I`ve always been a huge fan of Hans Ruedi Giger - the man, because of who the Alien saga is what it is. I think neither Sigourney Weaver nor Ridley Scott have nearly as big part of making Alien such a classic, as maestro Giger has. His design in Alien is without a doubt the reason I love the movie as much as I do. The Alien planet, Alien spaceship and the creatures for me are definitely the highlight of the movie. Sure, Giger didn`t have a big part of designing the following movies, but those just basicly copied Giger`s design. It is totally disrespective how they cut him out of the following movies. They did call him back to design on Alien 3, but after finished, as a total insult to the artist, decided to go with their own designs instead. Alien Resurrection didn`t even have Giger in the credits mentioned as the author of the original Alien design.

If there ever was a horror artist then Giger would be it. Sure, his credit in horror movies is maybe not the most impressive (Alien, Poltergeist 2, Species, Species 2), but if to only look at his work, one should notice that this man is as horror as horror can be. http://www.giger.com/Posters/Images/Poster01big.jpg
Being obsessed by death and the surreal since his father brought him a real human skull, Giger designed ghost rides for his friends and started drawing horrific stuff. Til today the main themes of his artwork are still there - death and eroticism.

Giger has had in almost everything: art, movies and even music. By that I donīt mean that he has done any music, I mean that he has been involved in music, by designing numerous cd covers and the microphone for Korn.

I created this page as a tribute to the man and to talk about everything Giger. First of all I have found out that Giger has directed movies himself and that there have been numerous documentaries about the man, yet it seems that they don`t even seem to be available in VHS format. I know there is an interview with the man on the Alien director`s cut DVD as a part of the Alien Quadrilogy box set and separately and mainly because of that I`m gonna buy the Alien Director`s Cut two disc edition as soon as possible. I would like to know if there are other DVDs or stuff out there that have either audio or video material of Giger.

Nice tribute, you posted some beautiful pictures.
I'm a big fan of Giger myself, don't forget to check out his official website :

All his work is referenced there.

While I can't knock his art, since it is beautiful if you're open-minded. I don't exactly like the man, since he's a little on the morbid and disturbed side. Then again, aren't all artists?

I got one of the books containing his original artwork. I think my favorite painting he did is the one called "Satan's Bride II."

Quirky guy, but his work is flooring. I have some of Giger's art on my bedroom walls. I wish that he'd make more contributions to Hollywood, but they won't have him.

I think I may've mentioned this cat before.. for his influence on the Alien flicks alone, the guy deserves to be a fucking schmoe..

there's something very demonic about his stuff. Givesh me nightmares!

I always thought this (http://www.giger.com) was his official website. Also, it has a whole lot cooler design.

You think Giger is disturbing?

Ever seen the work of Joel Peter Witkin?

The guy is very much a genius. I would definetly not like to meet the man in person. I remember on the quadriliogy Scott said something along the lines of
"I asked him why he did opium and he said he was afraid of the stuff that is in his head".

I believe there are artists out there that are far more disturbing than Witkin, but I think that is actually not the point here. I think just grossing someone out is too easy to call it art, so I don`t judge Giger according to that. I also think there is more to Witkin`s art than that. My point at the moment was not to critizise Witkin, but to state that this thread is not about who is the most gross and disturbing artist.

Ooops, right.
I have both sites in my bookmarks, forgot to check which one was the real deal.
Indeed, the one I linked seems more like a personal homepage.
Thanks for the correction.

He is cool, I have this huge hard back coffee table book of his stuff. My favorite is this one Blondie Album cover he did. Debbie Harry is on the cover kinda grayish, with a lost look on her face and some sort of daggers are going through her face. I love that one, I have it hanging in my bedroom. I love pictures on my walls but they have to have a sort of look to them. I love going to www.moviemarket.com for pictures and posters. They are cool!

I think the reason being was that Giger wanted to be too involved in the franchise and Hollywood wanted no part of it. I think both are at fault. Giger for trying to claim the franchise as his creation alone, and the Industry for using Giger's masterful work then tossing him out like an old pair of socks.

Maybe he asked too much, but the franchise IS his alien. Not the protagonists. Not the scripts. The rest of the film could've been anything at all and it'd still only be memorable for his creature and its life cycle.

those are some great pictures and ive loved the korn microphone since i first saw it, very interesting that it was designed by the same guy that designed the aliens. hes a very talented guy and its a shame he isnt used more often, he could probably help create some very creepy movies

Your wrong! Just remember, you can't copyright ideas! Giger had the original Alien, but after its changes in the sequels it was lost. If I took your chocolate cookie dough, mixed it with my own oatmeal cookie dough, Is it your oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough or mine? This discussion can go on and on, so I'll just say-- Aliens Fucking Rock No Matter Who Own's The Rights To Them!!! :p

By the way, does someone here own the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set? I am probably just buying the Alien DVDs I want individually, because they are so cheap at the moment. I ordered the Alien (director`s cut) special edition half a week ago and it should arrive soon. Anyway, my point is, I want to know how much Giger is involved in the extras. I know there`s an interview with him on the Alien disc (and that is one of the main reasons I bought it), but are there any more extras featuring him on the discs and how are they? How about Alien 3? Also how are the interviews with him on the Alien disc?

There is a good chunk of time quadrilogy dedicated to mr Giger. There is alot of him on the Alien special features and then again on Alien 3. I can't remeber if he is on any of the other disks but those two I'm sure of.

The prices just went up again from Ģ8.99 to Ģ17.99 so I think I`m not going to buy them individually and next time will probably go for the Quadrilogy box set. So what if I already have the Alien disc - it seems like a kick-ass set. At the time I just had to get my hands on the first Alien as soon as possible and didn`t have the money for Quadrilogy.

I've always wished that there'd be a huge travelling exhibit of Geiger's work. Maybe there has been & I just never heard about it.

Also is it pronounced Gee-Ger or Guy-Ger?

I received The Alien DVD some time ago now and I gotta tell you, the Giger interviews really are great. The man is actually somewhat funny with his accent and talks about being afraid of snakes and whatnot.

I found out there is a Species (Special Edition) disc coming out or having recently come out and having some extras concearning Giger on it. Any info about them?

Its a series on Scream TV hosted by Clive Barker that goes deep into all kinds of horror, including true to life serial killers, and much more. Quite informative, like a series of bios for the things that terrify.

I'm not a big fan of the bio-mechanical look Giger goes for, but I still enjoy his work. For me it's the color. He has marvelous blends of green and gray, which represent his mix of machine (gray) and life (green). May be looking too much into it, but when I've seen Giger-like art in other colors I haven't liked it nearly so much as his neutral gray and green tones.

Yeah, exactly. He uses different shades of greys and greens most of all.

By the way, if anyone`s interested (I`ve spent many hours going through them), then here`s (http://www.fred-katrin.de/) a quite huge gallery of high-res Giger images.

i don't think Giger's work is too terribly morbid or disturbing...just seems very otherworldly.

one of my friends who was an art major at the university i attend once showed me a picture he drew of two zombies having sex while graphically eating each others entrails...

now THAT'S disturbing! ;)
