Alright numbers for Collateral but I'm thinking it will have good legs. It should be able to make it's 60 million dollar budget back.

Little Black Book bombed, yay.

The Village looks to cross 100 million by next week.

Meh, not very exciting numbers.

THE VILLAGE dropped 73% from last weekend. Ouch, baby, very ouch. I don't think it's gonna be considered a flop, but I bet people were expecting more out of it.

yeah. based on what happened last week, i wouldnt be surprised if bourne passed the village for the weekend.
and why does brittany murphy get starring roles? uptown girls bombed last year, and she has never carried a movie.

It should see a pretty nice increase for Saturday, since it's the second weekend. The 73% drop is kind of misleading because the movie had such a frontloaded opening day. It should stabilize for the weekend and see about a 65% drop, which is becoming normal these days....

The Village dropped more than 67% from last weekend, according to this weekend's estimates, and that number will increase when final numbers are announced tomorrow. I'd have to disagree and say that 50-55% drops are normal now, not 65% or more. That is a simply terrible drop. You can't sugar coat that. Overall, people did not like this movie, and for good reason.

Meanwhile, in limited release, Open Water grabbed $1,035,000 on 47 screens, making for a $22,021 PTA. Pretty damn good.

Collateral will get $90 million, and has a pretty good shot at $100 million. Unlike The Manchurian Candidate (which collided head-on with Village and had the same audience has this movie does), it has hardly any competition. The Village is dying very fast, Alien vs Predator has a completely different audience, and after that there won't be any big openers.

I was expecting a little more for Collateral, but with it's extremely positive word of mouth, it'll do just fine. I'm saddened for The Village's numbers. I wish more people would like it as I did. Little Black Book did poorly, but that comes as no surprise to me because I thought it looked terrible.

From moviecitynews:

Question Of The Day
Why Are People Positioning A $24 Million Opening For A Hard-R, Dark-Hearted, Adult Drama About A Hitman As "Middling" (Or Worse) When The Only Tom Cruise Movies To Open Better In The Last Decade Are Spielberg's Minority Report & The Mission: Impossible Films?

I think that is true. Remember what type of movie this is, and the rating. Not typical summer fare. One three Cruise movies opened better during the last decade. One is Cruise/Spielberg and PG-13. Two are PG-13 mainstream summer action fare. While Collateral's opening is not exceptional, it's certainly not bad. And the legs will tell the story.

Precisely my stance. On Box Office Mojo's forums, people were making a mountain out of a molehill with the movie opening with a TERRIBLE, HORRENDOUS, CAREER-MURDERING $24 million. I have trouble seeing any bad signs with legs, it had a nice Saturday increase (rare for this summer's action/thrillers), it has no competition, and it has great WOM.

Yeah my initial reaction was "underperforming" until I realized the R rating. That's what it'll do for a film. I also hope it has long legs.
