Hands down. Newman kicks ass in CHL, but the film stands on its own merits.

Cool hand luke (9/10) vs Shawshank Redemption (7//10)....


Im one of the few who found that SHAWSHANK was an overly sentimental, one dimensional, feel good prison film that was far to theatrical for its own good.

Not that I hate the film, it features some great performances, is well shot and has its moments of inspiration. Its was okay for one viewing but doesnt stand the test of time for me.

On the other hand COOL HAND LUKE ranks as arguably my all time fave prison film along with:

PAPPILON (9/10)
MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (9/10)
AMERICAN ME(8.5/10)
BRUBAKER (8/10)
KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN (8/10)
DAS EXPERIMENT (8/10)
GHOSTS OF THE CIVIL DEAD (8/10)

Thats just a few prison films off the top of my head that I rank above Shawshank.

I liked Papillon too. 7/10 for me though, I thought it was good, not great. Dustin Hoffman and McQueen were superb though.

If I really had to choose between Cool Hand Luke and Shawshank, I think I'd have to choose Shawshank. They're both really great movies, and I can't say I'm positive over which I like more. I haven't watched Papillion in a really long time, I should watch it again sometime.

Shawshank is one of my all-time favourite films. To me, it was more then just a prison flick. So, I'd have to pick it.



Though, Cool Hand Luke is the cooler film. Newman was as slick as ice. Very entertaining.
