OH YES I JUST PUT A THUMBS-UP NEXT TO THIS MOVIE.

That's right, bring 'em on

SYNOPSIS: Will Ferrell ("Elf," "Old School") stars as Ron Burgundy, the top-rated anchorman in San Diego in the ‘70s. When feminism marches into the newsroom in the form of ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate - "View From the Top," TV’s "Married With Children"), Ron is willing to play along at first—as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it’s more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor-persons…it’s war.

STARRING: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Fred Willard

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

My thoughts on this? It's the #1 film I'm looking foward to this year. It looks like stupid Will Ferrell fun, which is what this country needs more than anything right now.

I just have one question for everyone:

I'm Ron Burgundy?
:D

But anyway, yesh this film looks hi-larious. I enjoyed Will Ferrell's last 2 films, Old School and Elf (both 7/10), a lot, and this one looks to be just as silly. I love Will Ferrell's hair and mustache too, the whole 70s thing is definitely another selling point for the movie.

Also, Fred Willard, who is great in all the Christopher Guest films, is in this too, so that's awesome. Plus Vince Vaughn has an uncredited role, and the writer/director, Adam McKay, was SNL's head writer from 96-01.

He kicked serious ass on SNL. It is remarkable how funny he was on that show. How many memorable characters? Too many to count. Dubya, The Lovers, Craig the Cheerleader, Alex Trebek, the Blue Oyster Cult skit, the list goes on and on. The man is hilarious, and this movie looks great. Can't wait to see it.

Ferrel is the only reason to see this , with anyone else as the lead it would be an insufferable bore of a dumbed down comedic cliche . It also looks like he has zippo chemistry with Applegate , but i blame that on her , she was really only good in Married with Children , but she had alot of help on that show . Ferrel looks to be totally unleashed in this thing , that's when he's at his best , and worst .

Wonder if the title is a sly homage to the film Pornstar : The Legend of Ron Jeremy .

MadsenOMC
07-05-2004, 11:12 AM
I don't think this is an homage to that. It's been his dream project for a very long time. And I'm not really concerned about any chemistry he has or doesn't have with Applegate. Not in a movie like this. It's not a serious romance.

Applegate has been good in the last 2 movies she was in..both movies weren't that good but she was good in them..she also is still pretty hot ( check her out in the NY Daily News Magazine from yesterday..she looks great ).

That's the thing , that joke is pretty damn lame on paper , but with his delivery it might work , he's a hit or miss comedian , when he's on he's hilarious , when he's even slightly off , he won't even illicit a chuckle .

And Mad , i'm not saying the movie itself is a homage or reference to Pornstar , just the title itself .

Yeah , i agree it will be good , but i don't see any other reason to see it other than the fact that Ferrel is the lead , everyone else in this looks like comedic fodder for him , doubt anyone else will stand out , and you know for sure , the obligatory celebrity cameos that H wood finds so clever will be in abundance , hey maybe Jeremy will make an appearance since his film is where they got the title .

Got back from this movie a couple of hours ago and just laughed all over talking about this movie.

There are sooo many "classic" lines in this film, it will merit a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc viewing. Will Ferrell is hysterical in every way. Steve Carrell, I think, stole the show as the absolutely hilarious "retard" Brick. Every scene he was in had me damn near on the floor laughing.

There are a few scenes that go a bit over the top, but that's Will Ferrell's style. The "turf" war was insanely great w/ a ton of cameos and memorable moments.

The love story was real simple so it wasn't sappy. Christina Applegate looked good throughout and was enjoyable.

I was really eager to see this movie and held my expectations back a bit, so I wasn't dissappointed. A very welcome summer comedy blockbuster. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Austin Powers, or crazy F'd up fun... this movie is for you. [Not that this movie needs my 2 cents to make $200 mil]

Can't wait for the DVD releases... there's going to be ton's of deleted scenes, bloopers/outtakes, etc. Stay for the credits and the scene at the end of the credits... funny stuff.

I'd say it was funny: how funny I'm not sure about yet, I'll sleep over it. Not all of Ferrell's antics did something for me, the guy with the cowboy hat was pretty annoying and by the end I had forgotten a lot of it. However, it did keep me entertained throughout, I enjoyed the cameos and the part where Jack Black kicks the dog off the bridge was awesome. Applegate also wasn't as bad as I expected her to be, and Steve Carell made for more great moments. I was surprised though how much of the material in the trailers wasn't used, but I guess it didn't bother me too much.

6 or 7/10.

