what movies do you consider to be daring?
meaning that the director must have big brass balls to have done it.
not only films but scenes or ENDINGS to any film
the reason why I ask is because I recently saw Before Sunset and thought that the ending is truly amazing but very daring due to the fact that people are going to say what the fuck! what is this, that's it? etc.
Also I watched 2001 again and that is truly daring, anything Kubrick usually is.

The HBO movie "Undefeated"'s ending with John Leguizamo. That one was pretty daring I guess. I was really left like "WTF!?"

I guess I'll be the first to say
The Passion Of The Christ
The Dreamers
Scarface98.9

The ending of Arlington Road
The Last Temptation of Christ (Scorsese had balls of steel to include some of the scenes he did)

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines
For a huge, big budget summer action flick to end the way it did was certainly daring. It was a real gamble to go with a gutsy denouement like that when the studio was shelling out the bucks they did to make it (though they certainly had their way in the editing room....those fucking prats...)

Realm of the Senses! :p
I was mentally traumatised for weeks aafter seeing that film. Director must have been an absolute nutcase to try and get away with that. HINT: you can happily live the rest of your life without ever seeing this film!!!

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd also have to say Ben-Hur.

To be honest, I would have to say that Peter Jackson is daring to take on such a huge project as LOTR. Even tho I wasnt a big big fan of the novels/films, i still give him credit for having the balls to do it.

Agreed. I give the guy a lot of credit for tackling such a huge project.

Just when I thought I had forgotten about this film, someone brings it up. :( I agree though, that last scene will forever disturb the fuck out of me.
Also...
2001: A Space Odyssey (or any Kubrick film)
LOTR
The Dreamers
EDIT: I can't believe I didn't mention Citizen Kane or Gone with the Wind!

Sorry Hannibal :p I feel your pain. See guys? Most. Disturbing. Film. EVER! And no I won't tell you how it ends, that would be pointless, it's the film as a package that's disturbing, the ending (or the climax if you like *throws up*) is just the last straw. *rocks back and forth in the corner of the room mumbling 'i am not a bad person, I am not a bad person, I am not a bad person'*
IF you guys HAVE to see this (and believe me, you don't), for heaven's sake, watch it alone. You will never be able to look whoever you saw it with in the eye again. :p

I'd have to say the most daring movies would be not just one but a collection like mostly all of David Cronenberg's movies are daring and so are David Lynch so those are the movies i consider to be daring.

Pretty Baby.
I seriously doubt anyone could make a movie like this, especially in the USA today, unless it would be an indie.

On that note, I'll also put down KIDS, Gummo, and Bully.
Larry Clark and Harmony Korine are putty gutsy to make these ones.

My intentions are usually to champion those films that need backup, or a bodyguard so to speak...but with this topic I'm going with a classic:
P S Y C H O
Hitchcock's audacious efforts (killing off the heroine halfway through, making the villain sympathetic and identifiable, etc.) were trend-setting and ultimately inspiring.
Many have criticized M. Night Shyamalan's recent attempts to make his mark as the director with the twist in his movies, but Hitch did it first...and better!

Psycho was devised as an elaborate practical joke so whether that qualifies as daring or not I don't know.
Michael Powell's Peeping Tom was truly daring & ended up costing him his career.
How about South Park : Bigger, Longer & Uncut!
That was a pretty daring movie especially seeing as it was designed to be seen by an audience.
Unlike Harmony Korine's films.
