Worst Comedy Starring a SNL’er Since Corky Romano
By Bill the Butcher

Saturday Night Live continues to get worse, year by year. Since Will Ferrell left, there is no one left who can actually act, or who has any sense of comedy. The cast now, in between lines, looks over to read the cue cards—you can see their eyes move from the scene they’re supposed to be acting in, to look over to read the cue cards for their next line.

I think the cast needs to learn that not everyone is Will Ferrell, or Chevy Chase, or even Adam Sandler. While the latter two have gone off to big careers after SNL, both starring in some decent films—Chase in classics like Caddyshack, Vacaction, Fletch, etc., and Sandler, who showed he could actually act in Punch Drunk Love—Ferrell may not have had a huge acting break yet, that combines his dramatic and comedic talents, but his comedies Elf and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy are hilarious. While the plot of both is kind of dumb and a bit ridiculous, they work because of Ferrell’s talent as a comedian.

http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/twentieth_century_fox/taxi/jimmy_fallon/taxi.jpg

Jimmy Fallon, who used to do only the news on SNL, but now, unfortunately, does skits as well, has no talent as a comedian. Sure, he’s not bad on the news, not as good as his sidekick Tina Fey—who’s Mean Girls screenplay this year was an above average teeny bopper flick. But the man cannot act. I actually saw him once in a Blockbuster Video about 3 years ago, drunk off his ass; it must really suck to work at SNL, knowing you suck and the show sucks. Fallon surely proves with Taxi, a horrible concept from the beginning, that he surely cannot carry a film as a lead actor.

Taxi opens with a shot of New York City and Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” playing as a helmeted biker unbelievably rides a messenger bike through the streets and “subway cars” of the city. When the biker reaches the destination and is unmasked, we find out the biker is non-other than Queen Latifah. Right from the beginning, we know logic isn’t going to be a pertinent factor in this film, as the biker we saw riding through the streets was ten times thinner than Latifah.

Belle (Latifah) was the #1 biker and is now moving on to driving a taxi. When she gets her taxi, she supes it up to race car status. Belle’s first customer needs to get from the city to JFK airport in 15 minutes, so we get to see Belle and her suped up taxi in action.

While she drives this white guy—she normally doesn’t pick up white guys to try and balance out the universe—to JFK, you can really tell the taxi is up against a blue screen. She of course gets him there in time, in an unfunny sequence as she drives about 100 miles/hr and he flips and flops around the taxi.

Next we cut to Jimmy Fallon’s Washburn character, as he’s about to perform an undercover sting with his partner. They’re trying to bust some Cuban mafia like guys, for selling illegal phone cards. During this scene, Fallon does an awful Scarface impression, which is about the limit of his acting ability. When the Cubans find out their cops, Washburn’s partner gets shot and the bad guys scram.

Washburn jumps in his car trying to follow them, but throws it in reverse, instead of drive, thus crashing into a store. This of course is supposed to be funny, has never happened before in a film, and is completely plausible—accidentally hitting reverse instead of drive. Washburn’s bad driving continues throughout the film as an unfunny gag, just like most of the jokes in Taxi.

The plot from there just gets even more lame, as Washburn hears of a bank being robbed, and just happens to get into Belle’s taxi, after his boss takes his driver’s license away. From there, it’s like an insanely bad, bizarro world comedic version of Collateral—instead of a stone cold hit-man, it’s a dumb cop who gets in the cab.

http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/twentieth_century_fox/taxi/_group_photos/ana_cristina_de_oliveira3.jpg

Basically Washburn and Belle team up to take down a four women bank robbers, who happen to look like models. Taxi makes Set It Off look like Michael Mann’s Heat or Kubrick’s The Killing. Suffice to say, the plot is trash, the acting is bad, and the jokes are not funny.

