This sort of does and sort of does not belong in the book section. But it is a genarally horror based subject.

I have watched such things as Creepshow, Creepshow 2, Terror Tract, and just today rented Tales From The Darkside but have not watched yet.

So my question. Does anyone know of any good horror anthology books? Maybe by King, maybe not? Just some scary stuff, legitimately scary or even entertaining as long as it's horror. Not like the 'Scary Stories' books kind of stuff though.

These books don't have to be long, in fact I prefer they not be, but if they must as long as it's quality; I'll look into it/them.

Every year, The Mammoth book of Horror comes out (I tihnk that's what it's called). It has the years best horror stories, as well as an exhaustive listing of prominent horror movies, books, stories, comics, and maybe music. . .

I had read some vampire anthology books, after some googling, I found these two that I recall :

Dracula Book of great vampires
Blood Thirst : 100 years of Vampire fiction

These two are pretty good if you like vampire stuff.

I love reading collections of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. Creepy stuff. I sense a bunch of movie treatments to some of his stuff in the near future. I know Mountains of Madness or whatever its called is coming.

I loved Stephen King's collections. Night Shift & Skeleton Crew are my favorites. You have to read The Mist & The Boogeyman. Read these & you will come across so many stories that movies were based on.

I'm anxious to see what some of the other suggestions are.

When I first saw the AVP preview, before the aliens and preds came out to play I thought it would be a Movie based on the Mountains of Madness. Mostly 'cause of the "Alien Ruin in Antarctica" thing. . .

Definitely check out Clive Barker's Books Of Blood. The quality of the stories range from well above average to breathtakingly inventive and very clever. Highly recommended.

Also highly recommended are any anthology collections of stores by Brian Lumley. He's a master of the form. A lot of his stories reflect his obsession with Lovecraft. Try to find the following.

Fruiting Bodies And Other Fungi
Dagon's Bell And Other Discords
The Second Wish And Other Exhalations

Every story is solid gold.

It goes without saying that you should check out all of Stephen King's short story collections.

Another master of the form is Ramsay Campbell. Check out the following.

Cold Print (especally recommended)
Scared Stiff
Strange Things And Stranger Places

Simon Clark has a collection of short stories called Salt Snake And Other Bloody Cuts and it's chock full of excellent spine chillers.

Also check out any collections by Ray Bradbury. Not all horror but his short stories are masterful.

Robert R McCammon has an excellent collection of short stories called Blue World. Amazing stuff.

Last but by no means least. Author Christopher Fowler puts out as many short story collections as he does novels and rarely will you read a short story of his that you'll be in any way disappointed in. Check out the following.

The Bureau Of Lost Souls
The Devil In Me
Sharper Knives
City Jitters
More City Jitters
Personal Demons

All fantastic.

Ok...one more.

Richard Matheson of I Am Legend fame has writter some fantastic short stories. I don't know if a collecton is available. If there is...check it out.

Thanks to all so far. This will serve as a nice anthology thread for anyone interested in the future now as well. I am suprised one didn't exist yet.

Psychocandy, I'm looking for that stuff right now.
drdash, looking for your suggestions as well.

Has anyone heard of these, and if so how are they?

Gathering the bones : original stories from the world's masters of horror,
100 Ghastly Little Ghost Stories,
and Best New Horror (Instert Number 1-5 Here).

Also, Psychocandy, I found some of Ramsey Campbell's Stuff, you spelled it Ramsay... just thought I'd clear that up.
Also, Clive Barker's Books of Blood comes in a set of all 3, should I just get that, or a particular one?

drdash, I found Silver Scream, Dark Forces, 999, and Hot Blood. Hot Blood didn't seem like my taste though. The others are on their way.

Ah...Ramsey. Oops. :D

As for Books Of Blood. Get the set. It's all good. I'll come back and recommend particular stories but I would suggest reading them cover to cover in order.

BTW...I didn't recommend Lovecraft's anthologies. There are three essential volumes.

Omnibus 1: At The Mountains Of Madness

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0586063226.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Omnibus 2: Dagon And Other Macabre Tales

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0586063242.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Omnibus 3: The Haunter Of The Dark

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0586063234.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Trust me...ALL ESSENTIAL.

Since I posted this in the late summer, I have bought: Skeleton Crew and Night Shift. I read 666: Stories Of Horror and Clive Barker's Books Of Blood.

Right now I am reading Night Shift and am on the 2nd story "Graveyard Shift". Loved "Jeruselem's Lot"... archaic and evil. What are everyone's thoughts on the ending of that one by the way?

I wanted to bump this up, A. For any Anthology fans out there that love the shorts that are so refreshing every 10-40 pages, and B. I must thank all of you for the help, and I do - Thank you very much, these are so much fun for me!

There is an annual collection of The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror but the books cost about $30 so I've never got one. Check the library for this shit.

Copied and pasted from an amazon list I made:

ROBERT BLOCHS PSYCHOS by Robert Bloch
An anthology edited by Bloch could never be bad; some of these tales are amazingly disturbing

PETER STRAUB'S GHOSTS
Chilling and eerie - a must read for anthology fans

Four Dark Nights by Bentley Little
Bentley Little, Douglas Clegg, Christopher Golden, Tom Piccirilli - need I say more?

Dark Masques by J. N. Williamson
So many short stories and authors it's almost heart attack inducing....

Masques, vol. 1, no. 2 by J. N. Williamson
Even more to salivate over; make sure both of these make their way into your home library

Night Shift (Signet) by Stephen King
A king treat that is legendary

Skeleton Crew by Stephen King
Creepy classics, excellent writing, old fashioned King at his best

Books of Blood: Volumes One to Three by Clive Barker
A sin to miss these, some of the best short stories around, each with different writing styles

The Nightmare Chronicles by Douglas Clegg
One of the best anthology collections - EVER - disturbing, eerie, original stuff here

SKIN OF THE SOUL by Tuttle
An older anthology for women horror fans; sadly out of print - get a used copy ASAP, you won't regret it

So long ago I made this thread.

And I still love anthologies. Right now Im on a Clive Barker spree though. Rereading the Books Of Blood actually... as apparently I didnt read the complete set before.

But this is good stuff, then Im off to The Hellbound Heart and some more Barker goodies.

"American Gothic Tales", edited by Joyce Carol Oates, has some gems.

Barker is great, you should love "The Hellbound Heart". I'm currently reading "The Damnation Game", and I must say, the man is an excellent writer.

The Damnation Game was excellent, likely my favorite by him. Joyce Carol Oates sounds so damn familiar but I can't place the name

Okay, so I don't know how "anthology" it is, but get a copy of Chuck Palahniuk's "Haunted." Some of it's sick, some of it's funny, some of it's scary. Worth the money and time.

Check out this book - it's an anthology of horror stories put together by Chris Woods of the British Horror Film website, and features a story by yours truly, and also by fellow Schmoe Corpse Candle (aka James Stanger).

Click on the cover for an article Arrow did on it, and links to more info. :)

I didn't have time to read through the whole thread but when I was a kid I remember being a little creeped out by this one anthology book. I think it was called Scary Stories to Read in the Dark. The one story about the girl who spends the night in the cemetery really spooked me. I don't remember it all but I'm sure it was all just kids stuff. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Thats the one I thought you were referring to. Those terrified me in elementary school! I havent read it since, but Im sure it'd still be alot of fun for a good 1-2 hour read (if I remember at all - big print, simple vocab., etc.).

I didnt eat Campbell's Beef Veggie soup for a good 6+ months after that Big Toe story. (for some reason it freaked me the hell out, AND I LOVED THAT SOUP!!)
