this is great news. I believe 9/11 needs as much exposure as possible, now it seems many others agree with me.

White Chicks had a strong enough friday openning, same can be said for The Notebook too.

Also, Dodgeball is showing a good hold. I'm not too surprised; i thought it looked crappy but positive word has got me wanting to see it.

This weekend is looking fairly different from recent ones. First, last weekend's movies have held pretty well. Looks like Dodgeball's drop will be about 45% or so, and The Terminal's might be only 35%. Then you've got three new releases all finding an audience, which makes sense since each one is chasing different viewers. Only Two Brothers really didn't catch on, but that's not surprising. And ouch Riddick: two weeks in the top 10. Damn.

What really makes Fahreinheit 9/11's opening jaw dropping is that it is only playing in 868 theaters.

It is jaw dropping. You're looking at a per screen average in the $25,000-$30,000 range at this point.

Wow, look at Fahrenheit go!

Told ya Terminal would hold well.

White Chicks broke out, no surprise.

Dodgeball held more than I gave it credit for.

Notebook did great business, as I called on it to.

Shrek keeps mowin' along.

Im not a fan of Moore, and I cant believe it made it to #1.

Manipulative Bastard.

First Mel Gibson, and now Michael Moore. They both succeeded in manipulating the media into huge box office.

NICE!!!

868 theatres according to Tom Samborski. However, a lot of places reported that there were actually less theatres showing it, as little as 750, etc though as the official number, 868 is correct.

More proof that when a film is controversial and in the news a lot, then it's bound to be a hit. After The Passion's jaw-dropping success, I knew that Fahrenheit 9/11 would do well, with all the media exposure the film and Mike Moore have had in the past few months. The Palme D'or didn't hurt the film at all either. Now I really want to see it...

Good hold for Terminal, I'm glad since it was a pretty decent film (7/10). Same with Dodgeball, I've been wanting to see that for a while now.

At this point, F911 is on pace to break the record for highest grossing documentary in just one weekend. It took current record-holder Bowling for Columbine 25 weeks to reach that point.

Yeah, I think disney chief michael eisner should resign over this, it's made it's budget back in one day, it will make shitloads of money, and that money could have gone to disney if he had stood up to dubya and Jeb. He has no balls.

It actually only took 6 weeks for BFC become the highest grossing documentary of all time.

But Fahrenheit is only going to do it in like 5 days.

Question: Has a documentary ever been #1 in the weekend box office before?

Nope. I don't even remember any previous charts finding a documentary on the Top 10 altogether except Super Size Me.

Sure, but I'm saying it took 25 weeks for BFC to reach the amount of money ($21 million) that F911 is likely going to reach by the end of the weekend.

If it was going to happen, you might imagine it occuring in the fall, during a slow movie season.

But in the SUMMER? In late JUNE? Egads.

Wow just goes to show you that some people are dumb enough to pay for Public Television. Luckily, I'm not one of them......

Some people consider THE ORIGINAL KINGS OF COMEDY to be a documentary, and it had a pretty strong opening (in about the same number of theaters as F9/11). I think it was an $11 million opening weekend, but I'm far too lazy to confirm any of it :)

Box office records for documentaries exclude large format films (Imax movies like Everest) and concert films, which is what Original Kings of Comedy is categorized as.

cstroman, I hope you are not saying that everyone who paid to see F9/11 is dumb. That would not be cool.

Indeed, Moore is a manipulative prick, but from a money making stand point it was completely idiotic for him to turn this movie down!

As long as it makes the $$$ he shoulda been smart enough to put what he had against Moore on the side in order to at least salvage his career!

...another nail in Disneys coffin.:o
