View Full Version : What the fuck is happening with MTV!?

Well, I don't know if this rant is legit in the US but, it might.
Sky is my cable server and it does have a nice selection. So, today, I tune up my TV and head directly to the movie channels. Seeing as how there was nothin on, I turned down to the national TV channels which now and then have some interesting entertainment. Nope, nothin. So I remember those days where I spent hours tuned on MTV, on my computer and with quality entertainment playing in front of me. I go "Why haven't I tuned in MTV for so long??" so I presss the right buttons and tune MTV. What was on? "Nick and Jessice", since I can't stomach that fucking annoyng show, I hope something better will appear. I put on the guide. Here's what would follow:
-Nick And Jessica (yes, more)
-Dave and Carmen.
-Dave and Carmen.
-The fucking Real World.
-Dirty Sanchez (show I can't stand)
-Viva La Bam (show that has about three episodes of which I've seen all).
-WildBoyz reruns.
-I didn't check what followed.
I turn the TV off and go "Fuck, NOW I remember why I stopped watching MTV!".
Is anyone else sick of how little actual MUSIC they show in this new cheap MTV!? Fuck, I'm sick of these stupid shows! Jackass was excellent but THAT'S IT!! NOTHING MORE FOR ME PLEASE!!

Well I do welcome SOME of the shows like the Extreme Road Rules but I do agree what da fuk with these shitty look alike shows they keep cranking out?!?!?
I am spending MORE time over at VH-1 now than at MTV.....
As for the lack of music that they made themselves famous many eons ago.... I pretty much gotten used to the music videos being shown via TRL cause by 1 am I am already sleepin or hanging out here at JoBlo.

I tuned out long ago, and have no interest in going back to that shit.
I tried to watch it with a few girlfriends, and it got me zoned out. They never played videos, and when they did...it'd be either a 30 second clip, or they would cut the song out about a minute before its prime so I could see a bunch of fuckin retards go apeshit over Carson Daly in Times Square.
Then when the video is playing, and before it gets cut off, I get a montage of goofy shit flying at the bottom of the screen like the Nasdaq stock market is about to crash.
Nonetheless, by the song's first chorus, some fuckin idiot wrapped in a moron will come across the screen and say into a microphone that he wants to listen to the song that is currently playing. Well dickhead, if you'd shut the fuck up, everyone could hear it. I hope when you see your pimply face interrupting the video we've all been waiting for, that you'll jump out of the times square window with Carson Daly and fucking die.
I hate MTV.

Have to say Dirty Sanchez is the worst tv show EVER, I was actually quite disappointed at the uk tv station channel 4 for showing it.

VH1 is pretty shit nowadays too, at least over here. The only things them seem to show are 'The fabulous life of Paris Hilton/Brad Pitt/David Beckham/Arnie' and 'Top 10 worst outfits at an award show' or similar nonsense.

I'm not an avid VH1 watcher, but they did make I Love the 70's-90's, a show I love, so I give them a pass. I made peace with the fact that Music Television is an oxymoron, but what I never made peace with was the immense amount of crappy shows they air

The only show i really watch on MTV is the Real World shit and MTV only shows half the shit that happens on the show so we only get one side to these people who decide to share their lives on tv only to be wrongly portrayed because of lowsy editing. GOOD JOB MTV.

yeah VH1s new trend is to get a bunch of comedians in a room and talk about whats new in the world/what happened in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I mean its cool for like a week but then it gets really lame, VH1 doesnt even play music anymore.

Words cant describe how I hate MTV but I will try.
Its not even their subject matter that pisses me off as much.
ITS THE FUCKING VJs!!!!
For example, Gideon Yago. God, I if wanted to listen to some emo fuckstick lecture me on current events and issues then I would go to a Dashboard Confessionals concert.
Then there is John Norris:rolleyes:
Dude, give it up already. You are a 42 year old douche bag and when you are reporting about G-Unit, everyone is laughing at your bitch ass.
Then there is that token asian chick...Susan Pow or Chow or something. Could you suck up to the celebrities anymore?

Ahhh MTV. I was lucky enough to be there when this channell first was launched. My sister and I were sitting in front of the tv watching the rainbow bars waiting for it to start and it did. It was so cool but at it's start they only had 13 videos to run until more were made, they just played the same ones over and over but the DJ's made up for it. I remember being so sick of that "Too Much Time On My Hands" video by STYX. Once the rest of the world caught up my sister and I would watch this channel for hours and it was so much fun and the videos so entertaining. Then it started with Remote Control and then Dial MTV and before you know it they had news and then ta da The Real World and it went down hill from there (NO it was not Adam Curry's Fault :D )
Slowly but surely less videos were seen, it really pissed me off when they would only show half the video and then get cut off at the end. It has been a long time since I watched MTV and I miss the way it used to be. Sure I like reality tv shows but there are too many now and It scares me to think that the world has such a short attention span, that it would get bored with just videos but, that is the way it seems to be.

