Well, well, well, what can I say about this...this...:groans:...film. It is a masterpiece of boredom and shitty acting, one to be viewed by all those who wish to lose approximately one half their brain cells and have to be committed to an asylum after viewing. Yes, it's that good... /ubb/rolleyes.gif

I watched the timing of the 'interesting events' in this film and it was quite simple because there were so few, but here goes the synopsis...

*SPOILERS*

0 - 96 mins. NOTHING WHATSOEVER OCCURS

97 - 102 mins. The FIRST real plot point, I tell ya, I cheered when it finally came...Here it is: Rose's father, Mr. Rose (yes her name is Rose Rose, /ubb/rolleyes.gif turns out to be the father of her child. One word...eeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!

103 mins. The 'exitement' (if that is what you wish to call it) ends

114 mins. SECOND real plot point (YAAAY!!!!)
Wally, Candy's boyfriend, is finally found after his plane crashed in the war, but it turns out he is paralyzed

120 mins. THIRD and FINAL plot point...Dr. Wilbur (a.k.a. Michael Caine) dies from sucking down too much ether

128 mins. The BEST part of all, the movie ENDS!!!!!!! YIPPPEEEEE!!!!!

*END SPOILERS*

To sum it up, I could have basically made this movie in approximately 45 minutes and spared the audience all that other time. Here's how I figure: The most enjoyable parts occurred from 97 mins. into the film all the way to 128 mins. Now, that's only 31 mins., correct. I, however, being the generous guy I am, will give you 14 extra mins. of film to introduce characters and the like, finally totalling off to a whopping 45 mins. of Cider, Bore the F*cking Pants off of Me, House Rules...thank you to the academy, my parents, and all those who agreed that the original sucked the big fat wad...

Now, as for the 'GOOD' parts of the move:

*SPOILERS*
1) The end of it
2) Learning that Rose killed her father before she ran away
3) Erykah Badu's acting debut was not bad, but she is far from carrying a movie on her own
4) Satisfactory Camera work
5) Every time Charlize 'I did the right guy to get into this movie' Theron, WASN'T on camera
6) The pretty cool scenary
*END SPOILERS*

Other than that, acting sucked, and Michael Caine kicks ass, but this was a wasted role on his part. The guy who played Wally wasn't bad and I'm sorry, but the pale, skinny arse my career is ending before it's even started Tobey Maguire BLEW. Satisfactory camera work and good scenary cannot make up for crap acting and no plot, so my rating is 2/10.

This is my opinion and I am open to any other's views. Input is appreciated.

I thought Cider House Rules was actually quite good. I thought Toby Maguire did great as a young man seeing the world for the first time. He's just got that perpetual look of wonder on his face and seems to project innocence. (Thus making him a great choice for Peter Parker IMHO)

Caine was also great. I thought the whole Rose thing was too diversionairy to the tale but it worked well enough for me. I wish they had left it alone and focused more on the relationship of Theron's character and Maguire's character.

Actually.. I thought The Cider House Rules was the best movie of last year. I think Gene Shalit said it best.. "Once in awhile, a film comes along, that makes going to the movies a joy." Funny, tragic, and entertaining, The Cider House Rules got be from start to finish.. The orphans, Michael Caine, the relationship between the characters.. Everything about The Cider House Rules caught the humanity in these people's lives so perfectly, so effortlessly... Even more so than American Beauty or Magnolia, my runners up for the Best Picture of 1999.

I give it an A.

Well said Homer!

How could anyone possibly not like this film? Or even worse - not like Charlize Theron?????????? She is so stinkin' hot!!!

Tobey Maquire is one of my favorite actors and I think the entire cast did a great job in this movie. Even to have Irving rewrite it for the screen was awesome!

But I have to give Heavy D the biggest props! J/K

I dunno, I guess I just don't see it. Michael Caine is an excellent actor and he did not have a whole lot of screen time in this film and I was very disappointed about that. For what time he did have however, he was good. Yes, Theron is very pretty, but that can only get you so far, she was not bad, but I found her boring. A cardboard cut out could've done the job. Tobey I simply found mundane and too methodical in all his actions. So basically he just bored me too. The black men who lived in the Cider House I enjoyed as well as most of Badu's performance, and her father was a disgusting ass in the film, but I did end up thinking he was a valid character and that his acting was certainly worthwhile, especially after what he did to himself after Rose ran away. I enjoyed it every time the nurse's were on screen as well as the children because they lightened the mood and cracked a joke here & there.

As for best movie of 1999, I would definitely go with 'American Beauty' no question. I have not seen 'Magnolia' and am eager to.

I appreciate the input guys, but I think that this is just a difference of opinion because I, again, just don't get it. /ubb/confused.gif

I really liked The Cider House Rules, and now after having seen all the major films of '99, I can give you my list of my favorite films of '99:
1. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
2. The Green Mile
3. Cider House Rules
4. American Beauty
5. Being John Malkovich
6. Stir of Echoes
7. Fight Club(will probably be higher after I see it again)
8. Sleepy Hollow
9. The Matrix
10. Mumford(Jason Lee makes this movie ten times better)

Honorable Mention: Happy, Texas, The Insider, Bowfinger, Cruel Intentions(strictly because of the soundtrack), Dogma(should have been on the 10, but I just love the other movies so much), Three Kings, Ravenous.

Also, what is the big deal with Magnolia? I watched it again and thought it was completely horrible that time around. Didn't care for it much at first, now it is on my worst of '99 list(not really, but close).

It's just you. I thought it was a brilliant film that showcased the fullest and brightest of human emotions.

wow dude sorry you didn;t like it. It was story, like a book. It took it's time and told a story about many things. Maybe you need for of an action film. Something to hold your interest, like violence, nudity, or cussing. It was a story. One many people including those crusty old cooks that choose the best films each year liked the story. I liked it. I like how Tobey finds himself and his true destiny.
