View Full Version : I'm convinced Netflix is a cult

I'm afraid to try out Netflix. At this point I'm convinced that it's some sort of bizarre religious cult. I'm certain that along with your first DVD comes a robe or black sweatsuit, a comfortable pair of Nikes, possibly a strange looking pack of kool-aid, and your DVD contains subliminal messages.
Why do I feel this way? Just venture over the DVD forum and select any topic having anything do with with scratched rentals, blockbuster or Hollywood video fucking someone up the ass yet again, or ones of similar themes. Invaribly along the way about a dozen schmoes who have apparently been initiated into the cult began extolling the virtues of Netflix. It's as if Netflix is beyond reproach and renting dvds from netflix is better than recieving the best oral sex in the world from Angelina Jolie (or whatever actress or actor you currently have the hots for...but lets be honest Angelina lips were put on earth for one thing).. Anyways I'm of the opinion that no service can be this great. Blockbuster has only pissed me off twice in probably thousands of movies I've rented from them over the years. Thats a damn good batting average (definitly better than anythign on my fantasy team).
The bottom line is that no large company like this can really be that great. They have to be drugging their users into believing they are. The ATF really needs to be looking into this operation. I feel strongly about this.

I'm glad there's at least one other schmoe who isn't singing the high praises of Netflix (at least not yet). I like the concept, but there's not an overwhelming number of movies I wanna rent that'd necessitate $20 a month in credit card bills, even when I'm not using it. And I just love that feeling of being in a rental store and seeing stuff available to rent right then instead of browsing netflix online on my slow 56k

Well, let's see.
I just started a membership to NETFLIX two weeks ago.
During the last two weeks I've rented Sopranos season 1: discs 1-4, Starship Troopers 2, Sopranos season 2: disc 1, 50 First Dates, Matrix 2, Matrix 3, and Center of the World.
One disc of the Sopranos series skipped in one episode for about two minutes' worth of viewing. All the other movies I've rented have been flawless.
This is in the last two weeks. I get my disc in the mail in one day. If I return a disc, they notify me of receiving that disc I mailed THE NEXT DAY.
It's $20 a month with no late fees. This month alone (if I rent no more movies) I will have rented 10 discs.
In Hawaii, a DVD rental at Blockbuster cost me $4.98, and I'm almost always late on that rental.
Here in California, a DVD rental costs me $3.79 - a BIG improvement! But still; I'm always late returning them.
I can return my Netflix rentals whenever I want to, and since all I have to do is put the disc back in the envelope they gave me and stick it in the mailbox when I check my mail, I'm more consistent at returing them!
So, maybe it IS a cult, but this cult is the coolest damned cult I've ever come across!
I have 133 DVDs in my rental queue. I can keep 500 in my queue, and re-organize the list however I see fit.
Basically, instead of $10 for a movie rental (or $8 here in the good old mainland), I pay about $2.00 a disc for rentals at Netflix.
If I have a scratched disc, or the occasional incorrect disc mailed, or the inconvenience of not having that hot little rental in my hands that very second, I have to consider all the other PROs to using Netflix (MONEY! SAVE MONEY!).
I am having the time of my life renting movies I never WANTED to rent because I could never justify paying ten bucks for a movie I hate (but you never know; something MIGHT be good! I could be missing out!). This was especially apparent after I rented Rose Red and The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer one night. I was late on both rentals, and I hated those movies so much that I wanted to burn down Blockbuster. Especially the latter rental.
I wasted good dough on those big fat steaming piles of horrendous stinking shit-odored celluloid.
With Netflix, I return it when I want to with no fear of paying a penalty for being late.
There's why I enjoy Netflix.
I still haven't gotten my robe and Nikes yet, though. Damnit. I'm ready for the next level!!;)

Last year I moved from San Francisco to Minneapolis, and I can attest that NetFlix in the Bay Area is AWESOME. I had canceled before moving and signed up again after I relocated. Initially, the service in the Twin Cities was great, and like KC Masterpiece lauds, there was only a one-day turnaround most of the time. That produces a lot of bang for your $20 bucks.
But I recently canceled again and have gone back to video stores. Why? Because Netflix's popularity is skyrocketing here, and now, turnaround times in MPLS are like 4-5 days. Screw that. I have permanently resigned my membership as a Branch Netflixian.
So I think one's opinion of Netflix is probably dependent on the supply/demand/geographical location factors.