Taxi is typical Hollywood garbage, adapted from a French film which spawned two sequels, all written by Luc Besson. Maybe the comedy played better as a French film, but the American version is just another failed remake with semi-big stars trying to make money. This has got to be the worst film starring a SNL’er since Corky Romano, the Chris Kattan debacle.

Remake proof:

“Queen Latifah, one of Hollywood's hottest rising stars following her Oscar nominated turn in Chicago, is in talks to star in Taxi, a remake of the 1998 French adventure-comedy.” http://film.guardian.co.uk/print/0%2C3858%2C4690610-3156%2C00.html

“Queen Latifah is getting behind the wheel for the American remake of Luc Besson's TAXI.”

I really have no faith in most SNL comedies anymore. *le sigh* Jimmy Fallon does have a fairly big fanbase though, and god knows Queen Latifah does. I wouldn't be suprised if it does relatively okay this weekend, but we're gonna see a huge drop next weekend.
They probably spent their budget on fast cars. And then when, "Oh, s***! We forgot about our leading man!"
However, I will point out that Will Ferrell is about to have his big break - just go to IMBd and check out how many upcoming films he's in. It's uncanny!

Will Ferrell is about to have his big break

I totally agree. I think his big break will be A Confederacy of Dunces (2005). If you've ever read the book (published by: http://www.groveatlantic.com/), I can totally see Ferrell as Ignatius J. Reilly, despite the fact that Ferrell's not fat. I don't know how they'll achieve the look, b/c one of Ignatius's main characteristics is his weight, but Ferrell definitely has the attitude and comedic tendancies to play him.

I think he'll be great in Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda (2004) ; there's a clip on line with him right now. But I think it's a small part. And CONFEDERACY will be his first big breakthrough lead, which mixes comedy and drama. Whereas Elf and Anchorman were lead roles, at the end of the day, they're kind of flaky comedies...yet funny as hell b/c of him.

I've already seen him in WINTER PASSING, and the movie is overall bland and fails. It's a more of a dramatic role for him, but the character doesn't do much for the film; the dark comedy their trying to play up doesn't work, it's not funny.
(My full review here: http://www.geocities.com/fidelio1st/film/winterpassing.html)

Anyhow, I think Ferrell is a real talent. I think he's the next Chevy Chase.

Jimmy Fallon on the other hand, while he may have a fanbase, is definitely not the next Adam Sandler. I really don't think he will break out. I think you are correct in that this film will do some big bucks opening weekend, but remember, that doesn't make it good.

It's always been my belief that many overestimate his comedic ability on SNL because Tina Tey carried his ass on the Weekend Update. He's always one of my least favorite cast members on some of the worst few years of SNL, and Queen Latifah's newfound fame is beyond me besides a decent role in Chicago and the consistently unfunny Bringing Down the House. Combine that with a movie featuring more suped up cars I hate and one of the unfunniest trailers I've ever seen and what you get is one assless seat on opening day

I agree. Elf made was a huge hit, and Farrel carried it alone. He is one of the big guys now.

Stick with the originals , they featured great acting ( Samy Naceri is terrific in the lead ) , awesome stuntwork ( no bluescreen here or wire fu , or at least it didn't look like it ) , wonderful chemistry between the two leads ( pretty much the whole cast ) , and the perfect balance between drama , comedy and action . And wait i forgot , their are two love stories at it's core , and they both work nicely .

Trust me on this one , all three Taxi films are unknown gems ( at least in the States ) , and i consider them must see status

Probably. But I've used Schindler's List many times in that context, and I just thought I'd switch it up. I think Saving Private Ryan still gets the point across. Don't it?

This line always bothered me in the TAXI trailer:
"I don't usually stop for white guys, my way of balancing the universe"

What the fuck does that mean? Like really...what does that mean?

If a white chick picking up a black guy would've said: "I don't usually stop for black guys, my way of balancing the universe", everybody would've freaked screaming racism at the top of their lungs. What BS!

