Oceans 11 set a record for being the biggest dec. release to open. But with releases like Lord of the Rings and Ali, i think this record might be taken 2 more times this month. what do you think?

With the box office figures the way they are, I have no idea anymore.. I mean, there've been FOUR $60+ million opening weekends this year so far... incredible. I think it's certainly possible with Ali, but I have no idea where Lord of the Rings will open... if all the hype will motivate non-fans to run see it opening weekend. I think LOTR could open with anywhere from $30 to $90 million.

Considering that a HIGH MAJORITY of reviews from both critics and "regular people" (the Schmoes!) have been extremely positive, I would say that this baby's got a good chance of going for the long run...

Top that off to the fact that VANILLA SKY has apparently been getting raped by many reviewers (which might explain the lack of screenings out there-- I didn't get one), and I would say that OCEAN'S has a good chance of staying in number 1 for at least one week (and then it will fall...of course...LOTR!!)

Nope your all wrong, LOTR will open with 6.3 million and top out at 15 million http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif I hope you hear the sarcasim coming out of my mouth. No but seriously, boxofficeguru says that Ocean's Eleven hold's the record for biggest friday to sunday opening in December, they also said that since LOTR is a wednesday to sunday release it can not beat Ocean's Eleven's record, but instead set the record for a wednesday to sunday release... Don't jump on my back, I am just going by what I read... IMHO I don't think there's a movie coming out this December that can surpass 40 million dollers on opening weekend, they don't have the star power nor do they have the ability to do that.. I think the closet thing to come to the new record this December is going to be ALI with 31.2 million but that's just my opinion... The critic's are also calling Ocean's Eleven and Lord Of The Rings the two best movie's this December, Peter Travers say's "Ocean's 11 is the coolest movie of the year".. I like that guy, he has great taste in movie's, You Go Peter http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

There is no doubt in my mind that Lord Of The Rings is gonna beat Oceans 11's record. It's so obvious.....I predict LOTR to make:

$32 million opening day Wed
$25 million Thurs
$60 million for the weekend

giving it $117 million in it's first 5 days..

Hey, Idealdiscountdude, did you not read my post above? Where I stated that LOTR can not break O's 11 record because it's a wednesday to sunday release, if not you should read it, It's the facts courtasey (sp.) of Boxofficeguru.com.....

and IMHO there is no way in hell LOTR will get 117 million in it's first 5 days, it will top out at 95 or 96 million...

Like I mentioned on another board, a friend of mine had the misfortune of seeing VANILLA SKY last night. It's an incomprehensible mess, he says. His final words to me: "Avoid like the plague!"

RE: The thing is that Vanilla Sky is too "difficult" and avant-gardish for mainstream audiences. This however doesn't make it a bad film. Reviews so far have been mixed, but all the negative criticsm seems to complain about the film being too confusing, too weird, too hard to access.

I think that anyone expecting a standard popcorn flick or a typical Tom Cruise film should stay far away from Vanilla Sky.

Personally I think I'm going to like it a lot.

I trust my friend. He's a smart moviegoer, far from mainstream but no film snob either. He just thinks the movie is pretentious and preposterous. Cruise and Cruz have zero chemistry. He didn't care about the characters and quickly lost interest in solving the "puzzle."

Lord Of The Ring will do better than Ocean 11 for sure

travolta, actually it is entirely possible for Lord of the Rings to take away Oceans 11`s record. All Lord of the Rings has to do is make more money than Oceans 11 did on its opening weekend. Not the day it opens, its opening weekend. Say it with me now. And im sure it will do that. Commercials with Lord of the Rings reviews are running now, all over the place, and with comments like this movie is getting expect it to have an opening AND legs.

No reason to shout, you could just simply point out that i'm wrong, try doing this "I disagree, because i read the site alot, and I have not seen that as of it" now that would have been much easier, I would have completely understood, I wouldn't of said shit, I would gone on my way knowing that I was wrong... Anyway, i just don't understand why everyone think's (or in this case seem's to know) that Lord Of The Rings will be the biggest thing since sliced bread. Sure it will do well (at least I hope it does) at the box office but it's not going to be the biggest thing in the world, it has no chance in hell of breaking Titanic's record. Maybe it's just all this "One Movie To Rule Them All" bullshit that's annoying me. It will not and I repeat will not Rule Them All so to speak. In order for it to rule them all, it will have to break Titanic's record, and we all should know that that's not going to happen.. LOTR, maybe it will be huge, maybe it will break Ocean's Eleven, I hope not but it probaly will. You see IMHO Ocean's Eleven is the better movie of the two, more entertaining, and not as long as LOTR is... That's just my opinion, if you want to prevent me from getting pissed I don't think you should Lash out at me becuase I said O's 11 was better.... Even though I would like to check out LOTR again (The effects were amazing) I still don't think that it's the best movie of all time, then again that could be because I'm not that big into LOTR.. One more thing, to me it dosen't matter what the critic's think (shit, were usally wrong) I do not go to movies based on what the critic's are saying, because we (the critics) are wrong 90% of the time... So just because it's getting rave reveiws, dosen't mean I am going to rush out and see it again right away... But it is a god/fun movie to watch..

