I'm the on verge of moving into a new home in my area, and I came across a book on horror movies called 'The Movie Treasury: Horror Movies - Tales of Terror in Cinema' by Alan G. Frank published by Octopus.

I'm wondering if anyone else knows about this book, since it looks pretty old (late 70s-early 80s), and only dates movies up til 1979. It covers Dracula, Frankenstien, The Mummy, and all the other classic horror movie monsters. It talks about Christopher Lee and his role as Dracula in the hammer films and what-not, too. I haven't read that much, but it does give out some pretty handy info on how Universal went through making these movies as well as backstories on the creatures.

Sounds good, I'd hit it.

Oh and good luck with the moving and such.

Yeah I have that book, I think I was rambling on about it on these boards one time. It’s the big hard cover version right? I got it at a flea market and it even has that awful old book smell every time you turn the page. Pretty in-depth and covers the beginnings of horror on through the early seventies. I only wish they had a chapter on the silent horror movies. Highly recommended. I guess he has books on Western, gangster, and thriller movies as well.

My dad stole his copy from some book store when he was 20.

Anyway, the book is black with (what appears to be) skeleton people on horses or something. When you open it, you see Christopher Lee about to bite some woman.

So far I've read the sections on Frankenstein and Dracula.

I'm leafing through a similar book called "A Pictorial History of Horror Movies" that was published in 1974. It takes an in-depth look at the silent era and hits the obvious landmarks (Drac, Frankie, Kong, etc.). It contains a multitude of posters, stills, and other rare goodies. I choke up whenever I read a sentence that begins with, "The Hammer movies of today..."

Oh my gosh I use to have this book. I love finding old shit like that. I am slowly over the course of the next few years reclaiming all of the lost books I use to have as a kid. Thanks to ebay and some great stores around here I have gotten a few most treasured ones back.

Why were the late 60's and 70's the only time it seemed where so many wonderful pictorials were done on horror and sci-fi? There was almost a new book out a week for a fifteen year period. Too bad there are so few good ones now, with the exception of Europe. I believe they still make some amazing oversized texts.
