That's a fuckin' tragedy, man.

He was quite an inspirational spirit. Instead of being possitive about his handicap, he went the other way with it, which I find to be rather spectacular. I don't think I could've lived as possitive a life as him after such an ordeal.

RIP.

Very, very sad.

I don't think I have ever seen such inspirational courage displayed by someone in the face of tragedy.

Despite the paralysis, he was still making acting appearances and did a lot of directing. Not to mention all the campaigning he did for more spinal cord research.

He will be missed.

That he really was Superman all along.

What a shock! However, he really showed how life as a paralyzed man does not have to be a waste- he acted, directed and traveled around doing speaking engagements. He was a great inspiration.

I just read that he had a heart attack and feel into a coma. He was 52. That's all they are saying right now.

Do you worry that you're not liked

But how much can you fake

But ordinary's just not good enough today

Alone I'm thinking
Why is superman dead
Is it in my head
We'll just laugh instead
You worry about the weather and
Whether or not you should hate

Are you worried about your faith
Kneel down and obey
You're happy you're in love
You need someone to hate
An ordinary girl an ordinary waist
But ordinary's just not good enough today

He was Superman in the seventies, but when he fell off that horse in 1995 and was paralyzed, some people thought it was the beginning of the end. Determined to walk by his 50th birthday, Chris donated millions to spinal chord and stem cell research. When his 50th came and went, he was moving underwater in a swimming pool, and was slowly showing signs of project. Yesterday, something unexpected happened. Superman died. He was a man that most looked up to as a role model and as a person that was valued for his courage in the face ofa disability that for some ends their lives as they know it. Not for him. He will forever be an example of dignity and self respect. A man determined to restore the normality to his life, his generosity will not be forgotten, and long after he is buried, he will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary humans who ever lived.

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
I'm just out to find
The better part of me

I'm more than a bird I'm more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It's not easy to be me

Wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie
About a home I'll never see

It may sound absurd but don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed but won't you conceed
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me

Up, up and away, away from me
It's all right You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy or anything

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me

Some of my fondest childhood memories involving trips to the cinema are when I saw the first three Superman movies on the big screen. This is really sad. I've posted my thoughts on some of the other boards and I don't like to reply multiple times on different when the topic is someones passing, but this is a completly different.

I've been reading on all kinds of boards thru out the day and it's amazing and truly remarkable the impact that one man can make in the minds of a generation. When he said "I fight for Truth, Justice and the American way" we really believed it and no matter how old we got or how corny it sounded as we became jaded teenages and adults whenever you watched Superman:The Movie and heard him say those words you believe in them. After his accident he was convinced that he'd walk again and I know that down I believed and hoped that he would again.

Thank you Mr. Reeve, you made us believe that a man could fly and you taught us to believe in heroes. On screen you brought on of our greatest icon to life and then later on you proved to everyone that you were, and always will be the one true Superman.

Reeve in Superman has always been the standard for which I judge not only superheroes, but all heroes in movies. And yet, it was the man himself, that I admired most. What he struggled with and fought for solidifies just what kind of hero he was in real life. There will never be another actor who was so worthy of the name Superman.

He was slowly recovering ever so slightly before he passed. As for not giving to this, which I'll assume means film, community all I can say is what a crock. Compared to what he was giving to stem cell research and such, the film community is far less important.

It should also be known that he was working on a film project before he died.

Patrick Bateman
10-13-2004, 02:28 PM
The project is an animated film titled, "Yankee Irving".

Chris Reeve's contributions outside the film industry, by far outweigh anything he could have ever contributed inside the film industry.
And I cant see how anyone can fault him for that??

Like Krueger mentioned above, Reeve was indeed making dramatic progress with his condition before he unfortunately passed away. Although his improvments may seem small to some, they were really pretty incredible for someone in his condition. Considering that he was told after the accident, that there was little chance that he would even be able to breathe on his own.

He will forever be associated with Stem Cell research, even though he never got them. But his contributions to research in spinal cord injuries are simply enormous. Chris Reeve raised millions for the NIH (National Institutes of Health), for research in finding a cure. And although not all of the millions raised was his doing, a great portion of it can be traced back to Reeve.

Christopher Reeve is a symbol of hope, and courage for many, many people around the world. His never quit, never surrender attitude will be admired for many years the come. And no one can deny that he has indeed left his mark on the world.

Although Christopher Reeve brought Superman to life for a generation of film fans, he will be remembered for alot more than just that.

But really, that article is ridiculous. If you contract AIDS, are you going to be more determined for a cure than you were before? Of course, thats how the human condition works.

Actually, i think the funniest thing that ever came out of your mouth was your boyfriend's cock....but hey, who's counting?

Goddammit, I always stick up for the wrong people.
*snaps fingers*
But you didn't do anything wrong earlier shadow. That, on the other hand, has probably gotten you reported ten times over.

And briare, that's . . . well, the that wheelchair-in-the-pool thing. Yikes. But then people online are pretty privvy to bashing celebs. And sometimes it's tough to know who you can and who you can't (if, say . . . some disliked celebrity - jessica simpson, kelly osbourne - died we'd probably get a load of jokes and nobody would bat an eyelash . . . I mean I hope not, but I could see it happening here, sadly). I mean that link above briare's though, I don't know, since if you glance at the rest of his site you aren't supposed to take the author too seriously.
Though again, like briare said, there's nothing wrong with donating money to a good cause just because you were inflicted with it . . . a good cause is a good cause anyway you spin it.

Hey, i'm not one to go swinging digital fists around, but the guys passed. OK. It's not like any of these people crying over him are his best friends or long lost relatives...Most of these people know him as the guy who once played an icon (not the best) who had a tragedy happen to him a decade ago. But its the people who take it so seriously that just bother me, the people who more than likely have live journals and find things like howard stern and south park to be "unchristian" and evil. I just think that there are certain things that should be taken drop dead seriously and some things that you take a moment for a sympathetic sigh and go on with your lives. And i'm sure there will be those upright shmoes who are gonna say those people out there who make the funny little photoshop pics and wacky cartoons to be appalling and atrocious, but they should probably calm down before they break their glass houses.

It's just disrespectful!
jeez.

and by the way, i'm a huge south park fan, and used to listen to howard stern.
and i've never had a live journal.

I understand the disrespect that came with the joke...

...but take it with a grain of salt, it was meant to be humorous, not to piss on the guy's grave. Its just the people that get their panties in a bunch over things that they think should be "holy" and go sooo angry up because they think that defending it is the right thing...

in normal circumstances, kryptonite pillows are high-larius....and to hear it in this situation is something i like to call ironical. :D

I am sorry that you had to actually read what that asshole was actually saying.

Thread closed because...

1) Most respectful people who wanted to pay their online respects to Mr. Reeve and his family have done so...

2) Those taking this sad event to make goofy jokes have done so...

3) A new member has insulted another member directly (and been subsequently banned for it), which obviously we don't allow here: http://www.joblo.com/rules.htm
