Not much of a surprise this week to see Will Smith's futuristic outing I, ROBOT take to the top spot, kicking KING ARTHUR off the thrown. The Alex Proyas directed action flick pocketed $4,646,737 (US $49,120,339, marking it as the 6th Highest Opening of the year. Clive Owen's brooding Arthur and Keira Knightley's kick ass Guinevere lost 55% of their audience, but still held on to #2 with a second week intake of $1,522,685, taking the historic figure to $5,901,492 (US $62,384,269). Michael Moore continues to bring in the bucks, this week his doco FAHRENHEIT 9/11 was up 50% on its second week of Advance Screenings. Going into its national release this week, it will already have $1,920,751 (US $20,304,127) to its name. Nicole Kidman slipped 47% in her second week as one of THE STEPFORD WIVES. It still pulled in a decent $1,115,909, and has so far managed $3,986,649 (US $42,142,594). SHREK 2, SPIDER-MAN 2, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN and MEAN GIRLS all suffered considerable drops this weekend, dipping either 51% or 55%. Mike Myers' voice work slipped 51% in his 6th week of release, but has nothing to fear as its chalked up $47,941,762 (US $506,789,094). The green ogre is now the 3rd Highest Grossing film of all time here, sitting just behind LOTR: ROTK and Titanic. Tobey Maguire's web ways and the kids of Hogwarts simultaneously dropped 55% in their 4th and 7th week of release. Their respective totals sit at $22,475,472 (US $237,586,680) and $32,437,413 (US $342,893,678). Lindsay Lohan's mean streak was off 51% in its 5th week of release, but has an impressive $8,117,824 (US $85,812,963) to call its own. Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore to slip in to the Top 10 with their LAWS OF ATTRACTION which chalked up $212,717 (US $2,248,616). GODSEND and THE PRINCE & ME lost a considerable amount of steam this week, both dropping 75%. The Robert DeNiro thriller, which hasn't had much luck down under, has scored $1,069,172 (US $11,302,144) after 3 weeks in release, whilst the Julia Stiles romance is fairing a little better with $2,270,968 (US $24,006,247). Spending a longer time in the Top 20 than I expected, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW spends its 9th week in release at #17, falling 58% over the weekend. All up the disaster pic has a cool $20,094,289 (US $212,415,357), enough to make it the 5th Highest Grossing film of 2004, and #56 on the All Time chart. Missing out on a place in the Top 20, unsurprisingly, was the long delayed, nill publicised and little released comedy MY BOSS'S DAUGHTER. The Ashton Kutcher/Tara Reid flick, which went from a November 2003 to March 2004 to May 2004 to last week release pattern was screened on only 5 screen across the country and managed $11,852 (US $125,286).
THIS WEEK (July 29th): Vin Diesel in the franchise he continued with; Michael Moore stirs the pot; and Chloe Maxwell takes an Aussie thrill ride.
