Shit, I don't have to wait in line!!!!! Being a Film Critic for your City News paper has it's advantages, Like this one, I get to see it this Thursday and I can't wait, Like I've I said before the movie has My Favorite Director (Soderberg) Directing it, and it also stars two of my three favorite young actor's, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, so why would it suck???? It's impossible for this movie to suck, well to me anyway.....

bob
12-03-2001, 04:41 PM
Hell Yeah i'll be in line! This is the #1 movie i'm looking forward to this year. It's got a great director(Soderbergh), great stars like Clooney and Damon(he looks awesome in The Bourne Identity, too), and it has a good plot and trailer. One criticism that is pretty weak is that it is more interested in being hip and cool than entertaining. DID ANYBODY SEE THE ORIGINAL?? They just sit on their asses for an hour and a half, then make a five minute heist! And it worked fine! This film will easily one up the original.

IMHO, it's probably better to go into a movie with, at most, just middle of the road expectations.

Just a word of advice.

Mike Joblo, gave Battlefield Earth a 7/10 when it was one of the worst films ever made............don't be discouraged cuz Jo was disappointed, all kinds of other critics are praising it........no critic's bad/disappointing review can stop me from seeing a movie I want to see!!

Mike
12-05-2001, 12:21 PM
Yeah, but I haven't seen Battlefield Earth so I don't know if I would have liked it or not, probably not but I don't know for sure. One of my friends said it was really good and I should see it and another one of my friends said it was horrible and really boring. Maybe someday I'll see it if it's on TV but otherwise I don't plan on wasting money on it. So I'm not sure if it's good or not. Anyway, most of the time I do agree with Joblo's reviews so when he gives a movie a so-so grade that I want to see it's a little discouraging. I'm actually considering staying home Friday night and just renting a movie instead. But if I do go to the movies there's two movies I plan on checking out, Oceans Eleven and Behind Enemy Lines. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet though.

I am so happy because tommorow at this time I will be sitting in a Special Showing of Ocean's Eleven just for Critic's. I have been antisapating this movie since it was first announsed That Steven Soderbergh was directing and my favorite actor was starring (Brad Pitt).. Like I have said before I am one of the 5 different critic's for my City newspaper, you see each week the editor of the paper asigns us different movie's to watch and review, and this week my editor chose ME to review Ocean's Eleven, Oh My God I am so excited and pumped to see this movie, it's going to be GREAT, I can't wait!! I hope it's good, I have such high hopes for this movie that i'll probaly go into a world of Depression if it Suck's http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.. I'm serious! I will.... I know it's going to be great though, so I have nothing to worry about.

I think I'll be seeing one movie Friday night and I'm going with a buddy of mine, he wants to see Behind Enemy Lines and Oceans Eleven but he wants to see Behind Enemy Lines more but I'll see if I can get him to see Oceans Eleven, that's the one I want to see more.

That's all I usually ask of readers of the site...to look at my OVERALL package of reviews (which is over 700 or so by now) and determine their tastes according to the general consensus they have with them all (as opposed to picking one review that they completely disagreed on, and using that as an example to illustate their point..) http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Or at least, to compare my grades of other similar films in the WHERE'S JOBLO COMING FROM section directly under my review. I think it gives you a good barometer of how I saw other films of its type, and a more relative idea of what I thought of the flick in question...

It's a very good movie Mike, but let me tell you one thing though, If you go into Ocean's Eleven expecting to see another Steven Soderbergh Masterpiece, you'll be disappointed, but if you go into it expecting to see a very entertaining film and nothing more you'll like it....

The One thing I kept in mind before seeing it is, this is not Soderbergh trying to get another Oscar, it is soderbergh trying to make a good and entertaining popcorn movie, and let me tell you that he has succeded in every possible way........

I saw it today and I liked it. Not a great movie by any means but it did entertain me for 2 hours. All the actors were just going through the motions but it was still fun to watch.

