With all its positive reviews, hype, and rising 45% over the weekend I was expecting FAHRENHEIT 9/11 to top the charts, but it had to settle for #2, unable to beat Will Smith in I, ROBOT. The futuristic action thriller dipped 45%, but still managed an impressive $2,570,804 taking the films total to a healthy $8,427,408 (US $89,085,554). The Michael Moore doco did a decent first week intake of $1,643,953, and in addition to its two weeks of Advance Screenings, its raked in $3,788,263 (US $40,045,469). Vin Diesel's big budget Pitch Black sequel THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK managed to pull in a decent $1,618,677 (US $17,110,924) despite less than favourable reviews. KING ARTHUR and THE STEPFORD WIVES are still hanging in the Top 5, this week only losing 37% and 36% respectively. The Keira Knightley action epic has pulled in $7,341,663 (US $77,608,218), whilst the Nicole Kidman comedy is doing some good with $5,108,237 (US $53,998,824). Sequel extraodanaires SHREK 2 and SPIDER-MAN 2 are still performing strong with the Mike Myers animated comedy coming close up on #2 LOTR:ROTK on the All Time Charts with a 7 week total of $48,915,069 (US $517,077,855). 5 weeks in and Tobey Maguire has pulled in $23,344,956 (US $246,777,936). It's enough to make the film the 4th Highest Grossing of the year, and #35 on the All Time Charts, but I don't think it's going to make the $30,815,910 the original made. Thriller documentary TOUCHING THE VOID continues to hang around the Top 10, and after 6 weeks its managed $2,192,910 (US $23,181,101). Little publicised Aussie crime thriller UNDER THE RADAR debuted just outside the Top 10 with a debut at #12 making $94,087 (US $994,587). Hanging around the Top 20 longer than I would've predicted, TROY is still in play, this week, its 12th in release, sitting at #15. The Brad Pitt epic only dropped 28% and has racked up a solid $23,442,408 (US $247,808,095), sitting at #3 on the Highest Grossing films of 2004, and #33 on the All Time chart. Re-entering the 20 this week were two of the smallest releases, the Sarah Polley drama MY LIFE WITHOUT ME and the french documentary TO BE AND TO HAVE. The former, playing on 6 screens, has taken in $126,778 (US $1,340,161), whilst the latter, after 14 weeks, has rounded up $860,594 (US $9,097,280).
THIS WEEK (August 5th): Denzel burns up; The Wayans brothers pull a Michael Jackson; Life's a drag for Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette; and Meg Ryan packs her best punch.
