I was looking at what Sarah Michelle Gellar had on her plate on imdb and saw that after The Grudge she has this film Southland Tales. And looking at it, this certainly looks like it will be an interesting film. Richard Kelly (the writer/director of "Donnie Darko") will serve as writer and director of this film described as a musical/comedy set in 2008 where a three-day heatwave in Los Angeles culminates in a huge Fourth of July party. The official site up doesn't show much but is 'interesting' to say the least and along with Gellar in the cast is Seann William Scott, Jason Lee, Janeane Garafalo, Ali Larter, Tim Blake Nelson, Amy Poehler and Kevin Smith. Can't say it doesn't sound like it will be good.

If its a musical, I'll be there. Plus I think it'd be interesting to see Kevin Smith and Janene Garofelo singing.

Here's an older thread in which I replied: http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=74619

Reposting my response to that thread here:

i can't wait for this one!

the site is up with some neat atmospheric music and very cryptic messages and images...it's really beautifully put together though there's not much on it yet (click on the flag when you get into the "city shot" to get some of the images i'm talking about) but at least it seems kelly knows what he's doing with this.

and the music, whatever it is that is playing on the site...if it's any indication of the type of atmosphere the film will be going for, i REALLY can't wait. though it has been billed as a musical comedy...(and according to IMDb, drama and thriller as well lol)

still i am really looking forward to this one.

oh and does anyone else feel like this is a mini-mini-reunion of people from jay and silent bob? (Ali Larter, Seann William Scott, Jason Lee, Kevin Smith)

Benicio del Toro was also in talks but unfortunately it seems he couldn't fit it into his schedule. But that would've been awesome.

And Kelly has said that this is only about HALF the cast. The cast right now in my opinion is fairly solid, but with another potential 6-7 slots the cast will probably be fantastic.

i'm also glad that kelly isn't making knowing his next film. i'd like to see him try something different (like this) which could show us whether he is a one hit wonder or a genuine genius. i think the latter is almost entirely certain (you can't exactly make a film like donnie darko on a stroke of luck) but you never know. this'll give us a chance to see his abilities in other genres. though he did cover several genres already in donnie darko.
