LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Alvin and the Chipmunks could soon be singing their famous tunes on the big screen in a live-action/computer-animated feature.
Fox has acquired the feature film rights to the helium-voiced characters from the estate of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., who created Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958. His son, Ross Bagdasarian Jr., and Janice Karman will produce.
A writer and director are being sought to bring the property to life onscreen. Similar to what the studio recently did with the summer release "Garfield: The Movie," the role of Dave Seville, the Chipmunks' adoptive father and musical coach, will be live-action, with the Chipmunks -- Alvin, Simon and Theodore -- to be computer-animated.
The Chipmunks gang are perhaps best known for their long-running Saturday morning cartoon show and such songs as "The Witch Doctor" and "The Chipmunk Song," and the album "The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles." The Chipmunk recordings have won multiple Grammys.
