I can't do a simple vampire story, because people like Joss Whedon have capitalized on the simplicity behind the vampire mythos. (stakes, dust, etc)

And I can't use the concept that I've ALWAYS loved, which is a secret branch of the government who specializes in paranormal defense, because Guimeeoreoer Del Toro made fucking HELLBOY.

Sorry. Filmmaker's rant. I just hate coming up with a nice, simple idea, tell someone about it and they're all "Oh yeah that was in <insert movie here>. Man you just totally ripped that movie off. You need to be more original."

With all the simple stuff taken I usually have to resort to complexity or something totally off-the-wall. Not that I mind that at all, but every once in a while I would like to do something simple. Y'know?

Bite me, Hollywood.

I know what you mean, I primarily write non-insipid (I hope) romantic comedies, but most ideas have been taken.

But that just gives you a good reason to put your own spin on it. I appreciate the challenge, personally.

Dude, there are truly no original plots anymore
there are original executions of the same plots.

Which is why I don't have faith in the romantic comedy genre. they're all the same basically. no one say "eternal sunshine" because I find that more of a drama
