Bad link.
Bad choice, too, if it's verified. Ick.

LONDON (AFP) - Australian actor Eric Bana, star of films including "The Hulk" and "Troy", is the surprise new choice to take over as James Bond, a report said.
The beefy 35-year-old had beaten off competition from British actors such as Jude Law and Ewan McGregor to take over the role of the super-spy in the long-running series of films, the News of the World said.
Current Bond, Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, has stepped down after four films following a row with producers, the Sunday tabloid title said.
Bana was still negotiating with the series producers but they were hopeful he would take over for the 21st title in the series, due to begin filming later this year, the paper cited an unnamed "insider" as saying.
"Eric is the guy they want but he has a reputation for being demanding. They want to modernize Bond and turn him into a youthful, suave and modern hero to compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu (Reeves) in the Matrix," the source said.
Bana was formerly a popular comedian in Australia before grabbing attention in 2000 film "Chopper", in which he played a real-life character, a famous -- and famously violent -- Australian criminal, Mark "Chopper" Read.
He has subsequently appeared in a string of US blockbusters, most recently playing Hector in swords-and-sandals epic "Troy".
The James Bond films, based on the novels of Ian Fleming, have proved hugely successful ever since the first title, 1962's "Dr No", in which Sean Connery took the lead role.
I just read again and saw it said The News of the World... Gonna take it with a tiny grain of salt.
Anyway, Bana's not the best actor, but at least it's not orlando bloom.
I'll miss Brosnan though if he in fact doesn't come back for another movie.
But at least we'll have the memories...

" ... compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu (Reeves) in the Matrix,"
A sentence that neatly summarises the reasons why the Bond franchise is going to hell in a handcart.

Bana's not the best choice but he's certainly not the worst choice either. I like him so I'll be willing to give him a try. I think Hugh Jackman is a better choice but like I said I like Bana so I will wait and see.

Eric Bana's a solid actor and a real cool guy, but is he right for Bond? I'll reserve judgement until I see some clips of him in action.

Bana is too introspective an actor I think.
He can do brooding well enough but Bond also needs to have a playful side.
Also his Aussie accent is really thick & he never seems to shake it off whatever role he's playing.
You can imagine him saying "G'day, I'm Bond ... James Bond cobber".

You have a good point about the brooding part, but in Black Hawk Down he pulled off a pretty good American accent. How good he is at a British accent, I don't know.

All I can think is that at least its not orlando!
Bana- i think i'd need to see him actually do a bond movie. I've got a feeling he could pull it off, but whether he actually does or not...well, I guess we'll find out.
However, news of the world is not the greatest or most reliable news source so hold on to that pinch of salt a little longer.

Then this brings back the slight possibility of it being Orlando Bloom.
I hope all of that, including the "modernizing" was untrue then.

Orlando Bloom was never considered as Bond, the adult spy dude. There had been discussion of #21 beginning with James at school as a young man, and Bloom was heavily considered for that part should in materialize.
THAT rumor, like the Bana rumor, is unconfirmed... I just thought it was worth mentioning that Orlando was never really in the running, per se.
Bloom might have made and interesting "young Bond."

A broken clock tells the right time twice a day so by the law of averages EON are due a good decision like anointing Owen as Brosnan's successor.
Especially seeing as the clock in question has been broken since about half way through Tomorrow Never Dies.
A) This rumor (although I would have been slightly relieved, Bana's a great actor) has been proven untrue, I believe. See the Official Bond 21 Thread for details.
B) I'm trying to keep all talk about the next James Bond in either the Official Bond 21 Thread or the Who Should Be the Next James Bond Thread, this forum's getting a bit messy.
Thanks for understanding.