Ben Stiller yet again, wait is that correct? Yes it is! He only plays a cameo though as a competing news channel reporter, so we don't have to sweat bullets for too long. Okay so perhaps I introduced the film in a negative manner, and that was a bad start. Will Ferrell is one of the greatest comedians of this decade. He succeeds yet again (as he always does), and most of the jokes are hits. Sure the anchor may take a while to hit the bottom of the ocean, but once it does it sticks! Burgundy's news team consists of: Steven Carell, the one with a very low IQ (also featured in the less-entertaining news spoof, Bruce Almighty), David Koechner as a redneck (always has that heavy tobacco-spitting accent), and Paul Rudd as the one that loves the ladies but doesn't understand the true meaning of love. Oh and there's a co-couple with Burgundy and Corningstone (Christina Applegate). The relationship hits big, but then it turns into a competition and eventually leads to the downfall of Burgundy's career when he reads "Fuck San Diego" on the teleprompter. It's easy to see that there was little editing, but editing nonetheless to barely maintain a PG-13 rating. Normally I would say shame on you for this tactic, as it is used to gross more money, but more power to you as it was funny 85% of the time. Hell even Fred Willard is great to see on-screen (in Best In Show and American Wedding) as the boss of the news network, who is disrupted by daily phonecalls from his son's school for being on acid. Like Dodgeball, there's plenty of slapstick humor, but unlike Dodgeball, there's cleverness carefully wrapped around it. My main complaint is that the trailer truly did ruin some great moments, and from what I heard the Comedy Central featurette spoiled even more. The other complaint is that Steven Carell played a stupid and slow guy that did silly things but often abruptly ended the slew of jokes that nearly made me burst with tears (happy laughing tears that is). Ron Burgundy has some elements of Austin Powers in him, but it has been adjusted dramatically so we in no way possible mistake it for being a "cop-off". With a handful of cameos like: dreadful Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Jack Black (hilarious in who he is and what he does), and even Tim Robbins, it's impossible to ignore all the great fun there is to absorb. Anchorman outdoes the somewhat unsatisfying Bruce Almighty by far, and... I'm sorry we have urgent news: Just go see it! Pay how you will to get in, but just make sure you DO IT! DO IT!

YES!! I tabbed Anchorman as the years funniest film back in January so there were very high expectations. Although it wasnt insanely funny it was definately satisfying. It had plenty of those piss your pants jokes in it to keep me on the edge of tears and alot of those little chuckle jokes that we all love. The thing that also carries it is the story. I mean this was just a cool idea and when you add in the rival news stations, it was pretty funny. Lots of good cameos make it a treat as well. Anchorman may be the funniest film of the year, I may have to see Girl Next Door again to compare but Anchorman is a must see.

As I fully expected, Anchorman was a total blast. Will Ferrell has to be one of the funniest and most talented people in entertainment right now. I don't think anyone could have pulled this off but him. It totally met or even exceeded my expectations. ***minor spoiler****

The only crappy part was Ben Stiller's cameo. I know I'll probably get reemed for this, but he is not funny at all. Just seeing him made me stop laughing. Vince Vaughan, Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson are much funnier than Stiller. When will people realize that he isn't funny? Hopefully very soon, because I can't stand him. I'm glad he was only in that one scene, because he would have brought down the film. Other than Stiller, Anchorman was extremely funny...

Why do they still think these cameos are so clever , why , drop them already . Main character drives through an LA backlot on his way to work , oops there's Ben Stiller on the street corner , and he's just been splashed by the puddle of water the main character has just driven through , holy fuck , how hilarious , snot is coming out of my nose . Oh no , wait , who's that on the train next to the main character's girlfriend , Jack Black , more hilarity , oh please stop . Oh no , who is that guy walking down the street , Donald Trump , oh genius , it just keeps getting better . Everyone should see this. I found it really funny. My favorite scenes were the conclusion with Baxter, the "professional" tour Ron gives Veronica of San Diego from atop the hill (best dialogue of the film), the turf war, and Jack Black's cameo and everything that happens in that scene.

This is Will Ferrell's best film, by far. I love Old School, but this is classic stuff. The biggest surprise of this film was Applegate. I wasn't expecting a lot from her, but she really showed up and gave a convincing and enjoyable performance. And oddly, she and Ferrell do have good chemistry. And Ron Burgandy is a pimp!

And the rest of the news team is just as strong. I commented to my friend after this that usually in a comedy liek this, it rests on the shoulders of the lead actor, and everyone else is just there. While Ferrell is strong here, the rest of the cast reallt compliments him and brings a lot to the table. It's the perfect blend of comedy and feelings (call me crazy, but I was actually feeling emotions for these characters). Go see it if you haven't.

