With Universal releasing season one of Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY on DVD, I thought the time was right to gauge everyone's feelings and reactions to this series and their opinions on how it compares to his other work of art - THE TWILIGHT ZONE.
Where the TZ dealt mainly with sci-fi natured stories, NG tends to lean more heavily to the supernatural. I've only seen a few of the episodes on the Sci-Fi Channel during the mid-nineties, and the pilot from the first disc of the DVD release, but I have found that I enjoy it immensely - so far. I am a huge fan of THE TWILIGHT ZONE and, as such, see much potential for entertainment with this DVD release.
So, what are everyone's reactions to the release? Could it have been better? What is your favorite episode? Did the DVD need more extras? Isn't it amazing that S. Spielberg got his start directing a segment of the original pilot episode? Did this series deserve only a portion of the attention that its older brother received?
More than anything, I wish that you could find decent fantasy/sci-fi/horror anthologies on television today.
Also, I find it a shame that Serling's life was cut so short. One can only speculate as to what he had in store for us had his life continued. If nothing else, all horror and sci-fi lovers seem to owe a debt of gratitude to Serling, and this DVD set is a great reminder of some of the origins of the stories and themes we hold so dear.