I've bitched for years about why MTV still calls itself MTV when all they show is crappy reality shows and dumb comedy shows. Remember Headbanger's Ball? MTV news specials on actual music? I even miss Yo! MTV Raps.
VH1 yeah, they should tone down on a lot of their non-music shows (especially the countdowns)! but I love the "I Love 70s/80s" shows (the 90s one was a bomb) and Best Week Ever, because of how they make fun of the people we like to crack on too. One of their best new shows is Bands Reunited, which should be airing some new eps soon. The last ones were pretty interesting.

Yeah I would take the pepsi challenge with VH1, over MTV any 'ole day of the fucking week.
I believe I pretty much tuned out of MTV when one of their greatest shows, "Beavis & Butthead" ran it's course.
Although MTV did have some good shows in their program schedule at one time, their choice of shows now, truly suck huge donkey balls.

Yes, I too remember when MTV first started. I watched that station constantly. Then at some point, they decided to incorporate shows that were just down-right horrible, and the music stopped.
VH-1 shows up (who are I believe owned by MTV as well), and I watched it instead. MTV finds out that there are viewers watching VH-1 and decide to polute it with shit too. Granted, I do love the I love the 70's, 80's, and 90's program and Surreal Life (season 2), but everything else is crap.

Truer words were never spoken: Nothing has done more damage to the whole entire Entertainment Industry than the fecund atrocity known as MTV; they hardly play music at all anymore, and the stuff they do is just boring, generic rap!
Once Celebrity DeathMatch got cancelled, I no longer had any reason to watch MTV; that show was fucking EXCELLENT.

Here are my personal reasons for avoiding MTV:
THE PLACE IS ONE, BIG, MOTHERFUCKING ADVERTISEMENT THAT TELLS DUMBASS, GULLIBLE YOUNG PEOPLE WHAT'S COOL AND HOW YOUR SUPPOSED TO ACT. I know when I was in middle school and Tom Green came out, all of my friend's IQ's dropped 40 points, and this is coming from a sumbitch who actually laughs at the ole' Canuck. And of course, as it's become cliched to say, Britney Spears has turned a good portion of sixth grade girls into scantily clad bimbos who think it's hip to be hoes.
THE PLACE HAS NO MUSIC! And when they do, it's on at 2am, and it's either emo trash, whiny pop, shitty rap, or, occasionally, a good song or two, but it's only after I've seen that Hoobastank song 450 times.
THEIR SHOWS ARE ALL DERIATIVE. You can only do the same variation on the same dating shows, twentysomething rejects doing dumb things, and married celbrities amuck.
These are my reasons for despising MTV.

This is news? MTV has been shit for 15 years.
The whole "Where's the music part" joke has become so worn out that it now aplies to VH1 and MTV2 as well.
I don't know anyone who likes MTV, yet it remains popular. Of course, I don't hang out with 12 year olds either.
I do remember when MTV first came on. I remember all the horrid videos of the 80's. I remember Headbanger's Ball and how it launched bands like Nirvava and Pearl Jam, even though they didn't want to be labeled "metal."

I don't consider MTV to stand for Music Television anymore - hasn't for a while. More like Mainstream Television or something stupid like that. They only air like 2 hours of music a day and only like 80% of a video on TRL. It's pathetic.

You said "What the fuck is happening " That would be present tense. As in now.
There's this great parody of MTV on Fuse (the other music chanel that actually plays music) that rips on that Jessica Simpson show.
It's her in the kitchen smashing a banana with a rolling pin. The guy comes in and she says "Look honey, I made home made fruit roll ups."
He says, bewildered "That's great honey, but we could go to the store to get those."
She says "But they cost so much!"
Then in big bold letters: This crap replaced music videos?

Well I'll be the first to say that I like MTV more now. The only reason is because they only pretty much play pop and rock and i'm into rap so it makes me no difference. I actually like their shows nowadays...Punk'd, Viva La Bam, Those dating shows are funny sometimes, Roomraiders, Boiling Points, Wildboyz, The assistant, Real World, Road Rules and so on. And for music I watch BET...

