Responding in the "for or against" gay marriage thread, I started to wonder....

Please bare with me. This is a bit sparse, but maybe you all could get this snowballing.......

Why has the gay marriage scandal all of a sudden become such a huge issue?

People have been getting married in Hawaii and Vegas for over a decade now.

Many people speculated it's to detract attention from other problems such as the war, the economy -- And many others speculate that it is a noble, just cause.

But something made more sense to me.....

Does anyone think that Bush might be taking this political stance, knowing that many Christians are down about the Church Scandal, and that this would provide some moral footing, and win him some votes?

I'm not accussing anyone of anything -- I'm just asking if anyone else has thought of this, or if maybe there is some theories about this discussed. I could say it is an interesting juxtaposition, but maybe I'm just a bit paranoid.

Are you proposing that Bush or whoever in charge increased the emphasis on the gay marriage issue so his religious fans who were outraged by the catholic priest scandal, would have something to complain about and feel better about themselves?

Not proposing it, but am wondering if anyone has.

I can't imagine it is too much of an original thought. Conspiracists are rampant, especially on the net. I'd be suprised that it hasn't been proposed.

I think it's an interesting theory, but I was always under the impression that Catholics usually vote Democrat in general. At least thats the stereotype anyways. I realize there are of course Republican Catholics out there.

So i'm not sure people who generally vote Dem would switch over to Bush just because he may have drawn some attention away from their child "loving" clergymen.

The reason this got big all of a sudden is becasue people are mad that the MassSupreme court (in asplit decision -one vote difference I think -4 to 3?) took the issue into their own hands and legislated from the bench. I'm pretty sure that Bush is in favor of State's right's for these things, but now, since the issue is being forced, he has initiated the Constitutional Amendment to force the peoples representatives to vote on the issue instead of having the court force it on people.

The amendment will never pass- he knows this. It takes a two thirds vote to change the constitution (including each state). Teh country is too evenly divided to ever pass something like this. Its the principle of the thing. Same with the abortion issue. People feel the court legislated from the bench and didn't allow the people a voice in the issue.

The courts are getting too powerful and it disrupts the balance of power in our country-executive branch, legislative branch and judicial branch- they need to keep each other in check.

Yeah, which is why I think they shouldn't have increased the executive branch's power so much after 9/11.
