Seriously.
When watching the original not too long ago, as well as Freddy Vs. Jason I was reminded of this. For a brief period in the film, the story took focus, and many scenes were focused on speculation, parental manipulation, as well as theories and hypotheses of what was going on.
The latter films tended to go the way of tits, gore, and corny Freddy one-liners with Krueger doing stupid shit.
I was really getting into the vibe of F Vs. J when they took a few time outs and went to the sanitarium and developed a little there, and the scene with Laurie and her father. Then the film got stupid. I actually was impressed by the thought that Lori's father was the doctor from part three, but after looking it up on IMDB, I found that I was wrong for believing they would use the brain power to do this. At least they got the hypnocil shit going.
But seriously again, slow the shit down. Take time to tell the story, give us a few good creep outs and scares before things get into the realm of 'Ultra-Violent'. This popcorn shit needs to go, feed it to the birds. Same with Friday the 13th. For years, we were led with stalking and small scares while being led to a big finale. Now it's 'do some stereotypical pot smoking and drinking, and when that gets boring, cue in the guy with the mask and let him cut off someone's head.'
As said by a friend of mine, its as if these future filmmakers just seem to have never seen a Freddy or Jason movie, but know those basic stereotypes with the films and intend to make films on those stereotypes alone.
