I didn't like the theatrical cut of Alien 3, but the Assembly Cut remedied most of what was wrong with it. However, it didn't remedy the fact that Newt and Hicks were still wasted, which brings me to this, an interesting article over at IGN that some of you may have already read by now (it's dated Feb. 2000), but is a fascinating read anyway.
What the Alien series could've been... (http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/035/035962p1.html)
Hicks was my favorite character that lived, so I would have loved to have seen this idea adapted for the third (and perhaps fourth) entry. I don't really like the telepathic ability introduced for the Aliens, but for the most part the story sounds great.
Oh, what could've been :p

Good find. That's the direction they should have went. I don't hate Alien 3, but I don't love it either. It's biggest problem is the killing of Newt and Hicks. We went through hell with these characters and to kill them off right away was a slap in the face to the fans. This could have been another great Alien movie, but instead we get an OK Alien movie.

Just another example of the time honoured tradition of FOX fucking fans over by trying to make what THEY think the fans want.

That's a really interesting idea. Though i doubt that could all have been done in one film.
I don't like the telepathy idea either or that relationship between Newt and the Marine, but hey who knows how it could have turned out.
However i really liked the idea of Newt and Hicks dying like that. Probably becuase it made me think that the events of Aliens were all pointless.
I'm strange like that though

That would have been pretty cool.I remember seeing Aliens 3 at the movies and it really pissed me off seeing Newt and Hicks knocked off.I would have liked to see them and it would have been cool to see a movie just based on those 2 while Ripley took the back seat.It would be badass to see the aliens take over the world. You cant go from Aliens where they had all those weapons to the third movie where they had flares, acid, and shanks. That also really pissed me off.

What I would've done if I were writing Alien 3, I would've just had Ripley's pod be evacuated, with the facehugger inside. And at the end, instead of just Bishop showing up, I would've had Newt and Hicks show up with him. I'm sure FOX could've afforded some kind of cameo that wasn't a prosthetic corpse.

Even though I like Alien 3 that concept was awesome. Perhaps budget also had something to do with those concepts not being made.

I have Aliens: Book One and it is fucking amazing! The aliens don't actually have telepathy, what the author did was to try to give an explination why Ripley and Newt have such horrifying dreams. Because both of them spent so much time near the Aliens they've developed a sensetivity to the Aliens signals/pheremones manifesting as nightmares. This phenomenon is what draws the cultists together on Earth and allows the infestation to spread so quickly. And later on in the series it's discovered that the Queen's secrete a "Royal Jelly" that is possibly the most potent drug in the Universe with a wide range of effects and side-effects.
Also, if Alien vs. Predator left a sour taste in your mouth, check out Dark Horse's Aliens vs. Predator tpb. It has nothing to do with the movie and is at least on par with the film Aliens. And because of the current movie it and most of DH's other Alien & Predator stuff is back in print.

I`m clearly in minority here, but I think I dig the Alien 3 plot they went with to be better.
Aliens is much loved, but I think it did to Alien what sequels often do - it watered it down. Yeah, it was fun, fast-paced and evolved the stories, but it was a sci-fi action adventure and not a sci-fi horror movie that the original was and Alien 3 in my eyes just tried to go back to the roots where the aliens actually were threatening and not something to be killed off with a couple of easy shots.
After seeing all of the Alien movies a number of times, the only one that really is good is the first one. It was dark, alien and actually truely scary. I really enjoyed the sequels, but c`mon, they`re not Alien. I think that Alien 3 reserved the dignity of the francise and kept it from becoming just an usual sci-fi romp with great visuals. I don`t know, it might be just me, but I believe Alien to be more similar to 2001: Space Odyssey or The Shining - movies that aren`t just some popcorn movies you make a bunch of sequels to and keep the audience happy until the movies are entertaining. The more I watch the original Alien, the more I see how much it isn`t just a francise movie, where you have the token funny guy and stuff like that. To me, Alien 3 was harsh reality kicking back in after a fun ride, but well, people just can`t accept it.

Alien 3 was an insult.
Alien Resurection was a half assed apology.
Both made the mistake of trying to go back rather than to go forward. The artical is completly on the money.
