TCM is showing movies of Barbara Stanwyck today. I taped The Two Mrs. Carrolls and watched The Strange Love of Martha Ivers for the first time today. I haven't seen Clash By Night, but I also have it taped, and at ten o'clock I'be taping The Lady Eve (can't believe I don't own or tape this one yet!). She's one of the 5 greatest actresses ever lived.

One of my top 3 actresses (along with Vivien Leigh and Myrna Loy). I haven’t seen a less than great performance from her yet - at her weakest she’s still engaging and at her best she’s absolutely electrifying. Just watching her in “Baby Face” (1933) it’s interesting to see she was a natural from the start, unlike many actresses at the time who had to be carefully groomed by the studios before reaching their full potential. And she never had a studio contract yet worked consistently under the studio system - not an easy thing to do and only goes to prove her qualities as an actress. Her two best performances (Ball of Fire and Double Indemnity) couldn’t be more different characters and yet she played them both to perfection. One of the Academy's biggest mistakes was not awarding Stanwyck a competetive Oscar.

Double Indemnity.

She was a real trouper acting right into her dotage. Even if it was in tosh like The Colbys.
