Which DVDs have the best sound and video, and are good for showing off your system to your friends?

The Matrix
Twister
Saving Private Ryan
Master and Commander
Blackhawk Down
Attack of the Clones

All for their sound. My TV sucks ass, so picture is not an issue at this time.

I would say:

Kill Bill Volume I
Attack of the Clones
The Last Samurai
Pirates of the Carribean
(pretty much any war movie)
Any of the Matrix trilogy
LOTR (definitely! for A+V)

and Superbit stuff supposedly looks good too.

If I had to choose only one ATM, it would be return of the king.

Music:
Saving Private Ryan
Black Hawk Down
... and perhaps Blade II (with the soundtrack-only selected)

Video:
Any LOTR (theatrical or EE) part
Shrek
Monsters Inc.
Final Fantasy
(these three last movies are easy to choose because they are animation movies. And that's the best thing to show off your home theater.)

Since we are talking about animated films, which I forgot to include, slap Finding Nemo onto that list.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It blew my mind the first time I watched in surround sound.

Perhaps not for video because of its overall blue-hue, but everytime I'm showing off my home theater system, i pop in Minority Report. Especially that first 5 minutes of the film when the Precogs start having visions of the "apparant" first murder. What a trip!

I've only got a TV now, but my parents have a great setup so I always bring movies home when I go back for xmas or whatever.

I'd definitely have to go with the T2 Extreme Edition, that was just insane.

I really want to bring Open Range home this year because the sound during the gunfight in theatres was just phenomenal.

So let me get this straight, even though I don't like more than 1/3 of those movies listed, I still must own them? Why? because of your opinion?

 You're right, I was an ass, but I don't agree with the fact that if a DVD has great extras it's a must have. I am 30 years old, and I like todays movies because they are more realistic and not over acted. Don't get me wrong, nobody can play Scrooge like Alastair Sim. A Patch Of Blue is a great film. But I just can't get into the old flicks because of the over acting.

It's just me, but I look at the ages of the members of this board, and can't understand why you "children" like these old, boring movies. Help me out.

I'm 22, and I can't stand old generation films.

I like SOME old films, like 12 angry men, but I find so many of them more boring than watching paint dry.

I've never understood the appeal of Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck or films from the 50's.

Some people consider Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Strangelove, and Casablanca among the greatest films ever, but I think they are horrible films. I find them so dull and boring.

It's ironic because those same people despise hollywood today, saying they've lost something. To each his own I guess.

I'm also 30. I really was never a fan of older movies before I started coming to JoBlo. The Schmoes on this board convinced me to give them a try. I got to tell you, I was hooked from the start. Over acting? Sure. That's one of the reasons to like it. They are not for everyone, that's for sure. I have a buddy that will not watch ANY black and white movies. That includes Clerks! That kills me because he loves Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back!
