'Massacre' Prequel is for the Whole Family
By Mike Szymanski
September 17, 2004

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (Zap2it.com) -- The prequel to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" will explore the family of Leatherface and how the creepy murderous family became serial killers, according to producer Brad Fuller.

While on the set of "The Amityville Horror" remake which is shooting about an hour's drive north of Chicago, Fuller tells Zap2it.com some of the secrets of the much-anticipated prequel to the "Massacre" story which is based loosely on serial killer Ed Gein.

"It won't have any of the young actors from the first (like Jessica Biehl), this is a prequel," Fuller smiles wickedly. "But there will be a group of teen and young adults in their 20s who make an unfortunate decision to end up in this town."

Fuller is part of Platinum Dunes -- with Andrew Form and action producer Michael Bay -- a company that re-made "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and terrified audiences last year, despite much skepticism from hardcore fans of the 1970s original. The horror remake opened at the top spot and brought in $81 million at the box office and $90 million in DVD sales.

Now, they're remaking "The Amityville Horror" which hasn't had such a cult following as "Massacre."

In creating the prequel to "Massacre," the team hopes to explain the story of the murderous family. "The old man had no legs, we hope to answer questions about that," Fuller explains. "We hope that you'd eventually be able to watch the two movies together and it will explain a lot of questions that were unanswered."

It's not clear if the actor playing Leatherface will reprise his role, "It's a very physical part," Fuller says. A lot of that will depend on how the actors negotiate, because they want to keep all their movie budgets below $20 million. Fuller does hope, however, to encourage actor Arly Ermy, the creepy sheriff, to come back.

"He elevated that movie in much the same way as Philip Baker Hall does with 'Amityville,' " says Fuller. "The Amityville Horror" stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George and is expected for release on April 15, 2005.

Yet you actually took the time to post a reply. Interesting.

Anyway, thanks the info. edonline. I enjoyed the TCM remake (surprisingly) and I think a remake of THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is a great idea because I find the first film to be so flawed. A prequel to TCM could prove to be entertaining, or could be quite awful. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I enjoyed the TCM remake as well. I felt it was the best TCM since the original, although I do go back and forth on that.
Ermy returning as the sheriff, would be a huge plus. Since I think his performance really helped the remake to be better than what it was expected to be.

It has possibilities... and remember, someone who's favorite movie is "Wizard of Oz", has no merrit when commenting on TCM, it's prequel, or any other horror movie. :D

In my view anyone who likes the TCM remake has no merit when commenting on any movie of any kind whatsoever :D

Even though the remake was better than I thought, this just sounds too damn stupid. A prequel to a remake? What's next? A sequel to a remake of a prequel of a sequel of a spinoff?

the remake was average, nothing special and unneeded IMO, also i dont want a prequel, i hate it when they try and explain why a killer in a film does what they do, it takes away part of the mystery about a character

agreed, pikul.

the remake sucked ass (IMO), however i may watch the prequel if they get Gunnar Hansen to do a cameo (not like that's actually been suggested, i would just like to see it).

btw Darko, what the fuck's wrong with liking The Wizard of Oz? that movie kicks major ass!!!

Its not like "The Wizard of Oz" is one of the greatest films ever made or anything...

And it was a hell of a lot scarier than TCM03 was, too.

Agreed, I loved the remake. I was not expecting it to be that good but it was great so since I had low expectatins, it was even better!

I am curious as to how Ryan Reynolds will do in the Amytiville remake. Also want to know how he will do in Blade 3. I thought he was great on the tv show 2 guys and a girl and Van Wilder was ok. Wonder how he will do in a horror role.
I also hope it turns out ok because I want them to remake Amytiville 2: The Possesion as well! My fav!!

I know why they became serial killers. Because they're crazy inbred bastards. What's to explain? I don't like the idea of an explanatory prequel, because 1) it's scarier when you don't understand their motives, and 2) the fact that it's not explained leaves room for interpretation, which makes it more engaging.

The Remake was just plain boring (christ, the trailer scared me more than the actual film), BUT, this doesnt sound half bad on paper. Ill give it a chance in the cinema should it hit the screen.
