The story from the movie came from Tom Hanks acceptance speach for Philadelphia. He thanked a gay teacher for helping him study for the role or something along those lines.
It didnt out the guy like in In and Out but they took the idea and ran with it I guess. I think I read that on IMDB if I am not mistaken. Here is a link to an Amazon review that kind of explains it