No matter what Ferrel does now , people will think he's funny , and he is , but really , when the alternatives are a wacked out Jack Black ( soon to be serious in King Kong , oh boy ) , a redundant sophmoric Adam Sandler , the ubiquitous Ben Stiller , an aging Tim Allen , the overrated puppet of Spileberg Tom Hanks , or any of a number of the inane pop tart teen queens that come out with films every week , who or what else is there besides Will Ferrel , there really isn't that much else out there , not too many other comedic options , so more formula comedy with a poular comedic actor will keep on coming off the assembly line fast and furious before people tire of his shtick . May not be for awhile , but just in case , they have to crank out as many of his films as possible so they don't miss out on the money train .

And , man , they are plugging this film way too freakin much , now they have the RB character conducting real interviews , hosting MTV news , doing skits on the MTV music awards , please enough already .

Ferrellfan, you are not the only one who found it OK but not that funny. I certainly didn't dislike it, but it wasn't nearly as funny as I expected and hoped it would be. I didn't laugh nearly as often as I thought I would. Sometimes I laughed at things that weren't even that funny, like I thought I should be laughing, or because other people were laughing. IMO, for every joke that worked, there was one that didn't. I hated the Champ character. I thought he was an annoying idiot. Whammy? That was seriously not funny. The Jack Black cameo didn't make me laugh, until he kicked the dog off the bridge. Brick was funny at times and just as unfunny at other times. Some of his random quips just were not amusing. Paul Rudd wasn't as funny as I thought he would be either. The cameos were more distracting than funny. More like, "Oh, look who it is" than anything. Vince Vaughn was nothing special either. Some of it was hilarious. I loved it when he said about the milk, "That was a bad choice." I did laugh a lot, but only about half of the time. Maybe it gets better with repeat viewings, after expectations are lowered. I also thought most of the funny parts were in the trailers and TV spots, which is never a good thing. I expected to be laughing the entire time, and I definitely wasn't. I think I prefer Dodgeball to be perfectly honest.

I saw it again last night, and there is definitely no Paris Hilton cameo. You're probably right about it being cut though...I heard there is an extra 1hr 40mins of this film left on the cutting room floor. The DVD is rumored to feature another film besides Anchorman consisting of everything they cut. It should be pretty hilarious and may feature that Hilton cameo you are talking about.

About Tim Robbins...I think they chose him because his view points line up with Public Television/NPR. I thought it was strange at first, but since he is pretty much a bleeding heart liberal, I thought maybe that's why they chose him to play that small part. Just a thought. I liked his cameo, but wished the Stiller cameo went to Owen Wilson. I agree that the cameos are getting a bit stale. It's quite commonplace now.

Looking back , the whole celebrity cameo obsession is nothing new . If i remember correctly , 80's comedies were pretty liberal with the cameos , but at that time it didn't really bother , because i was younger and i thought it was funny , now it's tiring . But , i guess if you are going to have a bunch of throwaway scenes and sight gags , why not have a celebrity do it instead of an unknown shmoe . I wonder if these things are even planned in advance anymore . I wouldn't doubt if their friends happen to be strolling the studio lot in between shooting their own film and they stumble on someone else's set , and then hey , we have some extra film , why don't you do a little cameo . That's why Stiller is always in a lot of these cameos , He's always around somewhere shooting another film .

Here are my thoughts...though I don’t think too many will agree with them or like them. :D

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) – Based on Will Farrell’s comedic delivery in the footage shot exclusively for the promos, I was expecting at least a few laughs from the movie itself. Unfortunately, Farrell is never quite as funny as he was in the commercials, and this is all the more disappointing considering how easy the cocky local anchorman-type of character this is to spoof. While it started out dumb-but-tolerable, it progressively got worse and worse. When all is said and done, this is yet another repulsively stupid “comedy” with a script that a four-year old could have written, and for every moment that provided a chuckle, there are several others – like the free-for-all battle between the anchors, and the idiotic "Pleasure Land" sequence – that failed miserably. 3.5/10

6 or 7/10.

You hit the nail on the head, I couldn't say it better. I gave it a 8/10

Well, Anchorman wasn't as funny as I hoped it would be, but it still had it's moments (jazz flute scene) and some great one-liners ("I'm in a glass box of emotion!"). I'll give it another viewing or two on DVD as I feel it'll be thr same kind of movie as Zoolander in that it gets funnier after a few viewings...

