, good FX, good music and of course good directing by Landis.

Can you believe this is the man behind The Blues Brothers ?

This was my favorite Werewolf film ever made until i saw DOG SOLDIERS, and now...its a near tie between the two.

Both kick supreme ass, but i may have to give this one the edge due to the AWESOME soundtrack.

Clearly the best werewolf movie IMHO. The scenes where his deceased pal brings back his victims to "talk" to him are absolutely surreal. An American Werewolf in London is certainly one of the best horror films of the '80s.

This, The Howling, Wolf, Silver bullet and Dog Soldiers are all awsome werewolf movies, but AWIL was the first (exept The Wolfman 1941) for me and it scarred the shit out of me in the early 80īs.
I met the actor (Michael Carter) that plays Gerald Bringsby (the victim in the subway) on a sci-fi convention (he also plays Bib Fortuna, Jabba the Hutts guard in Return of the Jedi)and let him sign my poster of AWIL. He was surprised that I remembered him from AWIL and happily signed my poster with the words "Donīt go down the subway alone at night /Gerald Bringsby

AWIL is a great classic from John Landis and I think it was the first horrormovie that won an OSCAR for its specialeffects and make-up...

Superb film. An American Werewolf in Paris, Dog Soldiers, Underworld, Underworld 2, Big Bad Wolf, and Darkwolf all left me unimpressed. An American Werewolf in London was the real deal though. Glad I decided to sit down and watch it. The humor worked for me. Especially that awful porno that they watch. Ha ha. I don't remember much of the sequel because I saw it nine years ago but it just can't hold a candle to the original! Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Yeah the porn is so bad. If you have the DVD with the blue cover. There is a blooper reel or something as an extra. One part shows a soundless interview with Landis. All of the sudden the wall behind him falls over and you see people making the porn that shows up in the movie. Its really funny when you watch it.

I highly recommend Ginger Snaps and The Howling. They are great werewolf movies. Darkwolf was that Kane Hodder movie right??

teenkiller

Yes it was. It didn't totally suck but it didn't do anything to win me over. Ginger Snaps and The Howling are both on my "search list" which, no matter how many movies I watch, only seems to get longer. The list is like the fucking Hydra or something. For every movie I watch two more grow in it's place. In due time...

Back to American Werewolf though. I really loved the ending. Not a happy one and very abrupt. It just ENDS. That's it.

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

In John Landis's MOH: Deer Woman, there is a nice reference/inside joke to AWIL. Its also one of the better MOH's because Landis adds that humor to it.

Yeah, I actually own Deer Woman and was the first time I was really surprised with Landis' use of horror and humor. I have owned Innocent Blood for years but never watched it. I got it as a buy one get one free deal. I'll have to dig it out and give it a look some time next year. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Yeah, Innocent Blood doesn't come close to the awesomeness of Werewolf but it does have a few nice bloody moments. Has been a while since I last saw it but I do remember it being rather funny at times.
