View Full Version : Movies based on H.P. Lovecraft's work
I've been hearing a lot about Re-Animator, and I noticed it was inspired by an H.P. Lovecraft story. I've done some research on IMDB and found some other Lovecraft-inspired flicks.
The Haunted Palace (1963)
The Dunwich Horror (1970)
Re-Animator (1985)
The Curse (1987)
Dark Heritage (1989)
Cast a Deadly Spell (1991)
The Resurrected (1992)
Necronomicon (1994)
Dagon (2001)
The Thing on the Doorstep (2003)
Has anyone seen any of these? What did you think? Are there any more adaptations, or anything inspired by Lovecraft's work?

Cast A Deadly Spell is excellent. I haven't seen it in years but it's an excellent movie set on an alternative Earth where magic, demons and Lovecraftian nasties all co-exist with humans. It stars Fred Ward who gives a fantastic performance as a classic hardboiled style detective. Very entertaining and certainly worth tracking down.

I've always wanted to see The Resurrected as it's reportedly a fairly faithful adaptation of Lovecraft's novella The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward. Can anyone who has seen the movie and read the novella confirm it's credentials? Is it as faithful as i've read?

Out of these movies I`ve only seen Dagon and it was a really good movie. Loved the fish people make-up. Anyhow, there are more movies more or less based on Lovecraft`s work.
From Beyond for example an even Lucio Fulci`s The Beyond and City of the Living Dead are somewhat based on Lovecraft`s work. In the Beyond there is a book called Eibon. The same book exists in Lovecraft`s mythos. (and no, it`s not the same as Necronomicon. There are more dark books in Lovecraft`s mtythos than Necronomicon). In City of the Living Dead most of the stuff takes place in Dunwitch, a town from Lovecraft`s writings. However, I donīt know how much those two movies are BASED on Lovecraft`s writings, because I don`t know if there are Seven Doors to Hell in Lovecraft`s mythos.

Castle Freak was a Lovecraftian movie? Weird. What story exactly?

b.t.w. I've seen Castle Freak. Pretty good movie, one very sick scene between the creature and a prostitute.
P.S. What's IMBD?
Did some research...Castle Freak is supposed to be loosely based on "The Outsider" which I guess was one of Lovecraft's short stories. IMDB stands for Internet Movie Database. It's a good source when researching movies, but steer clear from the forums...the posters are a bit, well, Non-Schmoe.

A few know about my love for the Re-Animator series, but I'll re-instate that anyway.
I must say Stuart Gordon directs the best Lovecraft films. I hear he's looking to do an adaptation of Thing on the Doorstep.

i adore re-animator its one of my favorite movies and i also love dagon, i'd really recommond either of those titles if you havent' gotten the chance to check them out.
I just found out there was another Herbert West movie that's actually a more true adaptation to the Lovecraft tale. It's titled "Imperfect Solution: A Tale of the Re-Animator." Apparently it's a period piece that takes place in the 1920's. Anyone see it?