The main problem I had with the flick (besides Julia) was the robbery of the casinos. It was ridiculously unbelievable. Shit....trips to the moon don't even require this kind of split second timing. But because of the light-weight tone of the movie that wasn't too hard to overlook.

I'd give it a 7/10.

2001 has brought us two perfect films, Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone and now Oceans 11. I rarely give 10/10's let alone give two in a year, and the year isn't even over yet!

Oceans 11 is perfect in so many ways(I will not bore you about the plot as you already know it). The setup of the film is great, it's very fast-paced and wonderfully constructed. The screenplay was extremely witty, I loved the banter between Danny (George Clooney) and Tess (Julia Roberts). The look of the film is cool, it's modern yet you feel like you are in the 60's.

Steven Soderberg's direction is topnotch. This man is a genius. He turned what could have been a generic heist flick into a very cool, classy and suave film.

The acting is exceptional. George Clooney remains a force to be reckoned with as Danny Ocean. He delivers his lines with such charisma and grace, he is a fine actor. Brad Pitt, the most consistent actor in Hollywood, yet again gives another great and very funny performance. Andy Garcia was great he is truly and underrated actor. Julia Roberts in her small yet pivotal role was great, her and George Clooney had such great chemistry together. Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Scott Caan and Casey Affleck were great as well.

The two best performances in the film however were by two acting greats. Elliott Gouldwas at his greatest as the backer of the heist. His cigar smoking, cheesy clothes wearing rich man was fantastic.
My favorite however was Carl Reiner as Sol. He was hilarious, it was nice to see such an influential older actor act alongside these young guns!!!!

A truly great scene is near the first in which Brad Pitt's character Rusty, is giving card lessons to a bunch of young actors playing theirselves. Traffic and That 70's Show star Topher Grace, Charmed's Holly Marie Combs, 7th Heavens Barry Watson, Dawsons Creeker Joshua Jackson and Once And Again star Shane West. It was a hilarious scene!

Oceans 11 is a perfect old-fashioned heist film. Everything about it was great.

If it weren't for Harry Potter, although both get 10/10's, Oceans 11 would be my favorite film of the year, but Harry beats it just by an inch.

Warner Bros. should be smiling, they have made two back to back great popcorn films that are perfect. They seem to be the only studio in Hollywood trying to make great entertainmnet. Such so -called "serious" films like Pearl Harbor and Hannibal failed miserably in the quality department.

Oceans 11 is a great film, one of the best films ever made in my opinion. Steven Soderberg is on a roll, in the last 2 years he has made 3 of the best five films released in my opinion, quite a feat!!!! He is the best director out there.

See it, love it......"are you in or are you out?????"

10/10

***look closely at the boxing match scene and in the crowd you will see Angie Dickinson, she played Julia Roberts character in the original

*** also in the end credits, Soderberg had included a little joke...."and introducing Julia Roberts as Tess.....LOL

OCEAN'S ELEVEN is so cool it doesn't count sheep. Neither do sheep count it. It just doesn't count at all. It's so weightless and inconsequential that you forget about it as soon as the end credits start rolling. Most of the publicity talks revolve around how much fun the all-star cast had while making it. Well, it shows. The script seemed designed to require as little effort as possible from a perpetually hungover crew. It is no surprise then that much of the energy is supplied by the more responsible, older members of the cast. Elliott Gould and Carl Reiner give the most energetic performances, and are the most fun to watch. As for the rest of the movie, the real action seems to be happening just outside the camera frame. SEXY BEAST had Ben Kingsley's scary turn. THE SCORE had the heist and the real stars. HEIST had the dialogue. OCEAN'S ELEVEN had me looking at my watch.

