Gilliam Swells Over Starting 'Tideland'

TORONTO (Zap2it.com) -- Terry Gilliam relaxes at a piano before speaking to the press at a hotel lobby where he is talking about his next movie, "Tideland."

The 64-year-old former Monty Python member says he's about to start filming the adaptation of a Southern gothic novel by Mitch Cullin. It will star Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Tilly, who are making the rounds giving interviews and attending parties during the Toronto International Film Festival.

"It's a very dark, beautiful, poetic and dangerous film, and the novel is very cinematic," says the director who expects to spend 10 weeks in Saskatchewan beginning Sept. 27. "I started reading it and I just couldn't put it down."

"Tideland" is about a little girl living on a Texas farm who dreams of a world of talking doll heads and other fantastic things. The girl is going to be played by 9-year-old Jodelle Ferland, a Vancouver native making her feature film debut. Janet McTeer and Brendan Fletcher also star in the movie.

Why Saskatchewan doubling for Texas? "We needed a place where stuff can wash on shore, and there's a bleak and perfect place for that there," Gilliam explains. "It's also much less expensive."

Meanwhile, Gillian has been relating well to his new starlet, talking about dolls and costumes. "The little girl in me is finally coming out," giggles Gillian.

I can't believe Terry Gilliam is filming a movie 2 hours away from where I live. It sounds very cool, and if I can get on as an extra, all the better!