My thoughts exactly. After I saw the movie, my first reaction was "meehh." I was expecting it to be this great, hilarious movie of the summer, ala Zoolander, but I don't know. It was funny, but I don't know if it was "ha ha" funny.

When I wasn't laughing, I felt like Anchorman was forcing a grin on my face. I really wasn't too excited for this movie. While I love Ferrell (who doesn't anymore?) the trailers and commercials did not have me convinced. Well, as previously stated, I laughed my ass off but there were some scenes that were so dead I couldn't help but chuckle. The Jack Black scene was by far the best of the film and I loved the randomness (flute scene?), however, the movie went from random mode to cheap humor too much. I love random comedies (the recent My Boss's Daughter) but cheap and often slapstick humor gets on my nerves (Meet the Parents). Basically what I planned on saying b4 i began to rant off was that Anchorman was incredibly stupid, but in a funny way. I agree with Madsen though, I liked Dodgeball more.

Well, overall anchorman was a tad dissapointing. It had plenty of great one-liners ("....I'm not even mad thats amazing!") and hilarous moments ("aqua lung jazz flute scene) and funny outakes too.But while it had all those things it was evenly matched by longs stretches of film that barely made me snicker.
And as for Tim Robbins its nice to see that i'm not the only one who said 'what the fuck is he doing here?'.

I think it's the funniest movie of the year. If you appreciate and enjoy what Ferrell usually does, you'll love this. A lot of improv and radom humor, and I'd say most of it works. I saw it opening night, then again Saturday night, and I can't help myself... it's so incredibly quotable.

I'm a huge Will Ferrell fan, I love what he does, and I hope the movie does well. Will's a hilarious guy, and so is everyone else in the cast. I'd give it a solid 9/10.

Oh, and one of my favorite lines:
"I may be wrong, but I believe diversity is an old, old wooden ship... used in the Civil War era."

Might as well of been called Will Ferrell Unleashed because that's essentially what Anchorman is. If you don't 'dig' on Ferrell's brand of over the top comedy, then this movie is not for you! However, I am a huge fan of the man and his movies so needless to say, I found this movie hilarious!

If you've seen any promotions for the movie you know Will Ferrell plays Ron Burgundy. He's "kind of a big deal" being the most popular anchorman in San Diego (which is German for whale's vagina). Burgundy and his fellow KVWN newscasters; Champ Kind (David Koechner), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) and Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd) are all perfectly happy until one day, there boss Ed Harken (Fred Willard) decides to bring diversity (an old, old Civil War boat) to the program by hiring a woman. The fellas are outraged but that doesn't stop them from making passes at her and Ron even falls in love with her. Ron's affection for Veronica leads to a hilarious scene where he explains love to his fellow newscasters by breaking out in song.

Ferrell is at the top of his game in Anchorman, delivering an excellent comedic performance. If you thought he was over the top in Old School or Elf, wait til you see him in this. However, he never goes so over the top he gets annoying...at least to me. I'm sure this movie might be a Will Ferrell "overload" for some people. The supporting cast is also solid, especially Steve Carell who has some of the movie's best lines.

I don’t have any real problems with Anchorman, except sometimes the movie got a little too over the top (i.e. the gang fight). However, nine times out of ten the movie worked with it’s many memorable scenes, great lines, cameos galore and some great comedic acting from the cast. Highly recommended for fans of Ferrell and silly comedies. 8/10

the funniest movie i've seen since billy madison and groundhog day. loved the turf war an obvios nod to gangs of new york. best bit was stiller and the planet of the apes nod. i almost choked to death during that scene. also, a lot of great comic book references for us comic geeks out there. "news team assemble!" and him blowing the sea horn.

Oh man. Ive seen them all, and I admit I liked Dodgeball, American Pie, Scary Movie, Van Wilder and Scream, but not one of those compares with Anchorman. Packed with more hilarious one liners than a Marx Bros. movie, Anchorman really did do a spot on job of making me laugh out loud. Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and Luke Wilson were the funniest guys in the movie.

"I'm riding a furry tractor!"

"Milk was not a good choice"

"In German San Diego means whale vagina."

"Good evening, Im Ron Burgandy?"

And lots, lots more. Anchorman wastes every other comedy film of the last decade.

Saw it tonight...hi-larious! 8/10, easily. One of the funniest movies I've seen in years.

There were like 8 people in the whole theater at the 8:45 showing tonight, and we all had a great time, laughing the whole way through.

I'd say the funniest part was the prank call to Veronica about how she is pregnant and has to move to Moscow. I almost died laughing, no joke (there's an ironic comment for ya!).

"What did she say?"
"I don't know, but I think she bought it."
