Just finished watching 9th Gate on tv. Man, what an awsome film! The only problem: What the hell, the ending was far too speedy for me please help...

***Spoilers***

ok, so, the last page was a forge, thats why it didnt work for the asshole who decided he was flame proof!

Who exactly was "Green Eyes"? That was obviously her in the last page holding the book by the castle right?

What happened to the two brothers in the spanish book shop and did they (and why) forge the page?

What happened to johnny when he went back into the castle? did he meet the devil? Or is it open ended (think what you like)?

i think its kinda open to interpretation, what i got from it was that "green eyes" was the devil or sent by the devil, as she is seen in the real final page and Depp's character was meant to be the one to collect all the pages and go into the castle and become immortal or meet the devil...i havent seen it in a while but thats what i felt was going on

Everything that happens in the movie is designed to lead Depp to the Ninth Gate . The girl is either a " guide " or the devil , whatever you want to take from it but , at the end , he does cross over so to speak . It's one of my favourite horror films of the past ten years but I seem to be in the minority .

The "girl" with the green eyes was Corso's guide to make sure he completed everything depicted in the photographs out of the three books.

The two brothers were "guides" so to speak as well. They forged the last image because the person who truly wanted to enter the 9th Gate would have to do it all himself and not hire someone else to do the hard work for them (Balkin). Then and only then, would they be able to enter the 9th Gate.

At the end of the movie Corso is entering the 9th Gate, where he'll meet the devil.

There are many interpretations of the movie. Some feel it's the above, others feel Corso is the devil who's lost on earth and needs help finding his way back to his realm while others feel that he's the anti-christ. Basically the movie is open to interpretation.

I've been meaning to get the dvd but have'nt got around to it yet . Does anyone else have it and , if so ,what does Polanski say on the subject during his commentary ?

Thats really cool. What a brilliant concept for a movie. I think I just picked up on something, you know how one of the pictures had a guy shooting an arrow down and it said like beweare of things from above or something and the he left and all that scafolding came down... are all of the pictures something you had to do before you could enter the 9th gate!? thats brilliant, and the reason the flame dude died was cos he didnt, but johnny did and he got to meet the devil. Awsome!!! What were the other prints? i cant rememer any, i wish i recorded it now. oh well, ill just have to buy the DVD :D

Same here, and I think on these boards I have seen many people who like this movie.
Amazing directing from Polanski, too, (the first scene of the movie is sooo fluid and beautiful).

That picture had a guy hanging from the castle with his left foot behind his back just like his book collector friend who was murdered. The picture with the two people playing checkers resembled Corso's "game" with that one lady who was trying to get the book back to summon the devil herself. The arrow from the angel above was the scene where all of that painting equipment came falling down. The picture with the guy on his knees with a man standing behind him about to club him to death was the scene where Corso killed the black fellow by beating him in the head with the shoe. The picture of the girl on the seven-headed beast pointing towards the castle signifies her showing Corso where the 9th Gate is, as she rides on the demonic creature. There's a picture of a man on a horse riding to the castle and this signifies Corso's final walk to the 9th Gate. The image with a man with a bag of gold with the grim reaper standing next to him signifies Corso's absolute obsession with money, to the point that he'd even put his life at risk to get it. Then the image with the door on the front and a door at the end with a maze in the middle signifies the complexity of what Corso has to do, and the different paths he can take, but there's only one path that can lead him to the 9th Gate.

If you notice, Corso is an evil man. He's preoccupied with money and he doesn't care who he hurts or kills to get it. This mixed with his intelligence and his motivation to continually persue these books make him the perfect candidate for opening the 9th Gate.

Balkin, on the other hand, also had what it took to open the 9th Gate; however, insead of doing it himself, he hired someone to do it, which didn't work out for him obviously.

Yeah it's a great movie, one of my favourites, went out and read the book "The Club Dumas" after seeing it. In the book there's a whole seperate plotline that was cut out of the film. I actually think the story is much better without the extra plotline because it really has nothing to do with the 9th gate stuff. So the movie is better than the book IMO.