NOTE: My LOTR reveiw will be up on December 17th. Due to the fact that I am not allowed to say anything good or bad about the movie until then.

dicaprio_travolta_man.....

Firstly, I'm far from shouting, secondly the reason I corrected you is beacuse you have gotten facts wrong alot, I know I'm not perfect but you should not tell me when I post something that I'm wrong and then use false information to back yourself up. You can tell me I'm wrong, that's fine by me, I appreciate getting corrected when I'm wrong however when you use false information and state things that aren't true, then I surely will correct you....that's why I did it....

Lord of the Rings will definitely beat the opening 3-DAY weekend record held by Ocean's 11, but it won't be by much, because the a good portion of the fans will rush to see it on Wednesday and Thursday, leaving only the mildly curious for the weekend(and don't start in on a hissy fit saying that all of the fans including you will be back for every showing during the weekend, because, believe it or not, SOME PEOPLE WILL BE SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED! Sorry that's in all caps but every post i read on the flick says that everybody on the whole planet will see it ten times and then recommend it to there friends.

Question for dicapriotravoltaman:

Why would you lie in the first place? You admit you're wrong about it being on that website, but why ever make a claim you knew to be false?

dicaprio_travolta_man
12-13-2001, 04:19 AM
I'm sorry for lying, I really am, But I had to do it becuase I just don't want LOTR to beat O's 11 (even though it will) I guess at that time I was afraid of reality so I had to do something to make me think that O's 11 would not be beaten, but it will and I accept that now.. Please accept my apology (sp.) it will not happen again..

idealdiscountdude, I completely understand, I won't let it happen again... You guy's are right I can't use false info to back myself up, but I did, I know it was a bad mistake but it felt like the right thing to do at the time..

RE At least here in Finland wednesday and thursday showing were sold out in two days. Most of the LOTR fans have to see it afterwards, because the tickets are not available. The film is not gonna drop much after the first two days, if it's gonna drop at all. However, it COULD drop around 50% on the second weekend, but I doubt it. The word of mouth and critical response are excellent so far.

EXCUSE ME!!!

Ok, let me just say that dicaprio_travolta_man doesn't need to apoligize because he wasn't making it up, he was telling the truth, I read the EXACT same thing, and I think it might have been from Box Office Guru but if it wasn't it was from another movie site. Either way he wasn't wrong he just might have gotten the site mixed up.

I'm not trying to take sides or anything but all this arguing is pointless because no matter what site it was at "IT WAS SAID" and that's the main point.

Since LORD OF THE RINGS opens on a Wednsday it won't be counted for biggest opening weekend so OCEAN'S ELEVEN could hold onto that spot, and it probably will.

Again, I'm not trying to be an ass hole and I'm not trying to take sides but STOP THE FIGHTING, STOP THE MADNESS!!! It seems like everyone is attacking everyone around here lately, geesh...

I read it too! And I want LOTR to beat Ocean's 11. He said he was lying but in effect he wasn't (not that I can remember anyway).

And yes, stop fighting for God's sakes. I'm fairly sure we're all mature human beings here.

Actually guys he had every right to apologize, especially for lashing out at everybody, it's uncalled for.......

Plus he said he lied about it....not to mention that I checked boxofficeguru and Gitesh Pandya did not say that at all.........

If we are all supposedly mature human beings here, than we should correct people when they are wrong. Lying about things is not a very fun or fair way to do business and I'm actually ver happy that dicaprio_travolta_man had the guts to admit he lied and also for apologizing for lashing out.

Everybody makes mistakes, I sure as hell do and dicaprio_travolta_man did and now he's apologized for them...most people wouldn't....

Well, he wasn't wrong and the only reason I think he apoligized and said he lied was so the argument didn't get any bigger. But he secretly knew he was right and he WAS RIGHT. Maybe Box Office Guru didn't say it but some other movie place did so he was only wrong about the place that said it. And that's no big deal because everyone makes mistakes. But it was said and that's all that matters. He wasn't lying, but he just said he was for the sake of argument and I must say that was very big of him...

Now I'm not sticking up for anyone's bitching because there's no call for it no matter what but I will stick up for him and say he wasn't wrong because I heard it too.

He apologized beacuse he knew he was wrong in the fact that he quoted a site as saying something they didn't....but anyways it was very big of him to apologize, it was nice to see him do it so let's get on with what this site is all about, MOVIES.....

Guys, please calm down now. There have been a lot of arguments in this forum lately (mostly involving the same people), and it has to stop. Please respect each other, don't fight over small things, and don't assume others hold something personal against you. In other words, let's all be mature - I hope that's not too much to ask. This thread will be locked.