Well I think Netflix and others of it's ilk are going to get a run for their money as at least blockbuster is starting to catch on.
They now offer a monthly fee just like Netflix and you can take out up to 3 movies keep them as long as you like or bring them in an exchange them whenever.
Yes the fee is a bit higher but you get the movies instantly.'
Sure there are trade offs you only get what your blockbuster has, and if it is out you are out of luck.
But for those who have to wait days for their stuff from Netflix this may be the alternative.
And no I do not work for blockbuster and I have neither the netflix or the blockbuster monthly thing.

I thought the Blockbuster deal was only for 2 movies at a time? If it was for 3 that would be a better deal than Netflix in my opinion.

Hmm, maybe it's different in different places then. Because where I am, it's 2 movies at a time.

Yeah, well, isn't JoBlo's movie club also sort of a religous cult. See what I mean, it's all in how you look at it.

It doesn't become a cult until you transcend Platinum Membership status. That's when it gets groovy. Of course you can only get there if you are the blood relative of a Platinum Member, or have murdered a video store clerk.
It's somewhere there in the fine print. Don't you people ever check your credit card statements?
LOL - awesome rant BTW.

Even so, I’d say Netflix is far superior if only for, like you kinda said, their selection; their 20,000 movies include lots of obscure and little-known ones that Blockbuster wouldn’t dream of carrying.
Not that that makes a difference when it comes to whether they’d stay in business or not. I certainly hope this Blockbuster monthly thing doesn’t take them out, but I do hope it takes away some of their customers so that I can get movies quicker. I’m a jerk. :D
Also, to those of you who don’t like how popular Netflix is here (although I don’t really understand why that would bug you), why not try it? There’s a free trial when you start.

Haha that's how it all starts out. It's all fun and games; you're going out with your newfound friends, they pay for everything and you do fun and innocent things together.
Six months later you're sucking cock for smack, sacrificing your goldfish to Satan and paying all your income to your newfound drug habit - all brought on by your loyalty to your 'friends'.
So yes, Netflix has a free trial.
Try it.
I did. And I love it!

Yes..Netlix IS the greatest thing since sliced bread..in the world of movie viewing...its the 9th fucking wonder of the world :D
Not only will I sing its praises..I will fucking YODEL them! :p
The ONLY corporation that has truly done any damn good for my life.
I heard they opened up a Chicago distribution center...I spent 2 hours trying to find the address to no avail..( I wanna work there)and I am pretty good at find shit on the net...maybe they are a cult... if so, I'll gladly buy my own robes. ;)

I am a Branch Netflixian
It'll get even better when they build their distribution center in Las Vegas (maybe I can just drive or walk over and pick up my DVD's).
Something else I love about them is customer service. A few times I've ha a bad disc and their customer service has always been helpful when I've sent it back and recieved another (I contact them to notify them the disc is bad so they don't keep sending out the same bad disc to other customers).
I'm so devoted to NetFlix, I sewed my own robe out of human hair.....

Obviously, I must be one of the personality types that cults just love.
Send me my secret decoder ring, tamborine, and leaflets.
I'm now ready to become a NetVidian, in the Order of the NetGate.
BTW, Will we have to go door knocking in pairs on Saturdays, or hang out at the local video stores to enlist new converts so we can increase our numbers?

I joined Netflix last month and absoluately love it! Quick turn around and I haven't been rammed in the ass once!
I did however get a red robe instead of a black one and am wondering about those noises outside my bedroom window at night...

I just wish there were still good independant video stores left in the Saint Louis area. I haven't seen any at all.
The mom and pop chains are typically $3ish a rental in my experience, and old flicks (a big part of what I watch) often $2 or less. I rarely want to rent more than one or two movies a week anyway, so NetFlix's only major appeal is its GIGANTIC selection.
