Does anyone know the deal on the Punisher sequel?
After Frank Castle's last outing, I may be the only one clamoring for this, but I can't help but wonder (especially after watching the DVD features)...
...if director Jonathan Heinsleigh is given a solid budget this time around (compared to the original's petty $30 million), he might make a good, gritty take on the Marvel antihero.

I can see The Punisher franchise going the way of Highlander.
In The Punisher 2 : The Punishing Frank Castle finds out he's actually been banished from the vigilante planet Merc & is in fact a very illegal alien.
Punisher 3 will be set before Punisher 1/2 & wisely pretend Punisher 2 never happened.
Punisher 2 will then get a Rene-grenade version removing all mumbo jumbo references to alien planets.
Finally in Punisher : End Wargame Thomas Jane teams up with Dolph Lundgren to finally determine who's vigilante king of the straight-to-video market.

Let's hope this doesn't happen, although I fear you may be right.
Artisan (now defunct) really screwed the chance of a successful Punisher film with the first...if Lions Gate had been in total control then perhaps they would have provided a respectable budget.
I liked The Punisher (2004).
And I think nr. 2 will be better since the first one was an intro movie (Still talking about 2004 version).
P.S I use the word "Better" instead of what I really meant, "Fun"

You're right about it being an intro film...
If they can transport the sequel to an urban environment and give Castle a nasty temper a la Creasy in Man on Fire, Punisher 2 will be decent.

I've read somewhere that Jane would like Punisher 2 to be called, "Punisher's War Journal".
Yeah, a "Man on Fire" attitude is desperately needed for the sequel. Hopefully Punisher 2 will go for a strong "R" rating, especially with Jigsaw being the rumored villian for the film.
Lundgren for Microchip! :p

I remember reading at Dark Horizons that the proposed Punisher sequels were not likely to be made because of bad box office for the first one. If they are to get made, it's likely to be a DTV deal, like the Darkman sequels, and probably with a different actor as Frank Castle.

If they make a full length sequel to it, they have to have a stronger villain than John Travolta's character, who went out like a pussy, and to not have a subplot be as bad as the "wife cheating" subplot. If he wants to make the villain's life hell, go another direction since for a guy called the Punisher, very little punishing actually went on

Intro movie as in didn't really become The Punisher until the end...
But yeah it should've been more gruesome

If it gets made, I am checking it out. I really liked the first one.

Thought the first was okay, 5/10, so I wouldn't mind for a sequel.

I think The Punisher deserves a sequel. I think they should give the movie more of a feel for the original comics. The first one is an origin story. Let's hope the sequel will raise the bar on the franchise.

I think you're right to an extent. Travolta is an amazing actor and played a fine villain in the Punisher, but I don't necessarily agree he should have been cast in the first place as Howard Saint.
The key to a good Punisher villain is casting someone the audience will hate from the opening frame. As well as he plays villains, I always find myself identifying with Travolta's characters more than I despise them.
Here's to hoping they cast a nasty, gritty villain in the sequel.

I think this film needs a sequel, as does catwoman and the hulk. they set the story up now all we need is action!

as does catwoman
That movie won't be getting a sequel any time soon..
it's worldwide total is: $64,675,563
and it cost 100m to make, plus ad costs.

What? I loved the opening theme.
I loved Carlo Siliotto's score.

I thought Punisher was one cool movie and some of the action scenes, especially the Russian fight, were awesome.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think all those movies should have a chance at a part 2.

Yes, I thought Kevin Nash totally rocked as the Russian.
Makes you wonder what he would have been liked as Sabertooth, as he was originally considered for the role back in '99.
