Wow. It's been awhile. *Ahem.* For those of you who care, yes, I am alive and while, but these past few weeks have been hectic. So I'll probably only be in from time to time.
Anyway, this post isn't about me, it's about Television (the band, not the thing in your living room).
It has occured to me that there are currently no threads dedicated to this great band. Why? I know several of you music buffs must've heard of them somewhere.
Okay, I'll clue you in. In the late 70's, the rock scene was approached by rapid change. The glory days of Led Zeppelin were fading and new seeds were being planted for the next decade of music. And sure as hell, right smack-dab in the middle of it was a little gem of a band called Television.
It all started in 1973, when members Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, Billy Ficca, and Fred Smith formed the band and began playing in clubs. After a couple of years, they decided to record their first single.
The song was called "Little Johnny Jewel;" It ran for seven minutes and was placed over two sides of a 45 album. Surpsisingly, it garnered a lot of press, if for nothing better than just being unusual.
In 1977, the group got to recording their first album, one that would go down in history (albeit slightly obscure history). It's name...
Marquee Moon
"They are one band in a million; the songs are some of the greatest ever. The album is Marquee Moon." -Nick Kent, New Musical Express
The following year, the band released their second album, titled Adventure. While it is still considered by many to be a great album, it has never gotten the same respect as Marquee Moon., and it is often overshadowed by its predecessor. A year or so later, the band broke up to pursue solo careers; Tom and Richard fared fairly well in their exploits. After a 13 year hiatus, the band finally released a third, self-titled album.
