KIDMAN BOOED AT 'CHILD LOVE' FILM
Actress Nicole Kidman was met by a chorus of boos at the premiere of her shocking new movie, "Birth," which sees her fall in love with a 10-year-old boy.
The redhead, 37, stars as Anna, who believes a young boy, played by Cameron Bright, is her reincarnated dead husband.
Many disgusted viewers walked out of the cinema at the Venice Film Festival Tuesday night after a shocking nude scene featuring Kidman and the boy sharing an erotic bath.
The movie's director Jonathan Glazer was disappointed by the reaction but is thrilled it is the front-runner for this year's prestigious Golden Lion prize.

just thought i post a review from Ain't it Cool...
I've just seen the next Nicole Kidman stuff tonight at an early press screening here in Paris. It's the least I can do to say that it puzzled me.
The story? At the same time that some guy named Sean dies while jogging, a baby boy is birthing... Ten years later as the widow is going to be remarried, she meets a young boy who tells her he's the reincarnation of Sean. Those of you waiting for supernatural stuff with posessed bodies and green vomit should pass. Audrey Rose it ain't. Or, maybe in some ways its a remake in reverse, when it's all about Kidman's self-convincing that her lost love is living again. So there's no head spinning here. Maybe because BIRTH is a tale about The Soul. A feeling floating all along a sort of melancholic mood. One of the assets of Jonathan Glazer's film is this very quiet, haunted mood. If I have to describe it, I just can say it's like some Kubrick film, but with a heart. (is it because of the kid, or the slow scenes, I felt like I was seeing a sad Christmas tale-ish version of The Shining, without the intense anguish). No cliffhanger, no violent or scary moments here. Birth manages to be very tender however still having some kind of menace growing around. But again it ain't a spooky movie. No Sixth sense twist here. Just this unusual and moving story about faith, mourn and weight of memories. The feeling of a tale having to do with the wonderful cast. Yes, Kidman is again wonderful as is Cameron Bright (beware Haley Joel Osment you've got a true great rival here), in particular the exceptional supporting cast (Peter Stormare, Arliss Howard, Ted Levine and Anne Heche as... the witch, anyway that's how I felt her part). Trouble is with the ending. Not saying it's bad. Far from it, but I would have liked it to be less cartesian. But if it was, the obvious point Glazer is making would have been missed. The overwhelming conclusion makes it all about betrayal and forgiveness. So I can't say if this ending is fair or deceitful... But maybe I just have to let Birth "grow old" in my head . For now, I can't swear this is a masterpiece (even if that's what I think of its first hour), anyway this is by far one of the best films I've seen this year so far, right there along side Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation...
I'm very intrigued, I'll be checking this film out if it ever comes around my city...

I'm surprised people are so incredibly stupid that they haven't caught on to todays technology and advanced camera trickery. I mean surely if they can make The Lord of the Rings trilogy into a believable film, they can shoot 2 people in a bathtub together without either of them having to actually be in the tub at the same time, or be completely nude. Considering the scene in its context, which it's obvious that none of these people who booed actually did, the controversiality of it should be rather minimal. I would rather think that the general idea of reincarnation would be the main reason behind peoples polemical thoughts on the film... not some short smoke and mirrors scene. I hope this ridiculous "controversy" makes the film a crap load of money.

No one cares how it was filmed. The fact remains that it was supposed to be a grown woman in the tub with a 10-yr old boy. People know movies aren't real. It's the idea behind the illusion in this case.

Why? The idea behind the illusion makes perfect sense in its context.

Well, i can't really comment on any of this since I have yet to see the movie, which I am curious to see. I wasn't too thrilled by the trailer (same with The Brown Bunny), but because of everything it's stirring up, I'll give it a shot (like The Brown Bunny)...

The original or the George Clooney remake? I was annoyed by the idea of a remake myself, though admittedly on matters of principle alone.

It's fantastic. Alot like 2001 in its pacing, soyou should check it out.

Seeing an erotic bath between a 30 something year old woman and a 10 year old boy would be enough to ruin the Godfather for me.
At first I was looking forward to this (was kind of expecting the relationship to be similar to the one in The Professional), but if this film tries to pass borderline child molestation off as erotic then I applaud the audience.

That would be the fair thing to do, wouldn't it? Perhaps I will. As I said, the idea of it being remade only bugged me because the original film is another one of my all-time favorites, so a remake seemed unnecessary to me. But the original was based on a novel to begin with, and of course more than one filmmaker is entitled to interpret a novel. I had the same hurdle to get over when I heard Spielberg wanted to do "War of the Worlds". Then I read the novel and realized that the George Pal version, although a great film, was certainly not a definitive adaptation.
Wait a minute...you were all talking about some flick where Nicole Kidman molests a four-year-old, weren't you? (Just kidding...)

Boy, that's brutal. First Dogville, now this. Why do people not respect Kidman's film choices? They're too negative!

I hate the fact that the audience booed Kidman, but at least they walked away rather than calling for a petition to ban the film from being released. If you don't like something on T.V, if you don't like something on screen or in a magazine, don't look at it.

So...what, they didn't like the movie because it passed their comfort zone?
Seeing a little boy cum on a railing in Happiness made me very uncomfortable but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the movie.

I saw this trailer at The Forgotten. So what's the big deal? DO they kiss and stuff? Or do they just take a bath?

A 10 year old and Nicole Kidman bathing together? I AM THERE.
But...strange the crowd didn't like it. Mi amigo de JoBlo gave it the 5/5 excitment level on the trailer. But then again, that's just a trailer.
