There was never going to be another film at the top spot other than SPIDER-MAN 2 this past weekend, but what was surpsiring was that the anticpated action sequel didn't manage to beat it's predeceesing debut total or beat the debuts of HARRY POTTER and SHREK 2. Tobey Maguire's slinging ways still managed a cool $7,132,602 over the weekend, and with its Wednesday opening it has totalled $8,735,015 (US $87,910,511), which isn't anything to scough at, but given the grad scale of the film and the fact the original managed over 10 Million alone on its opening weekend, it is seen as a disappointment. Not disappointing are the totals of aforementioned HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONSER OF AZKABAN and SHREK 2 which added a further $1,718,241 and $5,308,223 respectively to their totals which sit at very profitable $26,982,632 (US $271,557,288) for the wizard after 4 weeks, and $34,585,149 (US $348,070,168) for the Ogre crew after only 3 weeks. Lindsay Lohan only lost 30% of her audience in the second week for MEAN GIRLS, with the biting comedy earning $1,279,166, taking the films total to a very healthy $4,228,085 (US $42,552,086). Opening up against Spider-Man 2 wouldn't bode well for many films, esecially an Olsen twin vehicle, but the tweenies managed to award NEW YORK MINUTE a Top 5 placing with $607,782 (US $6,116,809). The chilly doco/thriller TOUCHING THE VOID rose 15% in takings this week, and one place, with a total so far of $826,981 (US $8,322,861), whilst fellow doco SUPER SIZE ME sat on the edge of the Top 10 with a 5 week total of $2,242,179 (US $22,565,628). There was a triple round of back to back debuts surfacing at #14, #15 and #16 this week, with the drama THE MOTHER coming out the best with $65,232 (US $656,504). The critically acclaimed Russian drama THE RETURN rallied up $64,136 (US $645,474) whilst the Philip Seymour Hoffman drama OWNING MAHONEY surfaced with $33,119 (US $333,314). Still holding out after 12 weeks, and remaining a Top 20 fixture longer than I would've predicted, is ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND which dipped 25% this week to a total of $3,406,004 (US $34,278,539).
THIS WEEK (July 8th): We have a visit with Dr. DeNiro; It's all in the execution for Chandler; and Robert Downey Jr investigates a musical mystery.
