So tonight I went downtown Toronto to the lovely Paramount theatre, and caught an advance screening of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.
What'd I think? Well, despite popular demand, I was not stoned for this picture. That might have lowered my appreciation for the humor. However, I still got a few laughs out, but I didn't wet my pants over any of it.
The acting wasn't spectacular at all. Too often, John Cho seemed to have to force his lines out. The characters were all just there for the sake of it, without any real dimensions. You got the obnoxious, Indian party-guy (Kal Penn), and the work-is-my-life, I'm-a-big-wuss Chinese guy (John Cho). That, sadly sums up both the characters. Others in the film are equally as disappointing. Other than that, you don't learn much more about them. It doesn't even pursue sidestories, most of which just seem to be brought in for the ability to squeeze in a cameo. Some of the cool characters who appear to have some relevance that you are introduced serve no purpose at all, and the movie starts feeling like a bad TV show that recruited half-assed characters to boost ratings.
How was the humor? It was mediocre, at best, retelling all the same jokes we've heard in other teen comedies. They at least had me laughing throughout it, but nothing too hard over any of it all. Rehashing jokes gets very tiring.
This flick was the same as any other teen movie. It, at least, beat out American Wedding in the lines of humor, and would be even more funny if one was inebriated. But is it a good movie? I'll have to say, no, it really isn't. It's a stupid, mindless flick that doesn't take any attention span to sit through, with crude humor and pot jokes in the mix. The director's last potculture smash, "Dude, Where's My Car?", was far better.
I'd wait for it on VHS or DVD. Otherwise, you may feel like your money was stolen from you coming out of the theater.

The movie is going to completely rock for me. It is going to remind me of all the times I've gotten real high, real hungry, and real uh...*thinks of another 'H' word* Horny? Yeah, that'll fit.

I think Harold and Kumar will no doubt become a cult classic in a couple of years, but for now I will enjoy for what it might be for me: an EPIC comedy beyond the borders of the GREAT Dude Where's My Car?.
