View Full Version : Shut Up About Movie Prices

I'm sick of hearing everyone constantly say "ugh, that movie isn't worth my 20 dollars!" 20 dollars for a movie? Since when!? Now, I realize if you buy a ticket at 8 PM, a large popcorn and pop, that you're nearing that magic number, but here's a recipe: don't go when tickets are 9 dollars! Every theater has a matinee, some even have them for VERY cheap (a local theater here has 3.50 movies from 4-6 PM) and don't buy the fucking popcorn and pop. Eat before you go and quit complaining! Assuming you're only paying for yourself, it's easy to see a movie for five bucks or less. Yeah, it's not at 7 at nite, but that's like saying "Ugh, I can never find a seat when I show up 5 minutes before the movie on opening nite!" You just solved your own problem. See it early, don't buy the extra stuff, and quite bitching.

Well, lets see. If you are sick of hearing people complain about prices then either tune them out, do not go to threads on this message board that might have people doing that and if you know of someone on here that does that you can use your ignore option.;)

me complain? NEVAH!

- Hit the theaters for MATINEES, YES MATINEES. Nothing beats $7-8 versus $10+ (eeek!)

- For food and snack consumption SNEAK THEM IN! Unless the ticket taker resembles airport security SNEAK EM IN!

- If food must be consumed at the theater large POPCORN is always a best bet to go with.... If you are hungry you can ALWAYS go back and get the second free refill.

In my opinion I think they should be higher...much higher.

I want to see people like Micheal Bay and Julie Roberts even more rich. Hey they deserve it

The price in my town is $9.50 canadian (about $7.25 U.S) and it's a shitty theater that hardly gets anything good. Positive part is there are no ads before the movies, just the movie previews.

It must suck living in a big city and having to pay those bullshit prices.

I've got 2 dollar matinees. I want to go to the drive-in sometime this summer where it's 5 bucks a person, 1 dollar for those under twelve, and you get to watch a double feature.

Sound advice...kind of negates the whole point of having a RANT movie board, doesn't it? But thanks for the tip nonetheless...

I know a lot of us do have time to go to the matinee during the week, but some of us poor shits don't. The movie prices are ridiculous in most areas. I and most of who I know pick and choose which movie might be worth blowing money on this week.

I'm sick of hearing everyone constantly say "ugh, that movie isn't worth my 20 dollars!"

Some movies aren't worth a DVD price to see once.

Hooray for piracy! ;)

I have every right to complain. I'm so sick of movies having unnecessary budgets when they just don't need them. Look at Bad Boys 2 - $130 million dollars to make a fucking COP movie?!? That is just insane and it's crap like that that is making it more expensive for theatres to buy movies, which in turn has the theatres having to cover their costs by overcharging for snacks and tickets. If the movie companies would crack down and stop movies from overusing CGI Effects and stop paying actors such ridiculous salaries, then maybe it could be a lot cheaper to go a movie when it isn't cheap night (which isn't all that cheap either).

Not quite. The reason popcorn and pop cost so much is because the exhibitor needs to compensate for the expenses of running a new, state-of-the-art theater. They make minimal profit the first week of release (as they always have, so it has nothing to do with movies costing more), and hope the film has legs, because their profit exponentially will rise. So it's not because Bad Boys 2 cost 130 million dollars and they thus charged a theater more to play it, it's because Bad Boys 2 sucked and had a huge drop-off after it's first weekend, which turns little profit for a theater. And Bad Boys 2, albeit, a "cop" movie, wasn't quite Narc. Despite it's flaws, without the expensive action sequences and marquee names (which all cost money) few would have seen it.

Depending on the quality/length of a movie I can see why people find ticket prices expensive, but I agree that you can easily find ways to make it cheaper. Not buying any food in particular helps (which is what I almost always do).

Though luckily for me it's usually only $6 for an evening show (depending on the theater I go to) so I'm not complaining too often.

Drive-In's are the fucking BOMB! It's 3 bucks a person here. Plus the food ain't too shabby either. Not just your run of the mill nachos and popcorn. Cheeseburgers, fries, milk-shakes. DAMN. I can't wait to go back home this fall. :D

Drive-In's need to come back in style. For real.

...but then again the prices wouldn't be so great. Nevermind.

Yeah, I've been to one of those up around the Tiffin area here in Ohio. S'nice.

Drive Ins need to come back HARDCORE, but places like Ohio can only run them seasonally. That sucks.

I've never been to a drivein, which makes me sad. I think it is a great idea for all parties involved. Do they still use the speaker boxes all the time, or have there been advancements? I always assumed they would eventually use radio transmission..

Anyone know any driveins in the Saint Louis area?

Bingo. That's precisely what they use around here. I don't think too many use speaker boxes anymore.

Why are you spending $20 on a movie? I've never seen a theatre that cost more than $10.

I am rich, but that's beside the point...The point is, a matinee, from 4-6 any day of the week costs between 3-6 dollars per ticket. Even the most expensive nite showing is, at most, 9-10 dollars. If someone buys popcorn, pop, some candy and a ticket, then yes, it's going to cost them 20 dollars plus. But the point is, it doesn't have to. People whine and complain that "I'd never spend my 20 dollars on (insert movie)." Well, it's your own fault if you spend that much money at a theater. People know what to expect and if they chose to make uninformed decisions then that's their own fault.

1. Highest rated [i]Icelandic[I]..Not the highest rated in the whole damn country!

2. It's still a chunky amount of money to spend on one single movie..Especially if it sucks *coughKingArthurcough*

Personally, I think movie ticket prices are too high. But I do try and go to matinee showings whenever possible, since it really does cut the costs in about half. I live in NY, so many movie theaters are $10 a ticket, and there are no dollar theaters or drive-ins anywhere near my area. I would die of happiness if a dollar theater opened near me, but not everyone has that luxury.

I'll complain all I want thanks. Evening shows are often the only times I can get to movies, and yes, the prices are high. Hell, even matinees are getting expensive. By saying "Shut up about movie prices", you're coming off as very condescending. Let the people bitch, they do have a valid point.

"I am rich, but that's beside the point..."

that quote right there just deflates your whole argument. Glad you are 'rich' though.

I'm 19, I'm not rich and was being facetious. And yeah, you do have the right to bitch, just as I have the same right to do so, and exercised that. And sure, movies are more expensive than they were 20 years ago and it may very well cost someone 7-10 dollars to see a movie at the peak time of the evening. However, I'm not complaining about that. I'm complaining about the people that say "It's 20-30 dollars for me to see a movie! I can buy the DVD for that!" It's not that much. If you buy expensive popcorn and pop and inflate the price that's your own fault. You can exercise some restraint in order to keep things well within a budget.

The thing is though a lot of DVD's are about 10 bucks after a month or two (depending on the movie) so you COULD buy the DVD with the money you are paying to see it at theaters...besides theres always amazon.