"Ocean's Eleven"-A+
(#5 on Brian's Fall 2001 Top 10 "Must-See" List)
The answer is story, character, and style. The question is, why is "Ocean's
Eleven" the best- and coolest- popcorn flick of this disappointing year?
The story is simple- Danny Ocean (a charismatic and ultra-cool George Clooney),
fresh from a stint in jail, recruits 10 criminal buds- including Brad Pitt,
Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Scott Caan, Casey Affleck, Elliot Gould,
Carl Reiner, Edward Jemison, and Shaobo Qin- to knock over three casinos
owned by the Vegas tycoon (Andy Garcia) who stole Danny's wife (Julia Roberts;
is this a cast or what?). It's a remake- more or less- of the Rat Pack film
of the same name, but it has a fresh feel that can only mean one man behind
the helm- Steven Soderbergh. The "Traffic" Oscar winner- responsible for
two previous "cooler than school" thrillers, "Out of Sight" and "The Limey,"
and working from a terrific screenplay by Ted Griffin- puts the same skill
and talent that earned him two Oscar nominations last year (the second was
for "Erin Brockovich") behind this film, and boy does that energy pay off
for the audience. It's brisk pace puts this year's previous heist pictures-
ranging from the entertaining "The Score" to David Mamet's "Heist," to the
overrated "Sexy Beast" to the wretched "3000 Miles to Graceland"- to shame,
and it's mega-wattage star cast is excellently at ease and having the time
of their lives. Be it old pros like Gould and Reiner (a special treat),
life-long supporting talents like Cheadle (three for three w/ Soderbergh)
and Garcia, or bona-fide movie stars like Pitt (who hasn't been this good-
or fun- since "Fight Club"), Roberts (in a small, but smartly played, glorified
cameo; check out the joke in the credits), and Clooney, there isn't a single
slacker in the group (special props to Bernie Mac, especially fun in his
major scenes). Vegas has never looked better onscreen (Soderbergh shot the
film as well), and the David Holmes score is great fun. Ditto the movie
itself.

I can tell that you didnt' read the Harry Potter books because the first film is just basically a setup for the next 6 installments, which any Harry Potter fan knows!!! Out of curiosity, did anyone else catch the original "Ocean's Eleven" last night on Turner Classic? If so, what did you think compared to Soderbergh's film? I found the original to drag terribly, and the "coolness" of the film just doesn't age that well; I did like the story, though. Overall, I'd give it a B-.

It was Great!!!
Very very very funny and incredibly intertaining. All of the acting was good especially by Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, and hell everybody else was great, except Julia Roberts.
I liked the way the film was told with lots of jumps and flashbacks that show stuff we didnt see the first time.
It will defintly be a golden globe contender and with this years competition possibly oscar contender.
10/10
one of the best 5 films of the year.

FreakArtist

I think it was pretty funny. Well directed with a great cast. A bit kind of like Out of Sight. The screenplay wasn't great but it's a good script for that kind of movies. It's entertaining. The heist at the end was really cool.
8/10
But I'm sorry HBO, Ocean's Eleven will definitely not be an Oscar contender.
If you say so it's 'cause you still have to learn a bit about movies.

I didnt catch it but did you catch the cameo of JFK?? Susposedly there a shot of the back of his head in the original! It's a long running hollywood rumor/urban legend, but people who were around the rat pack say they did stuff like that all the time. And if you've heard about how much JFK hung out with Frank then it possibly a true story!

I think it's a lost cause max. Oh, and I think I realized why O's 11 is so fresh in his mind. He saw it 5 times last weekend. How can you lecture someone about how it is wrong that they forgot parts of the movie when you've had the privilege of seeing the movie multiple times? Of course he can't stop thinking about it, he can't stop seeing it.

I saw Ocean's 11 last night with a couple friends and had a blast. It's not Ocsar-worthy or a great movie or anything, it's just a fun time for everyone. It has action, humor, and drama. And the best thing is that just about anyone from about age 12 and up should enjoy this film. George Clooney is the man, so is Brad Pitt. Another job well done by Steven Soderbergh! 8/10

I thought Ocean's Eleven was great. I doubt it'll be nominated for Oscars, but I'll bet it gets nominated for the comedy Golden Globe. I hope it wins.

I gave it a 9/10. It's one of the more fun (or is it funner?) movies I've seen in a while.
