NEW YORK — Though she doesn't really need to, Jessica Simpson is counting calories for her two latest projects. The singer introduced her new line of lickable fragrance products this week, and she's also become a workout fiend to prepare for her upcoming feature-film debut.
At the Rockefeller Center Sephora on Tuesday, Simpson said that she co-created Taste, the latest offshoot of her Dessert body-care line, to smell and taste like her favorite smells of childhood — especially the cake batter in the kitchen that signaled something tasty and decadent was on the way.
The newest scent, Delicious, is a combination of Tahitian vanilla, white chocolate, apricot, coconut and honey — it smells a bit more like food than fragrance. That's intentional, Simpson said, so that the product could be interactive. Sephora staffers made the point by shooting Taste's whipped body cream into people's hands, loading them with sprinkles, and encouraging them to taste away.
"It's low-calorie," Simpson said. "It's like having dessert without the calories, so if you're on a diet, it's a good thing to just kind of lick off every now and then. Luckily for Simpson, all the taste-testing she did with husband Nick Lachey to determine which flavors and fragrances work best didn't put a dent in her other project: preparing to squeeze into Daisy Duke's hot pants for the big-screen remake of "The Dukes of Hazzard" (see "Jessica Simpson Scores Daisy Duke Role"). Besides working on thickening her Southern accent with the aid of best friend Casey Cobb, Simpson said she's now spending two and a half hours a day to get her butt in gear.
"I'm trying to get my butt perky, and I'm trying to actually get a butt," she said. "I have a white-girl bootie, so I'm doing all my squats to lift it a little bit and get some junk in my trunk."
Meanwhile, Simpson has also recorded two duets with Lachey recently, one for the special-edition DVD of Disney's "Aladdin," which was released on Tuesday ("A Whole New World") and another for her forthcoming Christmas album, due November 23 ("Baby It's Cold Outside").
"We both love those songs so much," she said. "We're very excited about the Christmas song, because that's an old Dean Martin song. It's a classic, fun, flirtatious song to do together."
