After watching The Notebook, I was struck in awe at this highly cliched event. It happens in most war movies(See anytime a grenade is thrown), and several action movies, and I'm sick of seeing it.

*Cue Explosion*

Four guys suddenly fly up from their feet and wave their arms in the air as they slowly fold to their backs.

*Back to main character who is SHOCKED.*

This effect doesn't look real, and its getting quite ridiculous. It played itself out in the eighties, and today with all of the unnecessary CGI that is created, you would think that CGI could take an extra step and create flying soldiers that go in the air or fly back at a high speed more realistically.

We are the reality tv generation. We've seen COPS!, and that dreadful officer who had the stick of dynamite blow up in his face, and all of the "WORLD'S MOST SHOCKING (FILL IN BLANK) CAUGHT ON VIDEOTAPE!!!"

Take some notes, go clickity clack on your computer and create a more realistic and shocking image.

And while we're at it, how about movies stop ripping off that old Mountain Dew commercial where they dude takes a bungee dive and shouts that "JERRRRRRRR-AGHHHHHH!" cliched shout that is the exact same voice clip, not just an imitation. It gets used in movies as well redundantly, but the only one I can think of offhand was Howie Long in the film "Broken Arrow".

yeah, this really pisses me off, especially when an explosion happens above ground level and they still fly in the air instead of being thrown to the ground or they get far away from a house, it explodes and they still fly into the air, its tacky and can really ruin my enojoyment of a film

I totally agree with whats said Not to go off on another rant here but I also hate the cliche movie scream where someone gets thrown of a brige, cliff, helicopter,, etc, and all of a sudden you hear this scream its been played in many movies, it doesnt even sound like the persons voice.

I agree with the rant, and how it's always employed and the fakeness involved. It's why I always laugh at a gag in Bedazzled where Brendan Fraiser's running away from the coke house and it explodes, even though there was no reason for it to explode and seeing him confused about it

I'm sure the same "fake scream" was used in X-Men 2 when Pyro is "torching" the coppers. The scene where hes burning the two police officers while they're still in the car - I'm sure you can hear that fake scream playing, maybe for a little bit (like 5 seconds maybe) but I'm sure its that same scream.

I think the scream came from an old game, not sure what it was called but I think it was "Mission Impossible" (I might be wrong...actually I think I am wrong), and when your character would fall to his death that same fake scream would appear. Thats where I first heard it anyways. And yeah I agree, its quite annoying.

Is this the same scream that appears in Return Of The King when Legolas knocks that one guy off the back of the Oliphaunt?

Yes, it is. It's annoying as fun.

It's the "AwaaaUGH!" scream.

It's in so many movies it's not funny. I can't pinpoint particular moments now (of course) because now is the time for specifics, but a few weeks ago I could have told you a dozen movies that this scream is used in.

It's an old, overrused sound effect. Just like the standard 'kaBLOWowWOW' sound effect for explosions. Don't know what I'm talking about? Watch an episode of THE A-TEAM with a lot of explosions, and notice that almost all of them are the same. After that, you'll never NOT notice that same sound ever again.

Explosions resulting in actors jumping on trampolines
I thought the topic header was really funny. It makes me think of the episode of RENO 911 where there was a building on fire, and the cops had a trampoline under the second story where a guy was hanging on the ledge.
He jumped off the ledge and onto the trampoline... and ended up flying off the trampoline OVER a police car and across the street... HEAD FIRST!! HAHAAHAHAHA...

You guys call yourself movie lovers!

Time to go back to school.

The scream you are speaking of is called the Willhelm Scream.

And the reason you have heard it so much is because it is used in tons of movies. It has become sort of a tradition.

It was originally taken from a 1953 Western called "The Charge at Feather River" were a cowboy named Willhelm takes an arrow in the leg and utters that now famous scream.

http://socal.southwestmovies.com/TheChargeAtFeatherRiver/wilhelm01.jpg

Then Ben Burtt the sound designer for Star Wars used it in all three Star Wars movies, he came to call it his pet sound.

The rest is history, it has been used in almost all Lucas movies and then others jumped on the bandwagon and it has been used in tons of other movies.

So when you hear the Willhelm you will now be in on the joke, thanks to Professor CSM.

Class Dismissied.

One of the grunts in the TV spot for Without a Paddle was used for when an enemy got shot in Goldeneye, the video game for the N64. I thought it was hilarious, becuase the first time I heard it, on the spot I recognized it.

I also hear knife/bullet impact sounds from Counter-Strike in things. I would hazard a guess and say these sounds weren't actually created for either game, but were pulled from a public domain library.

I remember the green goblin screaming the old wilhelm in the burning aprtment building right as he turns around.
