By far mine are:
1. The asteroid field in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
2. The Tyrannosaur paddock attack in JURASSIC PARK
Technically the Gungans battle in Episode I was amazing...taking into consideration that there were nothing there...that's purely visual effects.
Even in this case I really think that in this area a new page in history will be written on December 16th, when Lord of the Rings will be finally released.
Technically, all of the CGI sequences in Jurassic Park are superior.

Not a CGI wonder, but certainly graphically stunning was any scene with the monster in The Thing. Squishy

Definately the T-Rex attack scene in JP, and the Gallimimus scene in JP, and the battle between the T-Rex and the Raptors at the end of Jp.

I have to agree with Professor Steve on his number one pick:
1) The asteroid field in Star Wars: Episode IV; A New Hope. Still don't know precisely how they did it.
2) The Podrace in Star Wars: Episode I; The Phantom Menace.
3) The walkerscenes in Star Wars: Episode V; The Empire Strikes Back.
4) The effects of The Matrix.
5) The Skeletons in the old sixties version of Jason and the Argonauts.
6) The monstereffects in The Thing (1981?).
7) Almost everything from the first Jurassic Park-film.
8) The T-1000 in Terminator 2; Judgement Day.
9) The effects of the film Forrest Gump.
10) Pearl Harbor attacksequence.

1°) Asteroid chase in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
2°) Podrace in THE PHANTOM MENACE
3°) Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon/Maul fight in THE PHANTOM MENACE
4°) The whole goddamn JURASSIC PARK movie!
5°) Cyborg fights (see T-1000) from TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY

The matrix has nice special effects, but the best ever done and the revolutionary ones are in T-2 and the Starwars movies...

LOL You guys cant be serious about all of those "technically amazing" scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy, and ESPECIALLY the new trilogy; the CGI in that is crap. But as for your amazement with the asteroid scene from Star Wars,.....it is called a green screen, and miniatures. ............geez LOL I cant believe that you people were so amazed by that. LOL

We can all agree that The Matrix's bullet-dodging scene was the best. That and all the scenes with the T-1000 in T-2.

To Dumb-Fokker,
You have to see the special effects in their time-context, than they are unbelievable, ok! As far as I believe it's not only a green screen (or blue screen) and miniatures that they used for the asteroidsequence in The Empire Strikes Back. How were they able to let the Millenium Falcon fly so fluently through the asteroid field for instance? Probably not with the stop-motion technigue, because that would make the flying of the spaceship look more shocky. And how did they make the asteroids turn around and pass by the ships that were flying through the asteroidfield? You also have to add (include) the effects of the exploding Tie-fighters in the asteroidsequence. If you put all these remarks together you probably would also say that it's a very very complicated special effects sequence for that time!

Though not my favorite, T2(using the technology first developed for The Abyss) contained the most ground really paved the way for all future cgi.
Though maybe not the best film, Hollow Man had some revolutionary fx's.

I've always loved the stop-motion/puppet T-800 endoskeleton from Terminator. Maybe not the greatest fx sequence, but still quite kool, even next to some of today's work.

The lightcycle race from TRON, the climactic battle in Dark City, and the Wormhole sequence in Contact are all great.
Although if you ask me about my favorite FX sequences again in a couple years, I bet they'll all be from Lord of the Rings...

The Delorean in BACK TO THE FUTURE when it would hit 88mph and explode leaving a trail of fire. That looked excactly as it should have looked and even though it was a simple effect, it was really imaginative and way cool. When they made it fly - That was pretty off looking, but a good scene because of the writing.
