View Full Version : SEQUEL...not sequal

Short, but sweet: Stop saying sequal, it's sequel. And stop saying 'your' when you mean 'you're.' your is possessive, which is why something like "i think your stupid when you use the wrong version" is not proper english.

I understand, but this forum is supposed to be about rants involving movies, hollywood, actors, etc. and not to bitch about fellow schmoes.

Keep in mind that this is the internet, and only the internet. Only three of my nearly 3,000 posts as a schmoe ever ended up as a college thesis paper.

Yeah, well, I can't stand when it's written "colour".

Isn't it "Suckall" or is it "Sequel" because alot of movies that are "Sequels" are really "Suckalls" as in they Suck all the money out of your pockets and have you leaving the theater with a victimized/violated feeling.

"Yeah, well, I can't stand when it's written "colour"."

Umm, that's the way we spell that word here in Britain. It's not exactly the same as someone spelling a word *wrong*.

I realize that's how Brits spell it, but I can't stand it, so I said something. And I realize it's not the same as someone misspelling a word, but I figured I'd get my word out. Dig it?

Since you're being a grammar nazi, let me ask you this...

Ever hear of capitalization?

There are 3 words you should have capitalized, and didn't.

Your

I

English

There is no such thing as proper English.

Our great-great-great-Grandchildren will be most likely speaking a new innovative version of the language.

Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare could probably vouch for me if they were alive.

People write the way the speak and hear words.

When they discuss movies, they hear "seQUAL", which is a part of their native dialect, and nobody's dialect is wrong.

So if I hear the word island pronounced 'eye-land' it's proper spelling? No. And capitalization is more a matter of my laziness than not knowing the proper rules of grammar, but good dig anyway. It just bothers me that such basic rules of grammar escape so many people, at times myself included. But points well taken, I'm sorry for posting and clever posts like Optimus' (very original...) have shown me the error of my ways.

Does someone need a hug???;)

I'm just joshing with ya. One thing that irrates me is when someone doesn't use punctuation marks, and the run-on sentences begin. No one has heard of a period??

Anyhow, don't take anyone seriously in these forums (unless you have access to the politics forum, whew!!), it's all good fun..

I say do not tell me what to fucking do and if my errors bother you, you can bypass all my posts or you can just ignore me.:D

No, sorry for the confusion.

Its just that when I say it is one's own dialect and not ignorance which causes the spelling errors, people will respond that "they need to fix their dialect or whatever." and that's a wrong, facist answer.

We run amuck with the cultures of the world, and if you've never seen island spelled (or in some dialects, "spelt"), you may be prone to spell it eyeland.

And who's to say that in 250 years from now, we won't say that the silent "s" is bullshit, and its time to spell it like it sounds? It took about that long for people to stop saying "night" as "knight" (with the voiced velar "k" sound)

*Sigh.* I shall utilize the BOLD utility for the purposes of emphasis and clarity in responding.

Short, as used in the paragraph above, needs to be lower case. The colon is setting up what, we hope, will be a significant phrase. What follows is not an independent sentence.

And, as it is used in the second sentence, is incorrect. While it is true that the MLA at one time prohibited the use of prepositions to begin a sentence, it no longer does so. The current rule, however, indicates that the preposition should be used to continue an incomplete thought most fluidly introduced in a new sentence. This is not the case here.

The use of "'," or the single quotation, is incorrect. One should place standard quotation marks around words, letters, or symbols that are being discussed. (It is also appropriate to use underlining and, in some publications, italics. If you live in the United Kingdom there are extenuating governances.)

The "i" should be upper case. Proper nouns are distinguished thusly.

I believe there is a saying about people in glass houses. The second half of the expression escapes me. :D

This was fun!

Good lord, get a life and let this die. Never once did I indicte anyone based on their correct use of sentence structure. If people slowed down to make sure their sentences were 100 percent correct it would take an hour to post. My qualm was the simple misspelling of two VERY common words. Get over it and move on instead of repeating the same jokes over and over again.

Until Jo installs a grammar sentence/spell check function mode I wouldn't be wishing schmoes to write alike when hitting send ;)

As long as we get the jist of each others expressions and thoughts I think thats good enough for me. :D

The only thing I HATE with a passion is when newbies talk like they are having their 3rd coffee drink while they are typing.

You mean when people type out "r" instead of "are" and "u" instead of "you"?? Haha I used to do that when I first registered but I try to spell out everything as much as I can. I don't agree with the whole spelling everything out like an essay though. I mean shit most people have jobs and have to deal with that shit when they are at work or in school and this is supposed to be a part of their "time off" and it'd be ridiculous to ask everyone to spell everything correctly and use correct sentences and everything else.

I don't look at my keyboard while typing, and have said "sequal" thinking my fingers had pounded the "e".

Does any other typists do this? I do alot -- mix my "m" and "n" - ":" for "l" -- I'd probably catch it if my eyes were better, but I usually only catch it if I'm rereading my post, which I don't often do.

Still though, I think imperfections make things better.
