I am happy with more nominations this year than I usually am, which will make for a really fun annual Oscar Party.
However, I am not pleased with Ethan Hawke, Renee' Zellweger (cute movie, but OSCAR???)and Marisa Tomei. I liked In the Bedroom alot, but don't know why it is an Oscar Movie...so that cancels out Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson and the film itself for me. A really great movie, again, but not for Oscar.
I am sorry Ewan McGregor was overlooked for his fantastic performance in Moulin Rouge.
I have yet to see some of the films, but will see them all asap.
I liked Lord of the Rings, but feel it is overhyped & don't pull for it.
I also am pleased that Memento was listed for screenplay - very fresh.
I wish Come What May was up for song (Moulin Rouge)
I will not be pulling for Will Smith - Hope Russell Crow or Sean Penn win that one.
Judi Dench will be hard to beat.
Harry Potter/stone is left out of make-up, as well as visual effects.
I also am pleased Shrek was not a Best Picture contendor, but pull for it in the animation realm.

I think that Lord of the Rings is getting way too much praise. It's really just overhyped, and though it was a good film, it ain't quite that great. Memento was terribly overlooked, but I was expecting that.
I'm surprised about some of the nods to Amelie, and I think terrible misjustice has happened, when Man Who Wasn't There got just a few nominations.
Ethan Hawke was a surprise, Ian McKellen not so much, I don't think Will Smith or Jon Voight, especially Voight have such deserved nominations.
I'm happy that they included Sean Penn, but In The Bedroom sort of caught me off guard, I didn't seriously think it would get a whole lot more than the acting nods, but 7...that's a lot. I think I should go see the film...

DTM, maybe you can help me out here because for the life of me, I cannot see what the Academy sees in Ethan Hawke's performance in Training Day. I thought it was good (more like average, really), but absolutely nothing more. I can think of a dozen or two supporting actor performances better that it. What did you like so much about it?
(Hey, I didn't know you saw Gosford Park and Life as a House.)
[This message has been edited by ColinM (edited 02-14-2002).]
LOTR got 13 noms... very good for such a great movie. the reason why it was hyped so much was because its a good movie. it deserves all the praise in the world.
bad... guy pearce got snubbed... wtf??

I want to see all the foreign and Indie films lose at the oscars so I can watch all the self-righteous artsy movie buffs bitch about it on AICN and other message boards.
I think LOTR deserved all its nominations. Unlike some people here (namely, everyone who thought it was overrated), I don't automatically hate a movie because it has a lot of hype and a big budget.
The Others should have been nominated for at least SOMETHING.
Black Hawk Down deserved a nomination for Best Picture.
Oh, and I don't think something as pathetic as an Indie movie deserves to be nominated for Best Picture, so I'm unhappy about the inclusion of Godsford Park.

I don't think Ethan Hawke gave the best supporting role of the year (That was by Viggo Mortensen) But, I just felt that he brought alot of power and emotion to the role and really made me belive what he was going through. I never in a million years thought he would get a nomination but when I heard Marcia Gay Harden say "Ethan Hawke... Training Day" I was really happy and felt that he deserved it. Oh, and yes I saw Gosford Park (6/10) and Life As A House (8/10) during the month vacation I took away from the board.

Kick ass, DTM. I still want to see those two movies. Damn my small-town environment!!! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
But I can think of so many supporting performances that were way better than Hawke. From what I've heard, Ving Rhames and Hayden Christensen deserve nominations but I have not seen either one. As you pointed out, Viggo Mortensen deserved it more. Steve Buscemi, Jude Law, Ed Harris, James Gandolfini, Joe Pantoliani, Ray Liotta all deserved it more IMHO.
Eh, this is just one of inevitable times I sincerely disagree with the Academy.
I'm one of those scary people that has gone to see Lord of the Rings 5x and plans to go again when the TT trailer is released. So for those still reading my lil post here:

After careful, consideration, I decided that I am rooting for:
BEST PICTURE: A Beautiful Mind
BEST DIRECTOR: David Lynch for Mulholland Drive
BEST ACTOR: Tom Wilkinson in In The Bedroom
BEST ACTRESS: Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Jennifer Connelly in A Beautiful Mind
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Christopher and Jonathan Nolan for
M E M E N T O
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Terry Zwigoff and Daniel Clowes for Ghost World
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: S H R E K
BEST ART DIRECTION: Moulin Rouge
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: The Man Who Wasn't There
BEST COSTUME DESIGN: Moulin Rouge
BEST SOUND: Black Hawk Down
BEST EDITING: M E M E N T O
BEST SOUND EDITING: Monsters, Inc.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: A.I.
BEST SONG: "Until" by Sting, from Kate & Leopold
BEST MAKEUP: Moulin Rouge
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Randy Newman for Monster's Inc.
Of my list of faves, I am especially rooting for all four acting hopefuls: Kidman demonstrated the best range not only in Moulin Rouge, but also in the excellent ghost story The Others; as my friend QUENTIN said, Tom Wilkinson is the "real" best actor of the year; Ben Kingsley's blazing, daring, career-altering performance in Sexy Beast was my personal favorite of 2001; and Jennifer Connelly, who held her own against the dynamic Russell Crowe, should have won in this category last year (she wasn't even nominated) for Requiem For A Dream.
Also, the visual FX in A.I., the cinematography from The Man Who Wasn't There, the Memento and Ghost World screenplays and the Randy Newman score from Monsters, Inc. are high on my "rooting value" list. Mr. Newman has been nominated for eleven Oscars in his category, but has never won!!!