That Andy Dick show takes the cake! Does anyone even watch that show? ITs horrible.
I stopped watching MTV a long time ago Except if I see Beavis 'n Butthead while flipping through channels...okay, and that time they did a tribute to Kurt Cobain. But that's it, I swear!
Anywho, the reason why I stopped watching is because of what their CEO said. I don't know the exact quote, but he pretty much bragged about how MTV "owns America's youth."

I think it started in the 80s with REMOTE CONTROL -- but it was still cool back then. They had the daily count down -- that was actually compiled by callers requests and showed cool videos.
But I think the downfall started when they began doing MTVs Spring Break Weekend -- they had always covered Spring Breaks, but sometime in the early 90s they began showing it all day, all summer, and in repeats.
I think this is when they realized that sex can be sold with little investment. No longer did they need Madonna, they could just bring a camera to the beach, but on demeaning contests, and let the numbers fly. This is what started their fascination with reality TV, or as I call it: amateur TV.
Then came The Real World, and the rest is history down the flusher.
One thing I still like - Reruns of Beavis and Butthead (even though I know it's to promote the DVDs)

Nah, I gotta disagree there. I thought it kept cool through the 80s. 6 months is a bit harsh. I always think of the MTV glory days being at times like the Money for Nothing video, David Lee Roth - stuff like that. Mid-80s, Miami Vice days.
I thought of another downfall for the station though --
What about when music video stopped being about the music, and about the directors desire to make a friggin' art film. Yes, I am refering specifically to Losing My Religion.
Back in what I see as the glory days, Scorcese was directing videos, and you didn't even know about it.
Remember when George Michael popped from behind the camera at the end of the video HE directed.
Take MTV away from the filmmakers, and focus on the musicians, and their music, not some masturbatory film geek and his greasy lens! No disrepect to the music video directors, but when did it become more about them?

An episode of Wild Boys summed up MTV quite nicely . One of those poor man's Jeff Corbin dudes actually ate Yak dung , guess he thought it was hip and cool .
That's what it has come down to , eating excrement scraped off of a wild animal's ass .
It's funny how MTV thinks they are hip , but they're nothing more than a bunch of pandering dunces without a clue about real entertainment , all they try to do now is shock , but only end up annoying .

Parilese, you put together a nice slice of thoughts that triggered a bunch of great memories for me (thanks). Are we that old? I too was there, August 1, watching the rainbow bars. I was so sad when JJ Jackson died, even sadder when I realized that Mtv's current punkass demographic doesn't even know who he was.
Anyway, as an homage to the great channel that used to be Mtv, here are the vids I remember seeing the most way back then:
1. The Vapors, Turning Japanese
2. Huey Lewis/News, Sooner or Later
3. Split Enz, One Step Ahead
4. Bow Wow Wow, I Want Candy
5. The Waitresses, I Know What Boys Like
6. Stray Cats, Stray Cat Strut
7. Madness, One Step Beyond
8. Robert Palmer, Looking For Clues
9. Pretenders, Brass In Pocket
10. David Bowie, Ashes to Ashes
11. Buggles, Video Killed the Radio Star
12. Squeeze, Tempted
God, those were the days. When the M in Mtv stood for Music, not Moronic.
What vids do the rest of you old fogie schmoes remember?

Since I live in Europe I get MTV Europe and while I like the fact that there is still a lot of music to watch and to listen to, I hate US non-music show.
Such as something that is called I think Made.
I say I think because when I surf the channel and I see it, I don't watch it enough to be sure (VEG).
I know that "follow your dream" is important, but when I see a girl who barely reaches 5" and with a weight close to 100 KG who wants to be a football player, I think she's a fool.
Together with another one who was wider than she was tall and wanted to be a cheerleader.
When I was a child I wanted to be a ballett dancer, but when I was 8 and already too tall for it, I went for another career.
Or "The Osbourne".
The funny thing is that when they broadcast the original version with subtitles, the swearing is "beeped" while the subtitles aren't and the dubbed version they broadcast too has all the swearing in, without "beep".
And we get to see everything that is banned in the USA or the UK.
Such as some videos.
I watched sometimes the Awards but I prefer European Award expecially because they usually don't call (apart from that thing called Ali J) people to present who spend their time insulting the guests.
US guests are very level-headed because I would never accept to be insulted on stage by some fool who happens to present a show.
And another thing they do here in Italy is to warn people not to use drugs without patronizing them, but showing the damages and bringing witnesses.
There's also a "sex show", i.e. a show where they talk seriously about sex and passion, without being shy or condemning people.
It's nice.
