I recently came across a rumor regarding the Pacino/De Niro film "Heat". The scene in the cafe between De Niro and Pacino, one of the biggest in history where two of the greatest actors of all-time are together, might not have really happened.

Some say that due to the massive egos of both outstanding actors that both of the actors shot there lines separately and the backs of the actors are body-doubles. If you notice, there is never a scene where you see both of the actors' faces at the same time.

Director Michael Mann who also did "The Insider" with Pacino says that this is totally false. He believes that to better understand the emotions of each actor, he would show the whole face of one. He thought that showing half of each actors' face would not correctly portray emotions.

Hmmmm. Very interesting. I would not doubt this rumor at all.

Yeah I've heard this before, but I think it's a rumor. I mean, I don't have any reason to not believe what Michael Mann says about it. Anyway, I hope it's a rumor, because the two seemed to have great chemistry together.

I actually remember seeing a "production still" from the film in Empire film magazine, which showed them both sitting at the table in the cafe, from the side. So - It did happen.

Having heard this rumor while re-watching 'Heat' on DVD, I reviewed. There is one shot, when Pacino approaches De Niro on the side of the freeway. In a shot in that scene, they both appear in such a way that it'd have been very difficult to fake.

In the diner scene, you never do see their faces, but you can do a decent job of matching hair and body frames.

The rumor seems false to me.
