On Oprah's Wednesday 'voting party' show featuring important celebrities like P. Diddy (Vote or Die!), Drew Barrymore and Christina Aguilera, svelte suffragette Cameron Diaz took to shock tactics to get the female vote out.

After a discussion with Oprah on lynching and the vote, Diaz spoke of the dire consequences for women if they sit out this election:

Ms. DIAZ: We have a voice now, and we're not using it, and women have so much to lose. I mean, we could lose the right to our bodies. We could lo--if you think that rape should be legal, then don't vote. But if you think that you have a right to your body, and you have a right to say what happens to you and fight off that danger of losing that, then you should vote, and those are the...

Ms. DIAZ: It's your voice. It's your voice, that's your right.

Anyways, I'm guessing, that maybe, Cameron was trying to somehow give her opinions on abortion? Maybe not, but that kind of makes sense... even though her saying that you shouldn't vote if you want rape legalized doesn't make sense, because wouldn't you want to vote for the other guy that didn't want to legalize "rape"?

Anyway, I do see the idea of Diaz's comment being a comment about abortion, except that really does not make sense. I say this because the ethical question behind rape and abortion are different. The ethical question behind rape is, "Is a woman as human as a man, or is she a subhuman object here simply for man's enjoyment?" I would hope you would all answer with the first option. The ethical question behind abortion is, "Is a fetus considered fully human?" This question must be answered because, if a fetus IS fully human, then abortion is an act of a human being taking the life of another, which is the simple definition of murder. If a fetus is NOT fully human, however, then abortion can be considered ethically sound (this is all, of course, IMO. The point here is to prove the irrationality of Diaz's statement - not to start a political debate!) Since these two issues raise two different ethical questions, it is illogical for Diaz to say that making abortion illegal is like saying that rape is okay.

There is one commonality in these ethical questions, however. They both ask if a type of person is considered fully human. Rape asks if a woman is fully human, and abortion asks if a fetus is fully human. So Diaz's statement could sort of, in a very loose way, make some small bit of sense if she was attempting to link these two issues together by the commonality in their ethical questions. If that was Ms. Diaz's intention, however, she failed miserably to get her point across.
