Ok...just got back from the theater. Have a few questions (pardon me if I seem dumb!):

***SPOILER ALERT*****
1. Didn't David have lucid dreams at the beginning of the movie?? So this kinda messes with my head...he had that Times Square dream, is discussing it WITH THE PSYCHOLOGIST at the beginning of the movie. Now, doesn't the dream life begin after he awakens on the sidewalk later??? I'm confused.
2. Was that SOPHIA'S voice at the end saying "Relax David, open your eyes?" What the ****???

Maybe I haven't had time to process enough yet...but wanted some feedback from all of you brilliant, insightful viewers!

Yeah that was Sofia's voice at both the beginning and end of the film saying "Open Your Eyes"

And so...?? What can it mean?? ***SPOILER*** Did she freeze herself? If so, how was she awake when he decided to awaken?? If the beginning of the movie was his real life, wassup with the Times Square lucid dream and him talking to the shrink?? Was he remembering the Times Square dream within the frozen/lucid dream when he was talking it about it at the beginning?? (I am processing as I write, so forgive me!)

Seriously , I don't really know why......the movie was a mindtrip that needs to be viewed multiple times to get the entire gist of it. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

THIS IS YOUR SPOILER WARNING.
This message contains spoilers that might be potentially damaging to people who haven't seen the film. So if you don't want the whole deal blown, don't read any further. Capice? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

In chimes Brian... Along with the news that I have actually seen this film twice, and that certainly assists with total comprehension of Crowe's more subtle and or unexpected little deviations; I have also thought about it at some length, and am planning to give Vanilla Sky the same sort of treatment than Salon.com gave Memento and Mulholland Drive, because I honestly think a crib sheet might be useful for some people.

Aside -- It's times like this I wish I had the pull of someone like Andy Klein, writer of the afore-mentioned Salon piece on Memento. As of June 28, he said he'd seen that movie four times in the theaters and once on video tape. I'd kill for a tape or DVD of Vanilla Sky in preparing this thing, but I doubt I'll get one; I'm far too small-time. -- /Aside

At the moment, however, it's incomplete, so I'm just going to give REALLY brief answers to your questions, and save the rest for a few days when I get this demon-damned article completed and posted.

1) It's definitely Sofia's voice at the beginning of the film; the usage of the Spanish -- "Abre los ojos" -- before the English implies that much at the very least, never mind the fact that it actually sounds like Penélope Cruz. I don't think it's Sofia at the end, though; the voice didn't sound quite right. More American, like, although it didn't sound much like Cameron Diaz, either. Ergo, I have to say that I suspect those final words are delivered by a nurse or technician at LE's/Oasis' storage facility.

2) The splice between fantasy and reality begins before the film's timeline as presented to us begins. I'm as positive of this fact as Patricia Cornwell is that Walter Sickert was actually Jack the Ripper, although I'd like to think I can come up with more proof than she did.

I could go on for many, many paragraphs about why I'm positive, but I'm too damned tired to be able to pull that off coherently. Suffice to say that I think three or four different little things are important in understanding it: Rebecca Dearborn's Lucid Dreams ad (which incidentally I found to be hysterically realistic and believable, down to the jingle), Edmund Ventura's little speech in the bar, David's habit -- as revealed in Ventura's near-monologue in the elevator -- of allowing aspects of popular culture to shape his Dream.

I leave it to those of you reading this topic to chop these theories to bits for the next eight or nine hours, while I get some sleep and clear my head before defending my honor again. Heh heh heh.
