From IMDB:
Veteran Star Trek actor James Doohan has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The 84-year-old - who is most famous for playing Scotty in the sci-fi program and was often on the receiving end of Captain Kirk's phrase "Beam me up, Scotty" - has been discovered to be suffering from the most common form of dementia. His wife, Wende Doohan, 47, says, "With Jimmy it's the loss of words. He is not so sick yet that he doesn't know people. And there are times when he is sharp as a tack. But it's the older memories that stick. What he had for breakfast might be an iffy thing, but by golly he could tell you all about how he got the part on Star Trek." A Hollywood tribute will be paid to the father-of-three next month.
I guess it shouldn't be surprising, considering he's 84, but it's still sad. I mean, c'mon...who doesn't like Scotty?

That's awful. Two of my grandparents have dementia, but my grandmother on my mother's side is the one with Alzheimer's. Diagnosed a year ago, and she has changed A LOT since. Her memory isn't going too badly yet, but she looks like she aged 10 years and is weak. It's terrible seeing loved ones fade like this.

He's a Hell of a man, too. Canadian Army in WWII, he was present at D-Day.
For a long time, he was my favorite member of the original series cast.
And (in Geek mode), Kirk never actually said those exact words.

Man, I remember watching the old Star Trek series when I was younger, and saying to myself, 'Beam Me Up Scotty!'.
This sucks.

It's sad. Scotty was the best part of Star Trek.

What the Master said. I feel sorry for anyone with this disease. It's just horrible.

Didn't he just have a baby a few years back? I feel bad for the kid. I really love Scotty in the original Star Trek- are those on DVDs yet- greatest sci-fi ever! Great stories, great character interaction. Loved Scotty! The new Star Treks never had a clue that the success of that show was related to the conflicts between the characters-not the loftiness of space travel.

It looks like there are only two episodes per DVD. I didn't see any for the first season of the origianl series. Pretty greedy. Hope I'm wrong. If so let me know!
