I really have seriously GOT to catch up with more Gene Tierney movies, I have only seen her in LAURA and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR. :(
Of the two, Laura gets my pick for her best role/performance, but I have my doubts that it might not be topped (or I could be wrong...).
She's breathtakingly beautiful, though.

That's a good description for me, too, although the two films I've seen her in were Laura and Leave Her To Heaven.
Not to suggest that I don't accept your modified definition of a Femme Fatale, Han, because I do, and I agree about her being one in Laura, but Ellen Bernet, from LHTH? That chick is a world class, run for the hills, oh my God what a bunch of trouble she is FEMME FATALE
She makes Jane Greer's Cathy looks like a Brownie Troop leader.

I've only seen her in Laura and The Razor's Edge and she's outshone in each by all of her other costars. So far, I'd say she's a mediocre actress with limited range (as said above) who's beautiful except for that overbite. ;)

"If he screws up that overbite, I'll kill him!" - Hawkeye Pierce.

I think you're a being too harsh on her. All of her costars? I'll take Cliffton Webb, but you can't tell me Vincent Price and Dana Andrews were more impressive than her in Laura. As for The Razor's Edge I'm willing to concede Anne Baxter, but Gene was mighty impressive herself in that movie. She does have rather limited range, as I admitted myself, but great range isn't really the measure of a great actor to me. It' all about how effective you are within that range - Bette Davis or Katharine Hepburn didn't have that much range either, but that doesn't mean they weren't some of the greatest actresses ever.
Oh and I like her overbite, it's so cute. :)
Buck, could you please explain the reference?

It's in a M*A*S*H episode. They're watching one of her films on movie night and whoever her leading man is starts kissing her rather energetically. And Hawkeye comes out with that line.
Been a while since I've seen it, I'm afraid.

Thanks, that's really funny. I used to watch MASH a lot, but that was like a million years ago, and back then I had no idea who Gene Tierney was, so that joke would've been lost on me even if I saw that particular episode.

Buck, I owe ya one. I just saw Leave Her to Heaven today for the first time (awesome movie, btw) and my lord I truly witnessed one of the most deadliest, troublesome femme fatales in movie history. I just got so turned on, yet at the same time I was frightened by her! It now is at the top of my list for the best Gene Tierney movie/performance. But a few more films could probably change my decsion, who knows? All I know is that I loved the movie, and was deeply fascinated by her characterization.

Thank Martin Scorsese. I caught A Personal Journey on TCM about a year ago and he devoted a few minutes to it (He called her character "A dollface with a black heart" or something similar :D ) and I got the chance to see it a few months later. Without him, I'd have never heard of it.
I've seen it a couple of times since then. I still just love the idea: a Technicolor noir
It's brilliant.

I was slightly worried about how it would look like in Technicolor before I saw it, being that it's a noir and all, and I much prefer noir in black in white. But it worked perfectly, I wouldn't have liked it any other way.

I came across "A Personal Journey..." in a bookstore yesterday and it actually has a picture from Leave Her to Heaven on the cover (as well as a two page spread inside - ironically in b&w) and wanted to read his comments on the movie - but it was only like 2-3 sentences. He just mentions the color thing and says Gene's character is an "angel face with the darkest of hearts" (I believe that's an exact quote). Did he say anything more about it in the TCM documentary?

That's about all he said. They then showed the clip with her in the rowboat and the kid swimming.
And I started looking for it in the listings the next day