I'm not a fan of racism in any form, am not a fan of Queen Latifah (still don't know why she gets acting gigs), am not a fan of men "hero leads" being potrayed as pussy-whipped pussies and I don't care for remakes.

So yes, I will go out of my way to not see this piece of shit.

FUCK THIS MOVIE!

I actually thought The Stepford Wives wasn't that bad at parts, but overall it stunk and desecrated a great film.
And god, I never thought Bette Midler could be any scarier until I saw her as a Stepford wife. I wanted to hit that... with a bat.

Just please , i have to say it one more time , do yourself a favor and check out the originals , they are goofy in a way only the French can pull off . I consider them somewhat of a spoof of the 80's buddy / action / police flicks , and somehow the damn things work .

I understand what you're saying. But the truth of the matter is, black cab drivers don't drive by white customers, while there have been cases where white and other ethnic groups drive by black customers and do not pick them up.

Looking at the exact statement you make, sure, you are right, it is in a sense reverse racism--Queen Latifah's statement in the movie. But the truth of the matter is, when looking at reality, white people don't have a problem getting cabs, while black people do (sometimes).

I'm obviously not defending TAXI or the screenwriters, because like I said in my review, the movie sucks. But I just hate when people are too oversensitive and/or do not look at the real issue.

I'll agree with everyone here...this movie looks very lame. I do, however, think Jimmy Fallon is somewhat amusing and I don't think SNL is horrible. It definitely is not as funny as it has been in the past, but there still are funny parts. But, in regards to TAXI...this movie will be terrible. If a trailer does not make one laugh at all, how will the movie deliver laughs? It won't. Don't waste your money. I'd rather use the money for asswipe than to see this movie.

Well I don't live in New York, don't drive a cab and don't live in the States and was therefore not aware of the true to life "social issue" behind the line. Where I'm from (Montreal, Canada) anybody can get a cab no problemo.

Having said that, this is not the first time that Miss Latifah (she's far from a Queen to me) pulls a racist slur in one of her films and call me overly-sensitive but I am beyond sick of it. Racism in all of its forms is wrong...yes...even when against white people! My prior statement still stands: FUCK THIS MOVIE! And as an added bonus: FUCK LATIFAH!

Two things to interject:
1) I think Ferrell is one of the most over-rated comedians of all time. He's extremely good with bits, but I still can't stand him in any movie... him onscreen is like if Saturday Night Live tried to extend one bit to fill the whole running time of the show- I just don't think it can be done well.

2) About the racism thing... seriously... this is like when the conversations about Lost in Translation were more about how people were trying to say the movie was racist than any actual commentary about the movie itself. (Being a fan of the culture myself, I have to make note that the movie isn't racist, and that it made me fall in love with the culture all over again.)

Anyway... if you're too bent on trying to claim that taxis are racist to want to follow in some good-natured ribbing about a stereotype, you need to back away from comedies altogether.

I'm guessing that even if the cab issue still does exist (which, from all the info I have to go on, they don't) it's more about percieved racism than actual racism. Sure, there are exceptions, but if a white guy misses a cab, it's because the driver is an asshole. If a minority person misses a cab, they suddenly have the option of percieving it as racism, even if the guy was just an asshole. Just find a carpool or bus if it concerns you that much- poor white people learn to do it all the time when cab drivers think they're too risky to pick up.

And since the current stereotype is that most cab drivers are immigrants, I have a hard time thinking that immigrants have somehow inherited U.S.-standard racism for some reason...

I agree with you on the "racism is wrong" bit, but, out of curiosity, are you by any chance a fan of Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, or Dave Chappelle? If you genuinely aren't, then pardon me for questioning, but it seems that a lot of people are so incensed by the apparent awfulness of this film that they're determined to convince themselves that it must be the worst film of all time--not just unfunny, but anti-whitey too! The fact is, a lot of great comedy (and I'm not talking about Taxi here) addresses racism in ways similar to the "balancing the universe" joke, though that is admittedly one of the worst and least funny examples in recent memory.
